Feeling blue about world? "Cheer up," says science writer Matt Ridley. "The world has never been a better
place to live in, and it will keep on getting better both for humans and for nature."
Ridley calls himself a rational optimist-rational, because he's carefully weighed the evidence; optimistic,
because that evidence shows human progress to be both unavoidable and good. And this is what he's set out
to prove from a unique point of view in his most recent book, The Rational Optimist. He views mankind as a
grand enterprise that, on the whole, has done little but progress for 100,000 years. He backs his findings with
hard facts gathered through years of research.
Here's how he explains his views.
     1) Shopping fuels invention
It is reported that there are more than ten billion different products for sale in London alone. Even allowing
for the many people who still live in poverty, our own generation has access to more nutritious food, more
convenient transport, bigger houses, better cars, and of course, more pounds and dollars than any who lived
before us. This will continue as long as we use these things to make other things. The more we specialize and
exchange, the better off we'll be.
     2) Brilliant advances
One reason we are richer, healthier, taller, cleverer, longer-lived and freer than ever before is that the four
most basic human needs-food, clothing, fuel and shelter-have grown a lot cheaper. Take one example. In
1800 a candle providing one hour's light cost six hours' work. In the 1880s the same light from an oil lamp
took 15 minutes' work to pay for. In 1950 it was eight seconds. Today it's half second.
     3) Let's not kill ourselves for climate change
Mitigating (減輕) climate change could prove just as damaging to human welfare as climate change itself.
A child that dies from indoor smoke in a village, where the use of fossil-fuel (化石燃料) electricity is forbidden
by well-meaning members of green political movements trying to save the world, is just as great a tragedy as
a child that dies in a flood caused by climate change. If climate change proves to be mild, but cutting carbon
causes real pain, we may well find that we have stopped a nose-bleed by putting a tourniquet (止血帶) around
our necks.
1. What is the theme of Ridley's most recent book?
A. Weakness of human nature.
B. Concern about climate change.
C. Importance of practical thinking.
D. Optimism about human progress.
2. How does Ridley look at shopping?
A. It encourages the creation of things.
B. It results in shortage of goods.
C. It demands more fossil fuels.
D. It causes a poverty problem.
3. The candle and lamp example is used to show that _____.
A. oil lamps give off more light than candles
B. shortening working time brings about a happier life
C. advanced technology helps to produce better candles
D. increased production rate leads to lower cost of goods
4. What does the last sentence of the passage imply?
A. Cutting carbon is necessary in spite of the huge cost.
B. Overreaction to climate change may be dangerous.
C. People's health is closely related to climate change.
D. Careless medical treatment may cause great pain.

Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the
passage.
                                                                My First Long Run
Two weeks ago, I had a quarrel with my husband. After he had driven off in anger, I realized that I wasn't
going to feel any better just sitting there. Feeling abandoned and guilty, I put on my gym shoes to get some
fresh air.
Our driveway has a slope (斜坡) that is easier just to jog down if you are lazy, taking advantage of gravity.
Instead of stopping at the end of the lope, I decided to see if I could just jog to the end of the street. I had tried
a few moths ago and failed miserably. Since that first attempt I had been jogging regularly and was significantly
fitter, but still very lazy. However this time around I managed to reach the stop sign with ease and I figured I
would go a little further.
After about one kilometer, however, I noticed that my upper body was tense. To make the movement easier
I had to relax my body, and tried to take deep breaths of fresh air.
I kept giving myself the excuse to stop. No one would be disappointed. No one would even know. But I
didn't stop. I wanted to keep going harder, better, faster, stronger. To my great surprise, I ran 4.9 km in 31
minutes. When I got back, I had tears in my eyes. I did some thing I thought I could never do.
It was the first run of my life. Since then, I have improved my stride (步幅) and time. After every run I feel
fitter, happier and motivated to keep progressing. I love the runner's high. I normally jog because I want to look
good. I want to run because it makes me feel good.

Attitude is one of the most important factors in determining success for all people. Successful people have
one thing in common-an expectant (期待的) attitude of success. Most people begin each morning in neutral
and react to events of the day. You can be one of the successful people in life by starting each day with a
positive attitude, a gratitude for the opportunities you have, and an expectancy (期待) of the best for yourself.
People tend to live up to expectations. We get out of life just about what we put into it. Our environment
becomes a mirror of our spirit, our attitude, and expectations. If we set a great goal, we get great results. If
we have a fair goal, we accomplish fair results, and if we have a poor goal, we accomplish poor results. The
world will give you back what you expect, so expect the very best. Don't be defensive or doubtful. Nothing
changes unless you do. Before you can do something, you've got to be something. Know that you have worth
and value. Show that to the world.
Treat everyone you come in contact with as the most important person in life. It will build self-esteem (自
尊心). Smile! You'll be rewarded with a returned smile. Don't react to others rudely. Forgive everyone who
ever hurt you. Then, forgive yourself. Keep yourself healthy. Exercise. Eat a proper diet. Display an attitude
of confidence.
Develop these good habits and your expectancy will be rewarded by successes. This attitude will put you
into that group of people who are truly successful, because you will know and understand how an expectant
attitude enhances (提高) every aspect of your life.

A. building self-esteem is important
B. we should treat everyone else fairly

4. The author's purpose of writing the text is to _____.

Your schooldays should be some of the best and happiest days of your life. How can you gain the most
from them, and ensure you do not waste this wonderful opportunity to learn.
     (1) Be positive about school! Don't say things are difficult or boring. Be interested in school-life and your
school subjects. Join in lots of activities. Be quick to put your hand up. Go round the school with a big smile.
     (2) Expect to work. School is not a holiday camp. If you are not working, you are not learning, and you
are wasting your time at school. Teachers cannot make everything enjoyable.
     (3) Keep fit. If you do not eat a good breakfast, you will be thinking about food in class. If you go to bed
late and do not have enough sleep, you will be sleepy in class. Play some sports to keep your body strong.
     (4) ______. Do not say you will do things tomorrow. If you get behind the class, it is very difficult to get
back in front. You cannot finish a race if you rest all the time.
     (5) Don't be too disappointed if things sometimes go badly. Everyone fails some tests, loses some matches
and has bad days. Friends are not always perfect, and they sometimes say and do unpleasant things. Don't let
small problems seem very big and important.
     (6) Talk about problems-sometimes they are only the result of misunderstanding. Don't be too embarrassed
to ask for help. You are young. No one thinks you can do everything!
     (7) Plan your time. Don't waste life lying in bed on Saturday morning. Go and play a sport, learn the piano,
work on a project, read a book, practise English, or help someone with problems. There are always a lot of
things to do.
     (8) Set targets. If your last grade was a D, work for a C. Try to make progress bit by bit. Think of small
targets:"I will speak in class four times this week", "I will finish my project on Wednesday" or "I will get two
more marks this week".
Follow my advice, and have a happy school-life!

Centuries ago, many houses in a bad state in London were torn down to make way for new streets.
However, the construction project was put off for quite some time, and the foundations of the houses
pulled down were left in the open.
One day, a team of scientists arrived, only to discover that, on the patches of the foundations blocked
from sunlight for years, was growing wild plants, dotted with little flowers. Puzzlingly, some species
were native to Mediterranean countries only.
Most of the destroyed houses had been built during the Roman invasion. Weighed down by piles of
bricks and stones year after year, the seeds possibly brought here in Roman times had almost no hope
for survival. However, once bathed in the sun, they came alive.
The little seeds were so fragile yet so persevering. Though bricks piled on them many years, they
still remained alive. Once exposed to sunshine and rain, they immediately exhibited signs of life. A little
seed, lying underground for hundreds of years, still cherished the hope to live on. But what if a man is
stuck in a similar situation?
One year, a British expedition was marching through the boundless Sahara sands. With the sun
hanging overhead, hot waves of sandy winds were blowing against their faces like hot iron grains. The
men were suffering both thirst and anxiety. The last drop of water was gone. Just then, the captain
brought out a water bottle, saying, "There is still one bottle of water left. However, no one is to drink
any before going out of the desert."
The bottle of water lent them confidence to get through the desert, and embodied their hope to live
on. It was handed down the line of people. This changed into firmness the despair registered on the
men's faces.
Finally the men walked out of the desert, shaking off the threat of death. Tears out of joy
welled out, and trembling hands were trying to screw off the bottle cap and let out the water, which
had supported them spiritually. Now, however, it was sand pouring out-a bottleful of sand!
Was it a bottle of sand that rescued them from the burning sun and the boundless desert? No, it was
their firm faith, like a seed that had taken root in their hearts and that finally let them out of the awful
desert.
1. What made the team of scientists confused according to the passage?
A. Some wild plants on the patches of the foundations.
B. Some foundations of many old houses.
C. Many houses in a poor state.
D. Some little seeds.
2. When the British expedition was marching through the Sahara, _____.
A. they had one bottle of water left
B. they had the last drop of water
C. the weather was anything but tolerable
D. the experienced thirst, anxiety and hunger
3. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 6 probably means _____.
A. the bottle of water changed the firmness on the men's faces into despair
B. the bottle of water transformed the men's desperation into confidence
C. feeling heavy made the men strong rather than weak
D. feeling heavy changed the men's hope into disappointment
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Telling a lie is sometimes necessary.
B. Man can overcome any difficulty whatever it is.
C. A man can do no more than he can.
D. Where there is a seed, there is a hope.

Most people who travel from China to the US find that, despite having studied English for years, they
have to "re-learn" it   1   arriving.
Words that we learned in English classes are not   2   the same way here. To truly be part of the "melting

When I first came to the US for graduate school, I was a   4   foreigner. I felt so out of place that I wanted

This is a dangerous world we live in. The number of murders goes up every year, people are dying of
cancer, more people contract (感染) HIV, more teens are using drugs, etc. You know this because you've
heard all the statistics on the news and in the paper. But do you really have an accurate idea what they mean?
The numbers are going up, but how do they compare to the growth in population? Are more cases of' these
diseases being reported because of better testing techniques, or are the diseases more common? The fact is
that without knowing the background statistics mean very little.
This growing trend of reporting only part of the information is becoming dangerous. For example, several
years ago a high school student reported the dangers of the chemical known as dihydrogen monoxide. This
chemical, found in most cancerous tumors (腫瘤), is often found in the blood of people drunk on alcohol, and
causes complete physical and mental dependence for those who take the chemical even once. After reading his
report, more than 75% of his Advanced Placement Chemistry class voted to forbid this dangerous chemical!
Every one of the above statements is true, yet this chemical is necessary to all life on earth. The students made
the mistake because they voted knowing only a few statements and statistics, rather than the chemical's full
background.
The point of this article is that one should be aware of what is and is not being said. When one finds a new
fact or number, one should try to consider other important information before forming an opinion with only
half-truths. Always remember that the author is trying to convince you of his or her own view, and will leave
out information that is different to his view. For example, look again at the statistics that suggest skiing is safe.
Only 32 people may die each year when skiing, while 897 die from lightning strikes, but which is really the
most dangerous? If you think about it, you realize far fewer people go skiing each year than the number of
people who are in danger of a lightening strike. When you think about it, skiing is more dangerous than you
might at first think when looking at statistics. If we teenagers are to be left in this world, we had better be able
to think critically, and form our own views, rather than be easily persuaded by another's. To be warned is to
be prepared.
1. In the first paragraph, what problem does the writer want to warn us?
A. We are now living in a dangerous world.
B. We get a lot of false statistics from the media.
C. There are around us more and more murders, diseases etc.
D. Statistics alone without full background doesn't give us an accurate picture of things.
2. Why does the writer use the example in the second paragraph?
A. To show the danger of reporting only part of the information.
B. To argue that high school students are easily persuaded.
C. To prove what is necessary to us might be dangerous.
D. To warn us of the harmful substance around us.
3. Relative information is often left out because ____.
A. relative information is not that important
B. the author is trying to show what he or she says is true
C. too much information will make readers feel confused
D. readers are not able to analyze so much information at once
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Some measures must be taken to protect our dangerous world.
B. We should learn to think critically and look at problems from all sides.
C. The growing trend of reporting only half-truths is getting out of control.
D. Teenagers ought to improve their ability of telling right from wrong.

In a world where comparisons happen non-stop, it is difficult to look outside yourself and to ever be
content with who you are. There's always someone who's a bit better. The only solution is to reach inside
and measure against what Warren Buffett calls your own inner yardstick. There is no more accurate measure
for comparison than who you were yesterday, last week or last decade, when you were at your best.
Nothing useful ever comes from comparison to others. Either you see yourself as better than someone
and you get lazy, or you see someone else as better than you and you feel like all your hard work is for nothing.
It is a fool's game. None of us are inherently above or below the person next to us. We are who we are. Not
one of us is exactly alike. The only direct and honest comparison is within yourself. Everything else is apples
to oranges.
My opinion is that you are only allowed to compare yourself to someone else if their life situation is the
same as your own. Good luck finding that match. And one thing is for sure. No matter how hard you work
and how dedicated you are, there will always be someone who can run a little faster, jump a little higher, score
a little better or look a little nicer m a swimsuit. And if there's not, you can bet someone is coming up fast
behind you. So how can you always win in life? Become your best competitor.
The following are the reasons why you are your own best competitor.
     1. You will always be motivated.
Having an image of your most recent past limits is the perfect thing to push you to the next level. If you
ran 7 flights of stairs yesterday, then do 8 today. Who cares if the guy next to you did 15? It doesn't make a
bit of difference. You are a more fit person today than you were yesterday. Your own progress is all you need.
     2. You will continuously be your personal best.
