My cousin Li Hong and I went on trip to my uncle’s last Sunday. We were riding along a hillside then suddenly some big stones were rolled down and knocked down our bikes.Li Hong’s legs got serious hurt and so was mine.We couldn’t move a bit.Fortunately,I saw some farmers ahead.Waving our hand,we cried for help like crazy. On hearing us,they ran to the spot as fast as they could. Thanks to their help,we were all sent to a nearby hospital and received the treatment on time.Although we do not know about their names,we feel they like our dear big brothers and sisters.

A.What is earthquake?

B.The damage of earthquakes

C.How do earthquakes cause damage?

D.Where do earthquakes happen?

E.The prediction of earthquakes

F.Some misunderstanding about earthquake

61.______________

Earthquake is a kind of terrible natural disaster. An earthquake happens when rocks break and slip along a fault (斷層) in the earth.Energy is given out of during an earthquake in several forms, including as movement along the fault,as heat, and as seismic waves that spread out from the  “source” in all directions and cause the ground to shake, sometimes hundreds of kilometers away.

62. ______________

Most earthquake damage is caused by ground shaking. In general, large earthquakes produce ground motions with large amplitudes (振幅).Large earthquakes also produce strong shaking over much larger areas than do smaller earthquakes. The strongest earthquakes that happen can result in ground crack, causing damage to bridges, dams, roads, railroad tracks, and the foundations of buildings.Another major cause of damage is the fires that burn the buildings when power lines fall and gas lines crack. In addition, undersea earthquakes can cause great damage to seashore.

63. ______________

A common misunderstanding is that of a hole in the ground that opens during an earthquake. This has nothing to  do  with  reality  but is  Hollywood’s  films  of earthquakes. After a strong earthquake, some cracks may be seen on the ground. These are not faults, nor are the cracks ready to close up again.Theses cracks are probably due to soil settlement  (沉降)  caused by the ground shaking.

64. ______________

Earthquakes happen all over the world.However,90% of the world’s earthquakes happen along these plate boundaries  (邊界).The  “Ring of Fire”  circling the Pacific Ocean, and including Canada’s west coast,is one of the most active areas in the world.

65. ______________

With the present state of scientific knowledge,it is not possible to predict (預(yù)測(cè)) earthquakes and certainly not possible to predict their exact time and location. They are greatly different from one place to another, according to many factors which are poorly understood. However,a great deal of research is being done to develop correct prediction methods.

Everybody is afraid of something. That’s what more than 1,700 kids told us when we asked them about fears and scary stuff. We gave kids a list of 14 scary things and asked which one frightened them most. Here are the top 5 answers from our survey (調(diào)查):① Scary movies and TV shows;②Scary dreams;③Thunderstorms,hurricanes(颶風(fēng));and other horrible weather;④War and terrorism (恐怖行動(dòng));⑤Sounds heard at night.

But not everyone is afraid of the same thing. And what makes one person scared can be of no big deal for someone else.Plenty of kids said their biggest fear wasn’t on our list.

What is fear?

Fear is a feeling that eyeryone has—it’s programmed into all of us—and that’s a good thing because fear is there to protect us.We’re born with a sense of fear so we can react to something that could be dangerous. The baby cries, and their mom comes over to comfort him or her, helping the baby feel safe and OK again.

Real vs.Pretend

The best way to get over a fear is to get more information about it.As kids get older, they understand more and start seeing the difference between what is real and unreal. So when William’s imagination leads him to think of witches,he can tell himself,“Wait a minute. They’re only pretend things.I don’t need to worry about them.”

The same goes for the dark.A kid’s imagination can start playing tricks when the lights go out. What’s under my bed?Is that a thief I hear? With the help of a parent, kids can get more comfortable in the dark.Using a nightlight or shining a flashlight under the bed to see that there’s nothing there can help kids fight that fear.

58.What did the writer find out from the survey?

A.Some people have never experienced fear.

B.Kids don’t like watching scary movies.

C.All people are afraid of something.

D.People often cry loudly when they are scared.

59.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A.The list of fears is not complete.

B.The things people fear are of no big deal.

C.Kids have more fears than people think.

D.People are afraid of different things.

60.In the writer’s opinion,________.

A.having a sense of fear is not a bad thing

B.babies have a weak sense of fear

C.fear is not something that we are born with

D.not all people can react to dangerous things
