Each time a city building goes up, the grass in that spot and trees that once reached up to the sky are replaced by a swath of asphalt (瀝青) roof.

Add to that the building of roads, parking lots, and yet more buildings, and the total lost green space can have a very real effect on a city's air temperature, air quality, and energy costs. On a summer day in most American cities, an asphalt roof can feel like the inside of an oven. But what if we could replace the hot roof of each skyscraper or building in a city with grass or a garden? 

Whether it holds vegetable gardens, wildflowers, or meadow grasses, a green roof can lower the temperature above a building by 60 degrees, which can reduce the building's energy costs and, if used more widely, could decrease a city's total energy costs, reduce power-plant emissions (散發(fā)), and improve air quality and public health. 

But that's not all -- green roofs are a great way to deal with water management in urban areas with mixed sewerage(排污) systems because they soak up extra precipitation(沉淀物). They are also a good way to provide shelters for urban wildlife, and actually extend the life span of the roof itself. And green roofs do something else: They can beautify the city -- whether you're on the 3rd floor or the 30th. So that will be a great achievement.

Besides, cross the road as quickly as possible. And once you're over, continue along the pavement as far away from the kerb as possible.

Sitting on the driver's side of a bus can increase your exposure by 10% compared with sitting on the side nearest to the pavement. And sitting upstairs on a double-decker can reduce your exposure too. It's difficult to say whether travelling on an underground train is better or worse than taking the bus, but the air pollution on underground trains tends to be less toxic(有毒的)by weight than that found at street level.

HARTLAND, Wis. (AP) ― Lauren Panos was surprised when she walked into her ninth-grade English class in the fall and saw there were no boys.

Her parents had not told her they had enrolled her in a new all-girls class at Arrowhead High School in Hartland. Panos still isn't sold on the idea.

"All the girls there, they can talk out of turn," the 14-year-old said. "We are bored of tasks and it's really upsetting."

More public school systems are looking at separating boys and girls, whether for certain classes or by total schools, after the federal government opened the door last fall. Supporters say separating students by sex helps them learn better and allows boys and girls to explore subjects they may not otherwise take.

"Boys just make a bigger trouble in the class," Panos' classmate, Alyson Douglas, 15, said “I likes not worrying about boys causing disruptions.”

Presently, nationwide, at least 253 public schools offer single-sex classes and 51 schools are entirely single sex, according to the National Association for Single Sex Public Education. In1995, just three public schools offered single-sex classes.

Critics of same-sex classrooms argue that proven methods of improving education should be carried out instead of one that divides boys and girls.

"Too many schools feel they can carry out a social experiment with students' education with really the weakest of theories," said Emily Martin, deputy director of the American Civil Liberties Union's Women's Rights Project.

Single-sex schools are an "illusionary(錯覺的) silver bullet," said Lisa Maatz, director of public policy and government relations for the American Association of University Women. They distract(分散) from real problems and do not offer proven solutions such as lower class sizes and enough funding, she said.

"I would suggest that for many of our kids and families, especially in Milwaukee, it's a question of choice," Spence said. "We have a series of choices in Milwaukee and I just think this should be one additional choice."

◆200 dead as Brazilian plane crashes(墜落) in Sao Paulo

Up to 200 people were dead after a passenger plane with 176 people aboard slid off the runway on landing and hit a fuel storage tank at Sao Paulo's Congonhas airport on Tuesday.

Brazilian airline TAM said that 170 passengers and 6 crew(機組人員) were aboard the Airbus A320 flying from Porto Alegre in southern Brazil to Sao Paulo when it lost control on landing and slid off the wet runway.

Brazilian news agency Folha reported up to 200 people were dead, including some victims on the ground.

Two people were killed Saturday in two separate plane crashes in the United States, media reports said.

In Dayton, Ohio, a plane crashed on a runway of the Dayton International Airport while performing during the Vectren Dayton Air Show. The pilot, Jim LeRoy, was taken to Miami Valley Hospital and was announced dead. The air show was canceled.

Also on the same day, two single-engine war planes at an experimental air show collided(相撞) in Wisconsin while landing, killing one of the pilots and injuring the other.

My dream ended when I was born. Although I never knew it then, I just held on to something that would never come to pass. Dreams really do exist. But in the morning when you wake up, they are remembered just as a dream. That is what happened to me.

I always had the dream to dance like a beautiful ballerina（芭蕾舞女演員）turning around and around and hearing people applaud for me. When I was young, I would turn around and around in the fields of wildflowers that grew in my backyard. 

Reality woke me up when I heard someone saying, "I don't know why you bother trying to dance. Ballerinas are pretty and slender(苗條) girls. Besides, you don't have the talent to even be a ballerina." I remember how those words hurt every feeling in my body. I fell to the ground and wept for hours.
