Works of Art

Kenji’s sister Ann was at the kitchen table. The table was covered with newspapers. Small bowls of paint were spread across the newspapers. Painted fans were drying on the chairs beside Ann. “What are you doing?” Kenji asked. Ann held up a plain white fan that she had just started to work on. In one corner was a small and beautiful pink flower. “I’m painting fans to sell at the fair on Saturday,” she said. Then she shrugged(聳肩). “But I’m sure no one will buy them.”

Kenji picked up one of the finished fans. He smiled. “I think you’re wrong,” he said. “This is beautiful!” “I agree!” Mr. Sato cried. He had just come into the kitchen. “Your work is lovely, Ann!” Ann smiled at her father’s words. “Thanks, Dad,” she said. “I hope other people think so too.”

Two days later Kenji and his friend Nick attended the crafts fair. The school gymnasium was filled with rows and rows of tables. Each hopeful seller had covered a table with handmade items. There were paintings, jewelry, clay pots and dishes, paperweights, colorful boxes, hats-and much more.

It took Kenji and Nick some time to find Ann. She was sitting behind her table. There were only a few fans spread out in front of her. Kenji looked puzzled. “Where are the rest of your fans?” he asked. “I sold them!” she said. Kenji smiled broadly at her. He picked up a fan to show his friend. “Oh, that fan is extremely beautiful!” a woman behind him said. “It is pretty, isn’t it?” Kenji said, handing it to her. “My sister painted it!” he added proudly. “Your sister is quite an artist!” the woman said as she eagerly pulled out her wallet.

Human Cloning(克隆) is Wrong

I’m sure many of you have seen Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Multiplicity, or many of the other movies that describe cloning. Most of what you see in these movies is false. What you don’t know is that cloning could be dangerous, to the clone and to our society as a whole. It’s immoral to have a human clone.

What about identity(身份)? Humans are promised the right to their own personality. What would happen if we ignore those rights by giving them someone else’s genetic identity? True, personality is not fixed in someone’s genes(基因), but the clone would share any physical appearance or genetic fault of the cloned.

Also, there is large power struggle here. Cloning means a degree of power and control over another person’s physical identity and that ignores their rights and their only personality. The person doing the cloning would have more power than any parent would have.

Cloning would also deal with killing embryos(胚胎). You might not have known, but Dolly, the sheep that was cloned in 1996, was one of over 200 sheep embryos and hers was the only embryo that survived. The rest died or were thrown away. Imagine if the failure rate was that high when we started to clone humans. More than 200 embryos, the start of 200 human beings, would die for the sake of just one embryo that would have the same DNA as some one else.

Cloning someone, at this present time, would be extremely dangerous to the birth mother and the clone. In studies done on cows, 4 out of 12 birth mothers died. There is very high failure rate, which is shown in the cloning of Dolly. Even if you had a few good embryos, failures have been noticeable in animal tests.

So, should we work ahead in the world of cloning? I say no. The risks are greater than the benefits. It’s dangerous to the clone and to the birth mother. We would be killing human lives in the process. It would also be a violation(侵害) of the clones right to its own genetic identity and personality.

1.The author thinks human cloning is wrong mainly for ___________ reasons.

       A.2                        B.3                        C.4                        D.5

2.According to the article, what is the author’s opinion about identity?

A.Cloning itself gives parents great power over identity.

B.People’s identity is completely determined by their genes.

C.Government have the rights to confirm people’s identities.

D.Cloning may prevent people from possessing their identities.

3.From Paragraph 4 we can infer that _______________.

A.human cloning is much difficult than animal cloning

B.Dolly is the most successful one among 200 sheep embryos

C.cloning means running the risk of wasting too much effort

D.numbers of baby animals are likely to be created by cloning

4.Why does the author mention some movies in the first paragraph?

A.To introduce the topic of the article.      B.To present his idea about the movies.

C.To state the conclusion first.   D.To make the article unusual.

It’s all hot air!

For hundreds of year, human beings have been deeply interested in the idea of flying, but it was only in the eighteenth century that a piece of practical equipment was designed to achieve this aim. The French brothers Montgolfier observed that paper bags filled with smoke tended to rise. From these small beginnings, they developed the first hot air balloon, and the first manned balloon flight took place at Versailles in 1783.

Almost at once, ballooning became very popular, but it was the gas balloon which became more widely used than the hot air balloon. The gas balloon in turn was replaced by the airship, which gave way to the more reliable aeroplane at the beginning of the twentieth century. But the hot air balloon never died out completely, and during the 1960’s, using new materials and a safer method of producing hot air, it actually took off again.

By the 1980’s, marketing managers had realized that balloons made wonderful advertising boards and soon the skies were full of brightly colored and excitingly shaped advertisements for everything from butter to shoes.

Ballooning is an uncertain activity. Take-off is entirely determined by the local weather conditions. “Safety first!” is the strict rule and pilots who ignore it have short flying careers. Preparing the balloon for flight needs teamwork. The same team will follow the balloon as it flies in order to get it back when it lands, and no one is sure where the balloon will land exactly. The pilot carries out a last-minute check before flying and briefs the passengers. Nothing should be forgotten, as important objects left on the ground are difficult to pick up from 300 meters.

The flight itself takes place silently, interrupted by the very loud noise from the gas burner as more hot air is put into the balloon envelope. Soon, even nervous passengers begin to enjoy the feeling of floating gently over the countryside, admiring the interesting patterns of roads and fields below. There is a feeling that problems have been left behind on the ground. There is a sense of freedom.

Landing can sometimes be uncomfortable, depending on wind speed and ground, but as long as the passengers hold on tight and stay in the basket, there is little danger of injury and every chance that they will want to repeat the experience.

1.Which of the following is correct according to the order of their appearance in history?

A.hot air balloon, gas balloon, aircraft, airship

B.hot air balloon, gas balloon, airship, aircraft

C.gas balloon, hot air balloon, airship, aeroplane

D.gas balloon, hot air balloon, aeroplane, airship

2.According to the article, balloons are used for ________.

A.a(chǎn)dvertising and education                      B.competition and transporting goods

C.entertainment and scientific research      D.entertainment and promoting products

3.What can we know from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4?

A.People are not sure of where the balloon will land.

B.It’s necessary to get well prepared before the flight.

C.It’s important to take as few things as possible to fly.

D.People should be informed how high the balloon will rise.

4.What does the author think of traveling in a hot air balloon?

       A.Dangerous.      B.Frightening.      C.Enjoyable. D.comfortable.
