Last year, I was speaking at a gathering of wealthy male investors. The organizers posted the1of a survey showing that only a small percentage of wealthy men believed their wives spent too much.
'What?'2one participant. 'Those guys have to be lying.'
There is no reliable3of who spends more among the rich: men or women. Both will say the other is the4spender.
A recent survey by Wilmington Trust, Campden Research and Relative Solutions proves the5. The companies polled 40 women (I know, that is more like a show of hands than 'survey'), each with a net worth of $25 million or more.
About half the respondents(受調(diào)查者) inherited(.繼承) their6, a quarter7it from their husbands and the other quarter earned it 8 . That is roughly in line with other surveys of9women and the source of their money. One interesting note: among the self-made women, 90% got their money from owning a business, rather than 10a salary.
As for 11 , almost all the women (90%) described their spending habits as 'below their means.' The report on the survey said that is 'possibly12they do not view their extreme wealth as defining their success.
'Women tend not to spend as much as13and splash(潑灑得使到處是) their names all over the place,' said one woman in the survey, describing her spending as conservative and he lifestyle as 'below the radar.'
Many women also worried about wealth having14effects on their children and didn't want to spend lavishly(揮霍) to 15a bad example.
At the same time, 70% of the women said they 'buy nice things when 16 .' And 93.5% of the women said they were responsible for making17on major purchases, which18that they do a lot of the big spending.
Of course, for truly major purchases a house in Aspen, Colo., a Gulfstream, a Feadship the couple probably makes the decision19.
But what about other20? Do you think men or women do most of the high-end spending?

Once in a blue moon there is one on New Year's Eve. Revelers ringing in 2010 will be treated to a so-called blue moon. According to popular definition, a blue moon is the second full moon in a month. But don't1it to be blue - the name has nothing to2the color of our closest celestial(天體) neighbor.
A full moon3on December 2. It will appear again on Thursday in time for the New Year's countdown.
"If you're in Times Square, you'11 see the4moon right above you. It's going to be that brilliant," said Jack Horkheimer, director emeritus of the Miami Space Transit Planetarium and host of a weekly astronomy TV show.
The New Year's Eve blue moon will be 5in the United States, Canada, Europe, South America and Africa. For partygoers in Australia and Asia, the full moon does not show up 6New Year's Day, making January a blue moon month for them.
However, the Eastern Hemisphere can celebrate with a partial lunar eclipse(月蝕) on New Year's Eve when7of the moon enters the Earth's shadow. The8will not be visible in the Americas.
A full moon occurs929.5 days, and most years have 12.10, an extra full moon in a month - a blue moon - occurs every 2.5 years. The11time there was a lunar double take was in May 2007. New Year's Eve blue moons are rarer, occurring every 19 years. The last time was in 1990; the next one won't12again until 2028.
Blue moons have no astronomical 13 , said Greg Laughlin, an astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
"`Blue moon' is just a14in the same sense as a `hunter's moon' or a `harvest moon,'" Laughlin said in an e-mail.
The popular definition of blue moon15after a writer for Sky & Telescope magazine in 1946 misunderstood the Maine Farmer's Calendar and marked a blue moon as the second full moon in a month. In fact, the calendar 16a blue moon as the third full moon in a season with four full moons, not the usual three.
Though Sky & Telescope corrected the17decades later, the definition caught on. For purists(語(yǔ)言純正癖者), however, this New Year's Eve full moon doesn't even qualify as a18moon. It's just the first full moon of the winter season.
In a tongue-in-cheek essay19on the magazine's Web site this week, senior contributing editor Kelly Beatty wrote: "If skies are clear when I'm20celebrating, I'11 take a peek(瞇著眼睛看) at that brilliant orb(天體) as it rises over the Boston skyline to see if it's an icy shade of blue. Or maybe I'11 just howl."

My Experience in a Free School
At first I couldn't believe it! There were no 1in rows; no bells rang; no one had to go to2 . Although we all lived “in”, 3made us go to bed at a certain time; there was no “l(fā)ights out”.
The 4thing was that practically all the students went to class, 5very few people stayed up late at night. Only the new people stayed up or 6lclass. The new ones always went wild 7, but this never lasted long. The 8took some getting used to. Our teachers treated us like9; never did we have to 10“stand up”,“sit down”,“speak out”. I don't 11one student who didn't try his best.
The subjects were the same as those in 12school, but what a difference in the approach(方式)! For example, in botany(植物學(xué)) we had 13classes in the spring or fall, but instead we 14[ZZ(Z)39two gardens, a vegetable garden and a flower garden. 15in winter we each studied a few 16lthings about what we had grown. In math the students built three different kinds of storerooms small ones 17,but usable. They did this instead of having lessons in the classroom. They really had a 18time too, designing everything, drawing the blueprints, 19the angles(角度) and so on. I didn't take 20.I can't stand it! Besides, I could do the basic things with numbers. That's 21!
22I think I am a 23person for having gone to the school. I can read and write as well as anyone else my age, and I can think better. That's probably a real big24 between the free school and regular school—the amount of 25.
