It was a cold grey day in late November. The weather had changed overnight, when a backing wind brought a pale sky and a muzzling rain with it, and although it was now only a little after two o’clock in the afternoon the gray of a winter evening seemed to have closed upon the hills, surrounding them in mist. It would be dark by four. The leather seats felt damp to the hands, and there must have been a small crack in the roof, because now and again little drips of rain fell softly through, polluting the leather and leaving a dark – blue stain like a spot of ink. The wind came in, at times shaking the coach as it traveled round the bend of the road, and in the exposed places on the high ground it blew with such force that the whole body of the coach trembled and swayed, rocking between the high wheels like a drunken man.
The driver, muffled (裹住) in a greatcoat to his ears, bent almost double in his seat in a faint endeavor to gain shelter from his own shoulders. The few passengers pressed together for warmth, exclaiming all together when the coach sank into a heavier rut (車轍) than usual, and one old fellow, who had kept up a constant complaint ever since he had joined the coach at Truro, rose from his seat in anger; and, feeling with the window – frame, let the window down with a crash, bringing a shower of rain upon himself and his fellow – passengers. He thrust his head out and shouted up to the driver, scolding him in a angry voice for a rogue and a murderer; that they would all be dead before they reached Bodmin if he persisted in driving at dangerous speed; they had no breath left in their bodies as it was, and he would never travel by coach again.

Most people think that the older you get, the harder it is to learn a new language. That is, they believe that children learn more easily and efficiently than adults. Thus, at some point in our lives, maybe around age 12 or 13, we lose the ability to learn languages well. Is this idea a fact or myth(懸念)?
Is it true that children learn a foreign language more efficiently than adults? On the contrary, research studies suggest that the opposite may be true. One report, on 2,000 Danish children studying Swedish, concluded that the teenagers learned more, in less time, than the younger children. Another report, on Americans learning Russian, showed a direct improvement of ability over the age range tested; that is, the ability to learn increased as the age increased, from childhood to adulthood.
There are several possible explanations for these findings. For one thing, adults know more about the world and therefore are able to understand meanings more easily than children. Moreover, adults can use logical(邏輯的) thinking to help themselves see patterns in the language. Finally, adults have more self-discipline (self-control) than children.
All in all, it seems that the common idea that children are better language learners than adults may not be a fact, but a myth.

74. The reason why adults understand meanings more easily than children is that ____.
A. adults have more self-discipline
B. adults like to play more than children
C. adults have more knowledge than children
D. adults accept new things more easily than children
75. Which of the following possible explanations for older student’s better achievement is NOT mentioned in the above passage?

There’re five people at our table, including myself. I’ve already learnt a great deal about them in the short time we’ve been at sea, although we rarely meet except at meal times.
First of all, there’s Dr Stone. He’s a man of about sixty five, with gray hair and a friendly face. He gave up his work a short while ago and is now traveling round the world before he retires to some quiet country village. As a young man, he served for many years as a doctor in the Army and visited many countries. He’s told us a lot about the city to which we are going.
Then there’s “Grandmother”. I call her that because her name escapes me. In spite of being a grandmother, she looks rather young, not more than fifty, She’s on her way to visit a daughter who went to Australia some years ago. Naturally she is very excited at the thought of seeing her again, and her three grandchildren, whom she has never seen.
Then there’s a man I don’t care for very much, an engineer by the name of Barlow. He has been on leave in England and is now returning to his work in Singapore.
The other person who sits at our table is Mrs. Hunt. I’ve found out hardly anything about her. She’s extremely quiet and rarely talks, except to consult(咨詢)the doctor about children’s various illness. She’s on her way to join her husband in India.
60. What can we know about Mr. Stone?
A. He is a doctor in the Army now.
B. He is going to give up his work.
C. He knows a lot about the city the author is going to.
D. He has been retired for many years.
61. The writer calls the second person “Grandmother” because_______.
A. she looks old B. She has three daughters
C. he respects her D. he can’t think of her name
62. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Dr Stone lives in a quiet village now. B. “Grandmother” is an Australian.
C. Barlow works in Singapore D. Mrs Hunt is a woman of many words.

Most of us don't like to think too much about rubbish. _______71_______. However, household waste is a major contributor to our planet's waste problem. Like it or not, it needs to be managed if we are to have a brighter green future.
When it comes to being responsible for our own rubbish, the best way to approach it is by following the three golden rules of waste management, or the '3Rs'—Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
"The order is important. _______72_______," says Eugene Tay, Director of Green Future Solutions in Singapore. "Recycling still affects the environment and should be done last after reduce and reuse."
But, when our efforts to reduce and reuse still result in an overflowing rubbish bin, the advantages of recycling cannot be ignored. "_______73_______," says Amy Ho, Managing Director of World Wide Fund For Nature in Singapore. "The damage to our environment could then be slowed down as a result."
In fact, by recycling just one plastic bottle, you are saving not just the material to make a new one, but you also stop it from getting thrown into a landfill (垃圾掩埋場) for up to 700 years—and that's before it even starts to rot. _______74_______.
Recycling is so important that we really have no excuse not to do the simplest of household tasks that will make a difference.
"_______75_______," says Ho. "Starting with recycling grey water for gardening purposes, to recycling materials such as glass, paper and iron--it all reduces the use of raw materials."
A. We put it in the bin and don't think too far beyond that
B. The collective action of individuals can make a significant effect
C. It's important for every household to make good use of grey water
D. Waste reduction and reuse is usually the best way to decrease waste
E. The three rules of waste management should be followed by every household
F. Recycling reduces the use of raw materials and so protects our natural resources
G. Recycling just 10% plastic bottles would keep 90 million kilograms of plastic out of landfills
