Culture shock isn’t a clinic term or medical condition. It’s simply a common way to describe the confusing and nervous feelings a person may have after leaving a familiar culture to live in a new and different culture. 51 That can be exciting, but it can also be overwhelming (不可抗拒).

Everyone feels the pressure to fit in at one time or another—whether they’ve lived in the area for days or years. 52  All of your experiences before you came to your new home are part of you, and what makes you special.

Here are a few tips for making sure your new culture doesn’t overpower the old.

Educate people about your culture. Just because you’re the one entering the new culture doesn’t mean you should be the one doing all the learning. Take the opportunity to teacher classmates and new friends about your culture; they may know little about it. 53 Invite them over for traditional dishes from your culture.

Find a support group. You probably left behind good friends and family when you moved, too. You can share experiences.

There are things you can do to keep your animal warm and safe.

If you must leave them outside for a long time, make sure they have a warm, solid shelter against the wind, thick bedding, and plenty of non-frozen water.

If left alone outside, dogs and cats can be very smart in their search for warm shelter. They can dig into snow banks or hide somewhere. Watch them closely when they are left outdoors, and provide them with shelter of good quality. Keep an eye on your pet’s water. Sometimes owners don’t realize that a water bowl has frozen and their pet can’t get anything to drink. Animals that don’t have clean and unfrozen water may drink dirty water outside, which may contain something unhealthy for them.

 Channel Islands        

     The two main islands. Jersey and Quernsey, are remarkable in that they present a combination of enjoyment and peace and quiet. Neither of the islands is very big(only ten miles long) and so all parts of these coasts are easily reached from the main centers—St. Heller and St. Peter Port. In both these towns and particularly in Jersry’s St.Heller are concentrated the amusements of really big resorts. The nearness of France gives a continental atmosphere; the weather is far better than in England. The other three islands, Jethou, Herm and Sark are small and quiet.

Isles of Scilly     

     The islands are really small and quiet; the weather is warm but windy. The islands are excellent for those who enjoy exploring small inlets（小灣）, creeks and bays on foot, or even better, in a boat.

Isle of Wight

The island is 24 miles across and therefore quiet large. The scenery is good and varied. The resorts are neither overlarge nor showy.(艷麗). The crowds seem content with entertaining but quieter holidays. The island has the best sunshine record in Britain.

   I got a guitar for my birthday, and since then I have been struggling. It’s kind of sad. To be honest, it is surprising how many problems are caused by such little things in the life of a teenage . It has awakened another side of myself within me. And it couldn’t have happened at a worse time.

      Think of London and you’re likely to think of the city’s famous bright red

double-deckers buses. Think of Thailand’s capital city, Bangkok, and the noisy

tuk-tuk ( 三輪摩托車) may come to mind. Picture the American city of San

Francisco and you might see the city’s trolleybuses.

   Imagining what these cities would look like without their red buses, tuk-tuks or

trolleybuses is difficult. They are symbols of these cities that make them different

from anywhere else in the world. However, these city symbols, which are so loved

by tourists, are not always so well loved by their city leaders. City leaders want what

is best for their city, which often means the most modern transport.

   In Thailand, Bangkok city authorities have forbidden new tuk-tuks because

they consider them noisy and polluting. However, the ban has largely been

unsuccessful, as it has not changed Thai people’s preference for the inexpensive

tuk-tuks over taxis.

  In London, the city’s first ever mayor got rid of the red double-decker buses,

which he thought were old-fashioned, by selling them to other countries. His plan worked,

but Londoners were upset to lose the charming old buses they believed represented the

best of their city. They made their upset felt, when the major came up for re-election last

year. Most Londoners voted for his competitor who promised to bring the bus back. Now

an improved version of the double--decker bus will hit London’s streets in 2012..

    As for San Francisco, several trolleybuses remain in use but mainly as tourist

attractions. They are too slow to be used for anything other than scenic trips.

    City transport symbols may have a place in their city people’s hearts, but it seems

they are increasingly out of step with the modern world. As Londoners have proved, their

continued life depends on people’s willingness to fight for their survival.
