“The brightest light in the darkest night”

The movie Babel is hot on screen now. The title of the movie refers to the story in the Bible(圣經(jīng))where people tried to build a tower to reach Heaven. Angry God prevented them by confusing their languages so that they could no longer understand one another.

The movie tells a number of intersecting(相交)stories about the world we live in and the problems we suffer due to our inability to communicate.

The first story talks about a married couple Brad and Cate visiting Morocco. One day they′re traveling by bus through a rocky area when a gunshot wounds the wife. The husband flies into hysterics trying to save her life. However, since he′s in a foreign country, he suffers from his inability to communicate with the locals.

Then, there′s the story of the shooters, Yussef and his brother, who are given a gun by their father to help guard the sheep. They are fooling around with the gun and fire a shot on a passing bus. At first, they refuse to tell anybody what happened for fear of the trouble but when the police come knocking, they are forced to come out with the truth with tragic results.

The next story follows the children of Brad and Cate. They are living back in California under the care of the family nanny, Amelia. The shooting delays the return of their parents but Amelia was eager to attend her son′s wedding in Mexico. At last she is forced to bring the children over the border(邊境)along with her nephew Santiago. When traveling back over the border later that evening, they are stopped and questioned by the border police. After a couple of miscommunications, they are asked for some identification(身份)at which point Santiago tries to escape and leave Amelia and the children in the middle of the desert.

The final story deals with a Japanese family Chieko and her father Yasujiro, who sold the gun to the father of the two young boys. Chieko is a deaf mute(啞巴)who has a whole other set of communication problems. And because her inability to communicate makes her“different”, she isn′t afraid to give a little attitude to anyone who she thinks deserves it. How does her father fit into all of this?

Open a large handkerchief out and show both sides of it to your friends. Point out that there is nothing in it; then show them both sides of your hands, which are also empty. Now ask a member of your audience to give you a match. Ask him to put a mark on it with a pen or a pencil. Fold up the handkerchief with the match in it, and let everyone present see you do this.

Give the handkerchief to anyone in the audience and say:“Here′s the match. Can you feel it? Good! Now I want you to break it into two pieces.”When he or she has broken the match, you say “Would anyone like to feel the broken match in this handkerchief?”several people will probably want to feel it. When they have satisfied themselves that the match really is broken, you say,“Now I′m going to make the match whole again.”Perhaps your friends will say that  is impossible.

Hold the handkerchief in one hand and pass your hand or your wand(magic stick)over it, saying:“Abracadabra, abracadabra.”O(jiān)pen the handkerchief and let the match fall on to the table or floor, saying“Presto”as it does so. This must be pushed well along the hem so that it cannot fall out or be seen. Some houses are designed to be smart. Others have smart designs. An example of the second type of house won an Award of Excellence from the American Institutes of Architects.

2,4,6

Located on the shore of Sullivan′s Island off the coast of South Carolina, the award-winning cube-shaped beach house was built to replace one smashed to pieces by Hurricane Hugo 10 years ago. In September 1989, Hugo struck South Carolina, killing 18 people and damaging or destroying 36,000 homes in the state.

Before Hugo, many new houses built along South Carolina′s shoreline were poorly constructed, and enforcement(強制執(zhí)行)of building laws wasn′t strict, according to architect Ray Huff, who created the cleverly-designed beach house. In Huff′s opinion, all new shoreline houses should meet stricter, better-enforced building laws. The new beach house on Sullivan′s Island should be able to stand a Gategory(級)3 hurricane with the strongest winds of 179 to 209 kilometers per hour.

At first sight, the house on Sullivan′s Island looks anything but hurricane-proof(防風(fēng)).Its redwood shell makes it look like“a large party lantern”at night. But looks can be cheating. The house′s wooden frame is extra strengthened with long steel bars. To further protect the house from hurricane damage, Huff raised it 2.7 meters off the ground on a wooden structure set deep in the sand. The structure might appear unsafe, but it is strong enough to support the weight of the house. It can also lift the house above storm waves. The structure allows the waves to run under the house instead of running into it.“These waves come ashore at tremendous speeds and cause most of the damage done to beach-front buildings,”said Huff.

Huff designed the wooden structure to be partially hidden under the house′s ground-to-roof shell(外殼).“The shell covers the structure so that the house doesn′t look like it′s standing with its pant legs pulled up,”said Huff.“In the event of a storm, the shell should break apart and let the waves rush under the house,”the architect explained.

A.it is strengthened by steel bars               B.it is made of redwood

C.it is in the shape of a shell                     D.it is built with wood and concrete

3.Huff raised the house 2.7 meters off the ground in a wooden structure in order to      .

A.stand strong winds of about 200 km/hr  B.build a strong structure deep in the sand

C.break huge waves into smaller ones       D.prevent water from rushing into the house

4.The main function of the shell is       .

A.to strengthen the structure of the house

B.to give the house a better look

C.to protect the wooden frame of the house

D.to slow down the speed of the strong waves

5.It can be inferred from the passage that the shell should be      .
