A good night’s sleep in the early years of life could be very important in preventing a child becoming obese, say scientists. Babies and pre-school children who sleep for less than ten hours a night are more likely to be overweight when they are older, research has found. Experts believe that those who do not get enough sleep are more likely to feel hungry and want more calorie-rich food during the day.
Former research has linked sleeping with obesity in adults and teenagers, but this is one of the first to look at very young children. Researchers from the Universities of Washington and California looked at the sleeping habits of almost 1,000 children under the age of five. They found those who had less than ten hours’ sleep were twice as likely to be overweight five years later.
Childhood obesity has doubled over the past 10 years. A quarter of secondary school pupils are now judged to be so overweight that their health is in danger. Experts believe sleep, or lack(缺乏)of it, could be a major cause of this. On average children are sleeping for an hour less than they did 30 years ago. Last year Chinese researchers looked at more than 5,000 youngsters and found that those who were able to catch up on (補充)sleep at the weekend were far less likely to get body weight problems. Scientists have also found a link between lack of sleep and diabetes(糖尿。. Last year Canadian researchers discovered those who did not get seven or eight hours’ sleep a night were two and a half times more likely to become sick.
The underlined word “obese” in the first paragraph may mean .
A.quite protective B.very sad
C.very fat D.quite young
According to Chinese researchers, if a person who lacks sleep can get more sleep during weekends, .
A.he won’t get hungry easily B.he will feel tired all the time
C.there will be little chance of him becoming fat
D.it will be very hard for him to fall asleep at night
From the passage we know .
A.too little sleep will result in illness besides obesity
B.in the past people didn’t connect sleep with weight
C.fat children must have slept less than 10 hours five years ago
D.most children are unhealthy because of little sleep
What would be the best title of the passage?
A.A good night’s sleep helps the development of kids’ brain!
B.Ten hours’ sleep prevents overweight in kids!
C.Children are sleeping much less nowadays!
D.More teenagers get weight problems!
Where can you most probably read this passage?

Many teenagers feel that the most important people in their lives are their friends. They believe that their family members, especially their parents, don’t know them as well as their friends do. In large families, it is often for brothers and sisters to fight with each other and then they can only go to their friends for advice. It is very important for teenagers to have one good friend or many friends. Even when they are not with their friends, they usually spend a lot of time talking among themselves on the phone. This communication is very important in children’s growing up, because friends can discuss something difficult to say to their family members.
However, parents often try to choose their children’s friends for them. Some parents may even stop their children from meeting their good friends. The question of “choice” is an interesting one. Have you ever thought of the following questions?
Who choose your friends?
Do you choose your friends or your friends choose you?
Have you got a good friend your parents don’t like?

We've used the wind as an energy source for a long time. The Babylonians and Chinese were using wind power to pump water for irrigating crops 4,000 years ago, and sailing boats were around long before that. Wind power was used in the Middle Ages, in Europe, to grind(磨碎) corn, which is where the term "windmill" comes from.
We can use the energy in the wind by building a tall tower, with a large propellor on the top. The wind blows the propellor round, which turns a generator to produce electricity. We tend to build many of these towers together, to make a "wind farm" and produce more electricity. The more towers, the more wind, and the larger the propellors, the more electricity we can make. It's only worth building wind farms in places that have strong, steady winds, although boats and caravans(大篷車)increasingly have small wind generators to help keep their batteries charged.
The best places for wind farms are in coastal areas, at the tops of rounded hills, open plains and gaps in mountains—places where the wind is strong and reliable. Some are offshore. To be worthwhile, you need an average wind speed of around 25 km/h. Most wind farms in the UK are in Cornwall or Wales. Isolated places such as farms may have their own wind generators. In California, several “wind farms” supply electricity to homes around Los Angeles.
The propellors are large, to obtain energy from the largest possible volume of air. The blades can be angled to cope with varying wind speeds. Some designs use vertical turbines(垂直渦輪機), which don't need to be turned to face the wind. The towers are tall, to get the propellors as high as possible, up to where the wind is stronger. This means that the land beneath can still be used for farming.
The first paragraph aims to introduce to us _______.
A. the function of wind power B. the source of wind power
C. the nations using wind power D. the history of using wind power
How does a wind power work?
A. The generator turns the propellor blades and produce electricity.
B. The tall tower helps turn the energy in the air into electricity.
C. Warm air rises and makes the propellor move round.
D. The propellor blown round by wind turns the generator to produce electricity.
The best places for building the wind farm are places where _______.
A. boats and caravans can often be seen B. isolated farms don’t have enough electricity
C. there are less human activities D. the wind is strong and reliable
We can infer from the passage that _______.
A. wind farms will not take up too much farming land
B. wind farms need no fuel because wind is free
C. the blades can be angled to turn to face the wind wherever it comes from
D. the higher and larger the towers are, the stronger the wind is
What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. Where to build a wind farm. B. ABC of the using of wind energy.
C. How to make best use of wind. D. Wind energy is the best energy.

For thousands of years ’ the most important two buildings in any British village have been the
church and the pub. In fact, until a place has a church and a pub,it isn ’ t really considered a
community worthy of a name. Traditionally, the church and the pub are at the heart of any village
or town, since it is where people gather to give and receive news. In fact, the word ‘ pub' is short
for 4 public house'.
That's how it used to be, but things are beginning to change. It is said that the credit
decline is causing 39 British pubs a week to go out of business. People don ’ t have lots of spare
money to spend on beer. Recently, the UK government banned smoking in all pubs, and that may
also have affected the number of customers going to pubs.
This decline is happening despite the fact that in 2005 the UK government started to allow
pubs to stay open after 11 p. m. Previously,with 11 p. m. as closing time,customers would have
to drink quite quickly, meaning they sometimes got more drunk than they would if allowed to drink
slowly. The British habit of drinking a lot very quickly is known as,binge drinking ’ (狂飲),
and it causes some long - term health problems for people and problems with violent crime for
??communities. The UK government is changing the law to discourage binge drinking, and regularly
spends money on television advertisements to warn people of the problems of drinking too much.
In order to save their businesses, pubs are trying to change with the market. Now, there are
a number of different types of pubs.
As you can see, British pubs now offer something for everyone. A lot of pubs used to be
working men' s clubs, meaning that women could not usually enter. Today, however, women can
freely enter 99% of pubs without experiencing any problems. Perhaps things are changing for the
better after alL
