I'm a skeptic (懷疑論者) when it comes to the benefits of taking vitamins and other supplements. We
swallow far more than any other country- yet we're not the healthiest folks by far, nor do we live the longest.
There's more bad news for vitamins this week: Turns out that taking folic acid (葉酸) and vitamin B12
supplements doesn't prevent heart attacks or death, according to a major new study in the Journal of the
American Medical Association. It was hoped they would, since the vitamins do reduce levels of homocysteine (高半胱氨酸), an amino acid (氨基酸) that is higher in the blood of people who have a higher risk of heart
disease. In fact, homocysteine was reduced 30 percent after one year of treatment in the participants who
took both vitamins. But in the following three years, just as many vitamin takers died as those who didn't take
the vitamins. Even worse, the study was stopped early because another similar study suggested that there may
be an increased risk of cancer from taking B vitamins.
I had been taking a health-food store monster multivitamin (綜合維生素劑) for months. Coincidentally, I
had been experiencing some strange numbness in my legs that was starting to scare me. I remember sitting in
a long meeting with my ankles crossed, and when I tried to stand up I crumpled on the floor and hit my chin
on the glass coffee table because my leg had gone completely numb and worthless. As I sat there and shook
my leg, I got that"pins and needles" feeling and soon was OK. But it scared me enough to make an appointment with a neurologist, who suggested an MRI to rule out stroke, or a brain tumor(腫).
While I'll never know for sure if the vitamins caused my problem, many, many studies have reminded us
that pill forms of vitamins and minerals don't provide the same benefit as getting them from food. There's a lot
we don't know about how the human body works. Until we know more, I'm getting most of my vitamins from
the farmer's market.
1. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. The writer is getting most of pill forms of vitamins from the markets.
B. The writer continues to take vitamins in great quantities.
C. The writer is getting vitamins from food, which can provide more benefits.
D. The writer will never take pill forms of vitamins and minerals.
2. Why do people take folic acid and vitamin B12 supplements?
A. They want to stop heart attacks or live longer.
B. They want to live longer.
C. They want to increase risk of cancer.
D. They want to experience some strange numbness.
3. Which of the following is not true according to the passage?
A. It was the multivitamin he took that caused the writer to get the "pins and needles" feeling.
B. Taking more vitamins will not make a man healthier or live longer.
C. The vitamins can reduce levels of homocysteine in our body.
D. The less homocysteine in our blood, the less chance we'll have heart attacks.
4. The best title of the passage can be ______.
A. Vitamins: Benefit Us a Lot
B. Vitamins: No Help for Your Heart
C. Vitamins: Bad for the Brain, Too
D. Some Bad News About Vitamins.

In the US and Britain, the slogan around colleges was "Save water. Shower with a friend." Now, Wuhan
University has come up with another system for the campus bathhouse. It charges students for the amount
of time in a shower. Before entering the bathhouse, students pay for the amount of time they want in the
shower with cash or their student ID card. The clock starts ticking the minute the tape is turned on. It pauses
when a button is pressed for soap. An integrated circuit (IC) card reader at each tap shows the time. No
money, no water. The benefits of the new system can be seen with the old system, which charged Yuan for
each person regardless of time in the shower. The university used about 320 tons of water daily under the old
system, but only 60 tons now.
Many students use the new system but opinions on it are divided. Some students say it is bad because
bathing had become a sort of race. Many people using it for the first time are not sure how long they need to
shower. Some might be embarrassed if their time is up and they're still covered in soap. They have to ask the
bathhouse worker to help them buy extra time.
"It's a flaw in the system that you can not buy extra time on the ID card," said Ren, a freshman in Wuhan
University. The university is also considering some students' suggestions that they be allowed to pay after
they've finished the shower. Not surprisingly, some are complaining about losing the hour shower. But many
students say the move helps them develop a water-saving sense.
Without the time limits, most students tended to shower for 30 to an hour in the bathhouse.
Some even used the hot water to wash their clothes."In my experience, 0-20 minutes is enough," said Dai
Zhihua, a third-year student who usually takes 8 minutes.
A similar system has been installed in other universities. Shanghai Normal University introduced it at its
Fengxiang Campus in September. The bathing fee there is 0.2 Yuan per minute. One male student responded
by setting a record with a two-minute shower.

1. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A. Students pay for the amount of time they want in the shower.
B. The clock times all through while the student is bathing except when the bather paused for soap.
C. If money runs out, there will be no water.
D. Having finished bathing, the student has to pay for it.
2. The underline word "flaw" (Paragraph 3) most probably means ______.
A. fault
B. advantage
C. pity
D. perfection
3. Since the new system has performed, ______ of water can be saved.
A. a quarter
B. one third
C. one half
D. two thirds
4. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.
A. The new operation can raise students' environmental awareness.
B. the new operation can solve the water crisis.
C. a similar operation has been set in other universities.
D. The university has saved a lot of water by using the new system.
5. In which column can you find this passage?

As the population of the planet increases, so does the number of homes, businesses, parking lots, schools,
airports and roadways. All these structures use electricity and need to be lighted. Humans demand these lights.
They want their homes more comfortable and they want their streets sage. The problem is that researchers are
finding that all the light is having a negative effect on humans and wildlife as well.
Less than 10 years ago I drove to a thinly populated section of my town, lay down in the middle of the road
and watched an attracted meteor shower (流星雨). The area was short of homes, street lights and traffic. If I
did that today, I wouldn't be able to see the meteor shower as well, and I would surely be run over by a car.
Nowadays scientists are finding light pollution can be almost as bad as carbon dioxide pollution. If you've
ever taken a flight at night, the view is beautiful, but you must remember that all the light you see is wasted
electricity. The crew of the space shuttles see an even bigger picture of how extensive the wasted electricity
is worldwide.
Additionally, electricity needs to be generated, and the generation of electricity creates pollution by giving
off greenhouse gases. This affects the air we breathe and our quality of life.
Scientists are also studying the effects of light pollution on wildlife. Thousands of birds die each year when
they crash into highly lighted buildings, as they become puzzled by the light. It has been long known that tiny
sea turtle hatchlings become lost and follow lights on the shore instead of heading towards the sea.
Fortunately, light pollution is one of the easiest sources of pollution that can be corrected without a negative
effect. Following some guidelines and a little searching on Google can give you many ideas on how to reduce
your contribution to light pollution.
1. The author tells the story in the second paragraph mainly to _____.
A. remember the past beauty of the town.
B. stress the advantages of less pollution
C. show the great changes of the town
D. prove the bad effects of light pollution
2. In the passage the author advises people ______.
A. to try to reduce unnecessary light.
B. not to ignore the beauty around.
C. to set proper light for animals
D. not to destroy the animal's living conditions.
3. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Light pollution is difficult to deal with.
B. Light pollution is a threat to some animals.
C. Light pollution has nothing to do with global warming
D. Astronauts can't see clearly in space due to light pollution.
4. What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph which follows the last paragraph?
A. The author's contribution to light pollution
B. Other sources of light pollution
C. Ways of reducing light pollution
D. More bad effects of light pollution

Celia was shocked. She had always been in good shape during high school, but now, in her first year
of college, she was suddenly ten pounds heavier. "My friends and I often had pizza or ice cream when
we studied late at night," she said, "and I was always drinking Coke to stay awake."
Celia's experience is common. Many students enter college and find it so different that they cannot
deal with changes properly. They're away from their parents and in a new stressful (壓力的) environment.
Pressures (壓力) together with freedom to sleep and eat however they please cause many students to
experience the "Freshman 15": gaining weight suddenly in their freshman year of college.
Most students do not realize that the "Freshman 15" can cause some serious health problems. Of
course, college-age adults are still developing bone mass,so gaining some weight is normal. Sudden weight
gain, however, puts too much strain (負(fù)擔(dān)) on the heart and lungs, resulting in little energy and some
difficult thinking and remembering. In later life, it can lead to heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and possibly
cancer.
The solution to the"Freshman 15" is simple-pay attention to developing good habits! In general:
     ● Eat normal-sized meals at regular times. Eat slowly and enjoy it,so you don't need to go back for more.
     ● Keep only healthy snacks in your room-and don't snack too often!
     ● Control drinking and smoking. Alcohol has a lot of calories, and smoking too much makes exercise
        difficult.

Life insurance isn't fun to buy. It forces you to think about your death: a subject many prefer not to
confront. But there's a single, over-riding reason to buy life insurance: to provide an income for your
dependents should you die. Don't depend solely on an agent to figure your life insurance needs. Rule-of-
thumb estimates such as five or eight times your income are guesses; they may produce too little or too
much insurance. Carry too little insurance and you may not provide a reasonable standard of living for
your family after your death; carry too much and you may not enjoy a reasonable standard of living while
you're alive.
Most people who have life insurance don't have enough. The median (中值) amount of coverage for
all adults with life insurance was only 15,000 pounds in 1984. That's obviously not enough to sustain a
family with young children for very long. Nationwide Insurance found that the married men in its 1984
survey carried an average of about 101,880 pounds in life insurance; they needed about 100,705 pounds
more. Married women carried about 43,516 worth insurance but needed some 98,507 pounds more.
How do you determine the amount of life insurance you would need to maintain your family's current
life-style if the bread-winner died? First, figure, what your family's expenses would be if you died tomorrow.
Then, analyze your assets (財(cái)產(chǎn)) and the sources of income that you can use to cover the expenses.
Finally, subtract the assets from the needs. The result is the amount of additional insurance that you'll need
to buy.
1. The passage intends to tell you ____.
A. life insurance isn't fun to buy
B. life insurance is most important in maintaining your family's current life-style
C. life insurance is the result of amount of additional insurance you'll need to buy
D. how to determine the amount of life insurance you would need
2. Life insurance is not fun to buy because ____.
A. many people prefer not to confront the subject
B. there is a single, over-riding reason
C. it reminds you that you may die one day
D. it forces you to think about your additional expenses
3. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. Estimates such as five or eight times your income are not reliable.
B. These agents may produce too little or too much insurance.
C. You must not rely on agents only to tell you how much life insurance you need.
D. You should believe in either your agent or those empirical (經(jīng)驗(yàn)的) estimates.
4. If you carry too little or too much insurance ____.
A. either you or your family might suffer
B. you may not provide a reasonable standard of living for your family after your death
C. you may not enjoy a reasonable standard of living while you're alive
D. you will know in the end that they are just wild guesses
5. All of the following should be taken into account in determining the amount of your life insurance

A. analyzing your assets and sources of income
B. adding up the ages of your dependents

Have you ever been frustrated (沮喪的) when left talking to yourself after your mobile phone battery
runs out in the middle of a call?
If yes, then here comes some good news. Scientists are now perfecting a way to recharge (充電)
electrical equipment while on the move.
Researchers from the Netherlands, France and Portugal announced last week that they have developed
very thin solar panels (太陽(yáng)能板) that can be put on clothes. They can also be added to furniture and
rooftops. They change light from the sun into electricity.
In about three years, you'll be able to wear a jacket that will recharge your phone as you walk. For
camping fans, the development could lead to a tent which charges batteries all day so you can have light
or music at night.
The basic technology of wearable solar panels is the same as that used for conventional (傳統(tǒng)的) solar
panels. Pairs of sheets of semi-conducting silicon (半導(dǎo)體硅) are linked together to form the panel.
But scientists made them much thinner by using different silicon. At one micro-metre, they are the
same thickness as photographic film.
"This technology will make it easier for people to use clean energy sources," said Gerrit Kroesen, a
physicist in the Netherlands who led the team of scientists.
But the thin panels are not as efficient as the thicker ones. While some solar panels now operate at an
efficiency of about 20 per cent, the new flexible (柔韌的) panels are only 7 per cent efficient. But the
scientists believe that this is worth accepting for a stronger and more useful panel.
But the thinner panel is cheaper. An A4 sized panel put onto the back of a jacket costs less than US$13.
It could charge a cellphone during a summer walk in the countryside. As long as you stay within range of
the transmitting masts (發(fā)射天線) that relay a call to the networks, phones will never again run out of power.
1. What is the meaning of the phrase "on the move" in paragraph 2?
A. Taking a course of action.
B. Going from one place to another.
C. Changing clothes before moving.
D. Changing the mobile phone battery.
2.What is the passage mainly about?
A. A way to recharge electrical equipment.
B. A new kind of chargeable battery.
C. A new type of mobile phone.
D. A use of mobile phones.
3.What is the most important in the development of the technology?
A. Photographic film.
B. Warmer clothes.
C. Furniture and rooftops.
D. Thin flexible solar panels.
4.What is NOT likely to happen in the future?
A. You can listen to music in a campsite using the electricity from sunshine.
B. Your mobile phone battery runs out in the middle of a call.
C. You wear a jacket that will recharge your phone.
D. You can change light from the sun into electricity.
