When I was still a student, I found it hard to get back on track with school after the holiday break ended.Fortunately, I could also make up for late homework. But as a working professional, I no longer have that luxury — any delay or mistakes in my work caused by a holiday hangover may end up being costly. The good news is that with a simple strategy in place, it won’t take much effort to return to your normal productivity level.

Plan your post-holiday work schedule even before the holiday begins. This is the primary reason why I easily got back to my regular workload. As soon as the holiday was over, all I had to do was look at the schedule I prepared two weeks earlier to see what I needed to do.Without it, I would have probably spent a day or two regrouping.

I have to admit that it’s wise to work a little during the holidays. If you feel that’s being too much of a killjoy, choose to work on light tasks — perhaps checking your mail or brainstorming. The point is to avoid work being overwhelming after the holidays. It doesn’t mean you’ll get up in the middle of a family gathering and start typing away in your laptop.Make yourself part of the festivities, only get some work done during times when less is happening.

Stick with your normal body clock. Many people feel tired post-holidays because their body clocks have adjusted to a later waking-up time.If this has happened to you, make sure to try and reset your body clock back to suit your ideal sleeping hours before the regular workweek starts.

It’s important to relax.I know some people who actually spend the holidays being completely stressed out preparing gifts and celebrations. The irony is, they don’t end up enjoying their supposed “vacation time” from work.Avoid falling into that trap and catch up on your sleep.

A new age is coming.Call it what you will: the service economy, the information age, the knowledge society. It all translates to a fundamental change in the way we work.Already we’re partly there, the percentage of people who earn their living by making things has fallen dramatically in the Western World.Today the majority of jobs in America, Europe and Japan are in the service industry, and the number is on the rise.More women are in the work force than ever before. There are more part-time jobs.More people are self-employed.But the range of the economic transformation can’t be measured by numbers alone, because it also is giving rise to important new way of thinking about the nature of work itself.Long-held ideas about jobs and careers, the skills needed to succeed, even the relation between individuals and employers — all these are being challenged.

We have only to look behind us to get some sense of what may lie ahead. No one looking ahead 20 years possibly could have foreseen the ways in which a single invention, the chip, would transform our world thanks to its applications in personal computers, digital communications and factory robots.Tomorrow’s achievements in biotechnology, artificial intelligence or even some still unimagined technology could produce a similar wave of dramatic changes. But one thing is certain: information and knowledge will become even more valid, and the people who possess it, whether they work in manufacturing or services, will have the advantage and produce the wealth.Computer knowledge will become as basic a requirement as the ability to read and write. The ability to solve problems by applying information instead of performing routine tasks will be valued above all else.If you cast your mind ahead 10 years, information service will be superior. It will be the way you do your job.

1.A characteristic of the new age mentioned in the passage is that _______

A.the service industry mainly relies on females

      B.manufacturing industries are steadily increasing

C.more people are in the service industry than before

D.the work in the service industry is more comfortable than that in manufacturing industry

2.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.People’s traditional concepts about jobs need changing.

B.The relation between employees and employers is becoming tense.

C.More women than men are in the work force.

D.Part-time jobs are more welcome than full-time jobs.

3.By mentioning the invention of “the chip”, the author means to say that_______

A.we haven’t paid enough attention to the importance of high technology

B.the chip is the most important invention today

C.the power of science and technology is beyond our imagination

D.it’s a great challenge to apply new inventions to our life

4.We may draw a conclusion from the passage that _______

A.information will play a greater role in people’s work and daily life in the future

B.we can foresee the future if technology develops fast enough

C.the ability of performing routine tasks gives you an advantage in work

D.robots will replace people to do all the work both in manufacturing and service industries

5.The author’s attitude to the coming age is _______

      A.doubtful         B.enthusiastic     C.satisfied              D.uncertain

When we think about giving help to developing countries, we often think about giving money so that these countries can build schools and hospitals, buy food and medicine, or find clean water supplies. These seem to be most important basic needs of the people we are trying to help. However, it's far from enough. We have to come up with some better ideas to help them.

I was very surprised, then ,when I read about a plan to make cheap laptop computers for children in developing countries.A man called Nicholas Negroponte invented a cheap laptop computer, which can run without electricity. He decided to invent this computer after he visited a school in Cambodia.

The laptop which Mr. Negroponte has designed is a little different from the normal laptop computers you can buy in shops. One difference is that it will be covered in rubber so that it is very strong and won't be damaged easily. As electricity supply can be a problem in developing countries, the computer also has a special handle so that children can wind the computer up to give it extra power when needed.

These special laptop computers will cost less than $100 and Mr. Negroponte wants to build as many as 15 million machines in the first year of production. The idea is that these computers will help the children's education as they will be able to access the Internet. These computers might not help the people in developing countries immediately, but by improving children's education they should help people to find their own solutions to their problems in the long term.

Another idea to help children in developing countries is to recycle old mobile phones so that they can be used again. In the UK, and, probably in many other countries too, millions of mobile phones are thrown away every year. The waste created by throwing away these old phones is very bad for the environment, so it seems to be an excellent idea to recycle them.In this way we shall be able to achieve two important goals at the same time.We will reduce the waste we produce and help others. In other words, we will be able to " kill two birds with one stone ",  and that is always a good thing.

1.It's an excellent idea to recycle old mobile phones because _______.

A.it reduces waste and can help others

B.it prevents waste and can earn lots of money

C.it can send the waste produced by developed countries to other countries

D.it is good for the environment and very educative for phone users

2.The author gives the example of Mr. Negroponte's cheap computers _______.

A.to show what high tech can bring us.

B.to illustrate the kindness of people in the developed countries

C.to show how to find business opportunities in developing countries

D.to give an example of how to help developing countries

3.Which of the following statements is TRUE about Mr. Negroponte's cheap computers?

A.His computers don’t need any power to function well.

B.His computers are covered with rubber so that they are very cheap.

C.His computers will help children in developing countries to have better education.

D.His computers will help people in developing countries to find all the solutions.

4.Which of the following can be used to replace the underlined word in Para3?

       A.blow                 B.turn                  C.push                  D.lift

5.Where does this passage probably come from?

       A.A novel               B.A newspaper        C.A lecture             D.An advertisement

It’s no secret that raising children can be expensive, but how about nearly a quarter of a million dollars expensive? A government report released on Tuesday says a middle-income family with a child born last year will spend about $221,000 raising that child through age 17.

The report identified housing as the largest single expense, followed by food and childcare and education costs. The $221,000 in expenses rises to about $292,000 when adjusted for inflation(通貨膨脹).Families with more income ______________ on child-related costs, the report said.A two-parent family that earns less than $57,000 annually will spend about $160,000 on a child from birth through high school. Those with an income between $57,000 and $99,000 spend about $221,000 and those with higher incomes are expected to spend roughly $367,000.

Most single-parent households in the U.S.make less than $57,000 and are expected to spend about 7 percent less on child-rearing costs, compared to two-parent households in that same income group, according to the report.Costs of raising a child are highest in the urban northeast and lowest in the urban south and rural areasThe report helps courts and states determine child-support guidelines and foster care payments. It does not address costs specifically related to childbearing(分娩) and paying for college.

One of the largest changes over time has been the increase in costs related to caring for young children. The report was first issued in 1960, when such costs were largely very tiny, but with more working families turning to outside help with childcare, it has grown to be a significant expense for many families. The report does not give total costs related to early childcare.A mother of three Raben Andrews of St.Louis said the government figures sounded right to her.“well, that’s not half of it,” joked the 42-year-old public school teacher.“ I still have to put the children through college.”
