“Anyone who comes to Buenos Aires and hasn’t seen tango, hasn’t been to Buenos Aires at  all!” This is what Japanese tourist Kuwabara Kazumi learned on her trip to the capital of Argentina.

Kazumi, 27, and her husband Taisuke Hanabusa joined the sea of dancing people during the Buenos Aires Tango Festival and its first World Tango Dance Championships. This year’s annual celebration was held during the first week of March.

Kazumi was one of 4 million tourists at the festival who braved the summer heat of the southern hemisphere. Buenos Aires is the birth place of tango – a city known as the “Paris of the South”.

During the festival, the whole city is gripped by tango fever. Professional dancers – men in dark suits and women in evening gowns – whirl (旋轉(zhuǎn)) on glittering stages in bars.

Tourists rush for lessons with tango masters. The more adventurous even try their steps at the dance parties, which block off entire downtown streets at night. These parties often last until the early hours of the morning.

Tango originated in bars around the ports of Buenos Aries in the late 19th century – after the arrival of European immigrants. It developed from a mix of culture. Influences included the constant rhythms that the African slaves beat on their drums and music from early Spanish colonists. Tango became a hit by the 1920s. And in the 1990s, the dance gained fame in American movies.

Gustavo Sorel, a tango teacher, said the dance is a local invention whose passion is universally understood. “Here one lives the tango, one listens to it and one dances it all the time. As Argentines, this helps us preserve our roots.”

In the 1960s, medical researchers Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe developed a checklist of stressful events. They appreciated the tricky point that any major change can be stressful. Negative events like “serious illness of a family member” were high on the list, but so were some positive life – changing events, like marriage. When you take the Holmes – Rahe test you must remember that the score does not reflect how you deal with stress – it only shows how much you have to deal with. And we now know that the way you handle these events dramatically affects your chances of staying healthy.

By the early 1970s, hundreds of similar studies had followed Holmes and Rahe. And millions of Americans who work and live under stress worried over the reports. Somehow, the research got boiled down to a memorable message. Women’s magazines ran headlines like “Stress causes illness!” If you want to stay physically and mentally healthy, the articles said, avoid stressful events.

But such simplistic advice is impossible to follow. Even if stressful events are dangerous, many – like the death of a loved one – are impossible to avoid. Moreover, any warning to avoid all stressful events is a prescription (處方) for staying away from opportunities as well as trouble. Since any change can be stressful, a person who wanted to be completely free of stress would never marry, have a child, take a new job or move.

The notion that all stress makes you sick also ignores a lot of what we know about people. It assumes we’re all vulnerable and passive in the face of hardship. But what about human initiative (積極性) and creativity? Many come through periods of stress with more physical and mental vigor (活力) than they had before. We also know that a long time without change or challenge can lead to boredom, and physical and mental stress.

1.The passage is mainly about            .

A.what kinds of events cause stress

B.how to cope with sudden changes in life

C.causes of stress and how it affects us

D.stress can be positive factors in life

2.The studies on stress in he early 1970’s led to            .

A.widespread concern over its harmful effects

B.great panic over the mental disorder it could cause

C.a(chǎn)n intensive research into stress – related illness

       D.popular avoidance of stressful jobs

3.What does the underlined word “vulnerable” mean in the last paragraph?

       A.weak                  B.energetic             C.disabled               D.a(chǎn)ctive

4.Why is “such simplistic advice” in the third paragraph impossible to follow?

A.No one can stay on the same job for long.

B.No prescription is effective in relieving stress.

C.People have to get married someday.

D.You could be missing opportunities as well.

5.We can infer from the passage people would become         after experiencing stress.

       A.nervous when faced with difficulties

       B.physically and mentally stressful

C.more capable of dealing with hardship

D.unconcerned with what happens to them

Hundreds of domestic reporters, more than 2,000 tourists from all over the country, and space experts from Japan, Germany, Italy and other countries invited by the Chinese space authorities have gathered at the launch center, waiting to see the historic moment. “I’ve seen launches of satellites for more than 20 times, but it’s the first time for me to see so many people coming here,” said 55 –year – old Sun Xiuying, a local villager.

Space center experts were worried earlier in the day when Xichang experienced an unexpected torrential rainfall from about 4:05 a.m. till 7:10 a. m. on Wednesday, but they were able to breathe a sigh of relief when the weather cleared. Both national and local meteorological observatories forecast cloudy weather for the launch site on Wednesday afternoon. However they said they believed it would not affect the launch mission, and opinion which was shared by technological staff at the site.

Local villagers within a radius of 2.5 km of the launch site and under the trajectory (軌道) of the carrier have been told to move to safe areas two hours prior to the anticipated launch. Tourists  have been charged 800 yuan (105 U.S. dollars) to witness the launch of China’s first lunar satellite. A local travel agency has said that the two observation platforms are capable of holding 2,000 and 500 people respectively, but it is not known how many people paid for the chance.

The moon orbiter, Chang’e – 1, named after a legendary Chinese goddess who flew to the moon, and the carrier Long March 3A have passed all pre – launch tests.

China hopes to become the 17 th nation to join the International Space Station (ISS) project, Vice Minister of Science and Technology Li Xueyong said last week. “The Chinese government has been pursuing a policy of peaceful use of airspace,” Li said.

American beekeeping operations have been hit hard by what scientists call colony collapse disorder. Almost half of their worker bees have disappeared during the past season. C.C.D. has also been reported in Israel, Europe and South America. Bees fly away from the hive and never return. Sometimes they are found dead; other times they are never found. Many crops and trees depend on pollination (授粉) by bees to help them grow.

A new report says virus may be at least partly responsible for the disorder in honey bee colonies in the United States. This virus is called Israeli acute paralysis virus. It was first identified in Israel in 2004. Ian Lipkin at Columbia University in New Yourk and a team reported the new findings in Science magazine. Doctor Lipkin says the virus may not be the only cause. He says it may work with other causes to produce the collapse disorder.

The team found the virus in colonies with the help of a map of honey bee genes that was published last year. They examined thirty colonies affected by the disorder. They found evidence of the virus in twenty – five of them, and in one healthy colony. The next step is further testing of healthy hives.

The researchers suggested that the United States may have imported the disorder in bees from Australia. They say the bees may carry the virus but not be affected.

The idea is that unlike many American bees, the ability of Australian bees to fight disease has not been hurt by the varroa mite. This insect attacks honey bees, which could make the disorder more likely to affect a hive. Australian bee producers reject these suspicions.

And some researchers suspect that bee production in the United States is down mainly because of the weather. Honey bees gather nectar from flowers and trees. The sweet liquid gives them food and material to make honey. But cold weather this spring in the Midwest reduced the flow of nectar in many flowers. Many bees may have starved. Dry weather in areas of the country could also be playing a part.

Wayne Esaias is a NASA space agency scientist who keeps bees in his free time. He lives in central Maryland, where he has found that flowers are blooming a month earlier than they did in 1970, which may be partly responsible for the disorder. Wayne Esaias is organizing a group of beekeepers to document nectar flow around the country.

1.What is the author’s attitude the cause of the bee disorder?

       A.critical                B.neutral                 C.supportive           D.negative

2.The researchers found the virus           .

       A.with the help of C.C.D.

B.by researching the causes of bee death

C.with the help of a map of honey bee genes

D.with the help of a scientist of NASA Space Agency

3.What is the passage mainly about?

A.American beekeeping industry has been strongly influenced by the bee disorder.

B.Studies are being carried out on the causes of the bee disorder, but questions remain.

C.How the causes of the bee disorder in U.S have been found.

D.The bee production in U.S is down.

4.How many possibilities may be involved in the bee disorder according to the passage?

       A.Three                  B.Four                   C.Five                    D.Six

5.We can infer that         from the passage.

A.Israeli acute paralysis virus should be responsible for the disorder.

B.The solution to the disorder will be found eventually.

C.American bees are more likely to defend themselves against hurt from other insects than Australian ones.

D.Many crop and plant production in U.S may be influenced by the bee disorder.
