A recent vote of 16,000 people in 15 countries showed that the United States is widely disliked .The finding surprised many Americans.

The Yahoo news website last week ran an opinion piece with the heading “Ahead: six decades of humiliation(不光彩)” . The author was Ted Rall, a New York-based writer.

“The reason for our declining popularity is no mystery: Bush’s illegal war against Iraq,” said Rall. “But Iraq ,Bush’s war and instances of prisoners being beaten and even murdered aren’t completely unprecedented(史無前例的),” he went on.

American ,in fact ,has a long history and tradition of causing hatred. It began with Theodore Roosevelt’s cruel suppression(鎮(zhèn)壓)of Pilipino insurgents(起義者)in the early 20th century. Then ,in the 1960s and 1970s, American went on to kill two million Vietnamese. More recently ,there have been a series of actions against defenseless nations like Grenada ,Panama and Afghanistan.

“The US has become, perhaps to its surprise ,the biggest danger to peace and stability on the planet,” said Rall.

To win the outside world’s trust, he suggested, the US could learn from Germany ,who was defeated in World War II.

Germany’s remarkable comeback since 1945 gives a lesson for today. During the next six decades the country recovered from total defeat, massive losses , and the shame of occupation. The country concentrated first on economic recovery, then built a political society designed to cause as little offence as possible to the whole world. And finally the country is gradually ready to regain the role it played before the war.

Now the US is the only member of its own Axis of Evil: invading(侵略)and threatening invasions, breaking arms rules ,kidnapping and murdering foreign citizens without cause , refusing to obey international rules.

“But that will change someday-whether we’re forced to change, as was Germany ,or whether we choose a different path on our own. What’s troubling is how much time it will take for the rest of the world to trust us as much as they trust Germany,” said Rall.

1.According to Rall, what is the most important factor for America’s declining popularity?

A.Roosevelt’s cruel suppression of Pilipino insurgents.

       B.Killing two million Vietnamese.

       C.Rapid developing in economic.

       D.Bush’s illegal war against Iraq.

2.According to passage ,we can infer that the author is           the present performance of Germany.

       A.a(chǎn)pproving of        B.a(chǎn)gainst                C.scolding              D.beautifying

3.The author thinks America        its present invading policy.

A.will not forever change                         B.will someday change

C.will further strengthen                          D.will soon think over

4.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A.The US Is Trying Widely Disliked.

B.The US Is Trying to Invade Some Other Countries.

C.The US Is Trying to Change Its Policy

D.The US Is Trying to Get on Well with the World.

Summers’ “intrinsic(本身的)difference” theory is biased(偏見)against women. He can’t be president because he has lost the support of many female, and male students.

Summers should have realized the theory was controversial before he opened his mouth. As the leader of perhaps the world’s foremost research university, he should have known his opinions carry weight . If he didn’t realize that ,how could he be a leader of so many elites(精英)?

Judging from what Summers has done over the past five years, he works like a CEO. But university presidents are not corporate CEOs. A CEO has the authority to implement a new agenda by ordering subordinates around-and firing those who resist .But in a university, bold vision is not enough .You have to build consensus(共識). Obviously Summers didn’t achieve that.

The turbulent five years reign of Harvard President Lawrence H. Summers was brought to a close last week when he said he would resign in three months.

He embattled president was pressured in resignation, after controversy began last January.

Lawrence angered many after stating at an academic conference that “intrinsic difference” between men and women might help explain why fewer women than men reach top-level careers in math and science. Amid international attention, he was accused of discrimination against women.

However ,Summers also served Harvard with extraordinary vision and vitality(活力). He increased access to a Harvard with education with financial aid, boosted science programs ,and diversified the school’s faculty.

The controversy is: Should Summers-a person with bold and sometimes offensive opinions, who at the same time brings something good to Harvard-be fined?

1.In Summers’ opinion,         .

A.women are better than men in math and science

B.women are equal to men in math and science

C.fewer women are equal to men in math and science

D.women and men are both good in math and science

2.From the passage, we can infer that         .

A.a(chǎn) university president and a CEO have the same authority

B.a(chǎn) university president should have bold vision and the same opinions with others

C.a(chǎn) university president can fire anyone who resists

D.a(chǎn) university president can order his or her subordinates to carry out a new agenda

Latin cultures don’t have formal or traditional ceremonies surrounding gift giving .However, business relationships are developed as personal relationships. And in order to build a strong and lasting friendship, gifts are a thoughtful way to make a good first impression, and socially continue showing generosity, appreciation, and kindness.

Because relationships become personal, find out about your Brazilian counterpart or client’s lifestyle. Then using these details, select gifts that will reflect how important this person is . Always have the gift wrapped in a quality paper ,as this is a subtle detail that can express the value of the friendship. Items associated with death or funerals that shouldn’t be used include handkerchiefs, and yellow, red or white flowers.
