One evening I went out and left my 17-year-old son in charge of his 8-year-old brother and 4-year-old sister. On this occasion, the work was made less troublesome by the presence of his girlfriend.I left with complete confidence that the older children would do a wonderful job of babysitting the younger children.Later,I discovered that complete confidence was the last thing I should have left home with.

I had decided to return home earlier than planned so that my son and his girlfriend could go out.I called home with this happy news. But instead of hearing his cheerful, grateful voice on the other end of the line, all I heard was the sound of a telephone ringing.

It was,I should point out, after 10 p.m.,when the two younger children should have been in bed.and when the two older children should have been answering the phone.“I’ll give him a lesson.”I said.I decided they must be outside. Why they might be outside at 10∶30 on a winter night I had no idea, but it was the only explanation I could come up with.

Finally,in desperation,I called his girlfriend’s house.After what seemed like countless rings,his girlfriend answered.“Yes,”she said brightly,“He’s right here.”

He came on the phone.I was not my usual calm, rational(理智的)self. After all,one of the rules of survival for modern parents is that you can’t trust modem teenagers.“Where are the children?”I said.He said they were with him. They had done nothing wrong. My son had taken the younger children over to his girlfriend’s house just for ice cream and cake. This was too good to be believed.Well,it turns out that I shouldn’t have believed it.It was only part of the truth.

The following Saturday evening we were at my parents home, celebrating my birthday. My oldest son gave me the children’s gifts.Mounted and framed were a series of lovely color photographs of my children, dressed in their best clothes, and wearing their most wonderful expressions. They are pictures to treasure a lifetime, all taken by the father of my son’s girlfriend.

Paul, the oracle octopus (神算章魚), was given a replica (復(fù)制品) of the World Cup as a reward for his perfect eight-for-eight record in predicting the results of matches.

The two-year-old octopus with possible supernatural powers turned into a worldwide celebrity for accurately predicting the German team’s five World Cup wins as well as their two defeats. Paul also tipped Spain to beat Netherlands in the final.

“We have had a lot of offers for Paul but he will definitely be staying with us and returning to his usual job-making children smile,” Sea Life spokeswoman Tanja Munzig in Oberhausen said after presenting Pual with the World Cup replica.

There’s no rational(合理的)reasons why Paul always got it right. Bettors around the world made small fortunes based on Paul’s guess, said Graham Sharpe, media relations director at William Hill in London. “I’ve seen a lot of things in my lifetime but this is the first time I’ve ever seen people making their picks based on what an octopus tells them. We had people coming in saying they didn’t know how to place a bet but heard about this German octopus and wanted to bet with him. It’s funny. But he kept getting it right.” said Sharpe.

Sharpe said that anyone who had placed a 10-pound accumulator bet(累計(jì)下注)on Paul’s prediction from the start of the World Cup would have won 3,000 pounds($4,500)by the end of the tournament.

Paul’s home at Sea Life aquarium(水族館)in Oberhausen has been crowded with visitors and media from across Europe. Many networks broadcast his predicting live. Many networks broadcast his picks live. Hundreds were on hand to watch the World Cup replica lowered into his tank on Monday, 12 July, 2010.

Paul was rewarded a replica of the Word Cup because he           .

A. will celebrate his birthday soon

B. predicted the results of matches accurately

C. helped beat Netherlands in the final

D. helped many fans earn much money

If a fan had placed a 200-pound accumulator bet on Paul’s prediction, he would have won

            during the tournament.

A. $30,000           B. $45,000           C. $60,000             D. $90,000

The underlined word “tipped” in the 2nd paragraph probably means           .

A. ordered           B. announced         C. predicted             D. helped

From what Sharpe said we can learn that           .

A. it’s amazing for Paul to make more exact prediction than people

B. octopus like Paul may all have the ability to predict exactly

C. it’s common for people to believe in sea life for prediction

D. we’d better not bet with animals when we have trouble making our picks

We can learn from this passage that           .

A. Paul used to be children’s favorite sea life

B. it’s useless to bet with the oracle octopus

C. Paul was born with the ability to predict World Cup results

D. Germany will never be beaten if Paul stays with them

Sharks have gained unfair reputation for being large fierce sea animals. That humanity’s unfounded fear and hatred of these ancient creatures are leading to a worldwide slaughter (大屠殺) may result in the extinction of many larger, coastal shark species. The shark is the victim of a warped (有偏見的) attitude of wildlife protection; we strive (努力) only to protect the beautiful, non-threatening parts of our environment. And, in our efforts to restore only non-threat parts of our earth, we ignore other important parts.

A perfect illustration of this attitude is the contrasting attitude towards another large sea animal, the dolphin. During the 1980s, environmentalists in the United States objected to the practice of hunting tuna (金槍魚) in the Pacific Ocean since these nets also caught dolphins. The environmentalists generated enough political and economic pressure to prevent tuna companies from buying tuna that had been caught in drift nets. In contrast to this effort, the populations of sharks in the Pacific Ocean have decreased to the point of extinction and there has been very little effort by the same environmentalism to save this important species of wildlife in water. Sharks are among the oldest creatures on earth, having survived in the seas for more than 350 million years. They are extremely efficient animals, feeding on wounded or dying animals, thus performing an important role in nature of knocking out the weaker animals in a species. Just the fact that species such as the Great White Shark have managed to live in the oceans for so many millions of years is enough proof of their efficiency and adaptability to changing environment. It is time for humans, who may not survive another 1,000 years at the rate they are damaging the planet, to cast away their fears and begin considering the protection of sharks as creatures that may provide us with an insight into our own survival.

The best summary of the passage is __________.

   A. sharks have such a bad reputation

   B. how sharks become some of the oldest creatures on earth

   C. sharks should be put under wildlife protection

   D. the campaign to save dolphins was not extended to save sharks

How long have sharks been living on the planet?

   A. More than 25 million years.

   B. More than 150 million years.

   C. More than 350 million years.

   D. More than 500 million years.

   A. Specific(細(xì)節(jié)) to general.                B. Cause and effect.

   C. Statement and example.                  D. Time order.

How did environmentalists manage to protect dolphins?

   A. They prevented fishermen from selling them for meat.

   B. They pressured fishermen into protecting dolphins by law.

   C. They created shelters where dolphin fishing was not allowed.

   D. They brought political pressure against tuna companies.
