Thomas Alva Edison was awarded more patents on inventions than any other American. When he died in 1931, Americans wondered how they could best show their respect for him. One suggestion was that the nation observe a minute or two of total blackout. All electric power would be shut off in homes, streets, and factories. Perhaps this suggested plan made Americans realize fully what Edison and his inventions mean to them. Electric power was too important to the country. Shutting it off for even a short time would have led to complete confusion. A blackout was impossible.
On the day of Edison's funeral, many people silently dimmed their lights. In this way they honored the man who had done more than anyone else to put the great force of electricity at his countrymen's fingertips.

Dogs have long been used to find explosives and drugs. Now,a new study shows that man’s best friend can also help to find lung and breast cancer, researchers report in integrative Cancer Therapies. The findings show that trained ordinary household dogs can detect early—stage lung and breast cancers by smelling the breath samples of patients.
Researchers have found that cancer cells send out molecules different from those of healthy ones, and that might be sensed by smell by the highly sensitive dog’s nose.
For the study, five dogs were trained by a professional instructor to respond differently to breath samples of healthy and cancer patients.“The dogs learned to sit or lie down in front of cancer patient samples and to ignore control samples through the method of food reward,” McCulloch explained.
After a period of training, researchers tested the animals’ability to distinguish cancer patients from controls. The animals were given breath samples from 55 patients with lung cancer,3 1 with breast cancer and 83 healthy controls who were not included in the original training period.
McCulloch’s group found that the dogs were able to correctly distinguish the breath samples of cancer patients from those of the control subjects in about 90 percent of the cases. The dogs were also able to detecting early-stage lung and breast cancers.
“These results show that there is hope for early detection,”McCulloch said. The re-searches are planning to conduct further studies on the breath composition of cancer patients to possibly design an electronic device that can do the dogs’job.“A dog’s nose is so powerful it can detect odors(氣味)10 000 to 100 000 times better than a human nose can.I hope people will be interested in doing this research,”McCulloch added,“It shows that there is definitely something out there.”

In 2004,the World Health Organization,WHO,warned of a possible outbreak of another serious disease which may be even more deadly than SARS.The WHO believes that it is likely that bird flu will spread to human beings in the next few years. If it does,up to seven millions people could die from the disease.
Diseases like bird flu are caused by viruses, that is,tiny things which change and be come more dangerous over time. When a new type of a common virus changes,it may be able to get past the body’S immune system. If that happens, humans are in great danger until a cure or treatment becomes available.
There have always been viruses and people always get sick,of course, but as we saw with SARS,the situation is more difficult today.People travel more than ever before, which means that disease can spread quickly and across large areas——in fact the whole world.
Scientists are already working on drugs that will prevent or limit the effect of a new virus, but the process takes time.It is just as important to make sure that countries, especially poor countries, are prepared to deal with the disease。New disease usually affect poor areas the most,so we must help develop health care in all countries.

The Chinese-born American architect Ieoh Ming Pei is one of the most creative architects of our times. He has incorporated both eastern and western ideas into his designs.
Ieoh Ming Pei was born in Guangzhou, China on April 26, 1917. His father was a famous banker. In 1935, at the age of 17, he came to the United States to study architecture at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1942, he entered the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
In 1964, Jacqueline Kennedy selected Pei to design the Kennedy library. After that he became well-known all of the world. People named it one of the Ten Best Buildings in the United States. In 1968, Pei started work on the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art, in Washington D.C.. Over one million people visited the building during its first 50 days in existence.
Following the East Wing project Pei's fame has continued to grow widely. In 1983, French President commissioned(委任) Pei to help make the Louvre more modern. Ten years later, the completion of Pei’s glass pyramid at the Louvre created a new historic landmark for Paris. Pei described it as, "the greatest challenge and greatest accomplishment of my career." At Fragrant Hill, a 300-room hotel in the Chinese capital, Pei has attempted to bring to his native China his often-quoted "third way of making buildings." Avoiding both a complete copying of traditional Chinese motifs(特色) as well as the modernism of the West, Pei has managed, at Fragrant Hill, to make one of his most eloquent(有說(shuō)服力的) statements.
Pei has designed nearly 50 projects in the United States and abroad. About half of these projects have won major awards. Pei has been awarded the highest honors from nations over the world. In 1990, Pei was awarded the Medal of Freedom by President George Bush for his contributions to world peace and service to the US government.

To Whom It May Concern:
On March 5, 2012 , I bought a Perfect Muffin Kit(松餅粉 ) from your store at Midfield Shopping Center. The cashier who assisted me was George. George was very friendly and told me that the Perfect Muffin Kit would live up to the guarantee on the box: “Perfect Muffins Every Time!”.
Unfortunately, this product did not live up to what it promised . The muffins I made were far from perfect . I followed the directions in the package very carefully . First , I removed the bag of mix from the box. Then , I poured it into a bowl. Next, I added the correct amount of water to the mix and stirred it. According to the directions, after stirring the mixture , I added half a cup of dried prapes, nuts , berries, or another favorite ingredient(配料 ) . My favorite ingredient happens to be hot sauce (沙司 ). I find that a bit of hot sauce makes pizza and soup taste very delicious. So, continuing to follow the directions, I added half a cup of hot sauce to the mix and stirred it. Finally, I poured the mix into muffin tins and baked it in the baker at 350 degrees for exactly 20 minutes.
When the muffins finished baking, I was very excited to eat the “Perfect Muffins” as promised on the box. You can imagine my disappointment when, upon tasting the muffins, I discovered that they were not perfect. These muffins were , in fact , absolutely terrible. Not even my dog was interested in eating these supposedly “perfect” muffins.
I would appreciate a full refund(退款 ) of $3.99 for this product as soon as possible. Enclosed are the receipt, the empty box, and one of the un-perfect muffins so that you can experience it for yourself . Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely ,
Michelle Bauer

Thinking is something you choose to do as a fish chooses to live in water. To be human is to think. But thinking may come naturally without your knowing how you do it. Thinking about thinking is the key to critical(批判性的)thinking. When you think critically, you take control of your thinking processes(過(guò)程). Otherwise, you might be controlled by the ideas of others. Indeed, critical thinking is at the heart of education.
The word "critical" here has a special meaning. It does not mean taking one view against another view, as when someone criticizes another person for doing something wrong. The nature of critical thinking is thinking beyond the easily seen—beyond the pictures on TV, the untrue reports in the newspapers, and the faulty reasoning (錯(cuò)誤的推理).
Critical thinking is an attitude as much as an activity. If you are curious about life and desire to dig deeper into it, you are a critical thinker; if you find pleasure in deep thinking about different ideas, characters, and facts, you are a critical thinker.
Activities of the mind and higher-order reasoning are processes of deep and careful consideration. They take time, and do not go hand in hand with the fast speed in today's world, fast foods, instant coffee, and self-developing film. If you are among the people who believe that speed is a measure of intelligence, you may learn something new from a story about Albert Einstein. The first time Banish Hoffman, a scientist, was to discuss his work with Albert Einstein, Hoffman was too nervous to speak. But Einstein immediately put Hoffman at ease by saying, "Please go slowly, I don't understand things quickly."

  1. 1.

Critical thinking is important to us because if we do not think critically,__________

    1. A.
it will be hard for us to think naturally and fast
    2. B.
we will follow the ideas of others naturally
    3. C.
we might be controlled by other people's ideas
    4. D.
we might be fooled by other people's ideas
  2. 2.

If you are a critical thinker, you will________

    1. A.
criticize other people for their mistakes
    2. B.
trust the reports in the newspapers
    3. C.
take one view against another view
    4. D.
      think deeply about different ideas
  3. 3.

In the last paragraph, "something new" suggests that________

    1. A.
the smarter you are, the faster you do things
    2. B.
intelligence is not decided by speed
    3. C.
      speed can improve intelligence
    4. D.
the faster you do things, the smarter you become

    1. A.
