Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. "I was a clothes addict," he
jokes."I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled." Today
David wears casual clothes-khaki pants and sports shirt-to the office. He hardly ever wears necktie. "I'm
working harder than ever," David says, "and I need to feel comfortable."
More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work in the United
States. The change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies
allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known as "dress-
down Friday" or "casual Friday." "What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has
really become an everyday thing," said business consultant Maisly Jones.
Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that
it's easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code. "A lot of young people don't
want to dress up for work," says the owner of a software company, "so it's hard to hire people if you have a
conservative dress code." Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are
wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of employers
said that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale (士氣). Only 4 percent of employers said
that casual dress has a negative impact on productive. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual
dress code helps them save money. "Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day," one person said.
"For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes."
1. David Smith refers to himself as having been "a clothes addict" because _____.
A. he often wore khaki pants and a sports shirt
B. he couldn't stand a clean appearance
C. he wanted his clothes to look neat all the time
D. he didn't want to spend much money on clothes
2. David Smith wears casual clothes now, because _____.
A. they make him feel at ease when working
B. he cannot afford to buy expensive clothes
C. he looks handsome in casual clothes
D. he no longer works for any company
3. According to this passage, which of the following statements is FALSE?
A. Many employees don't like a conservative dress code.
B. Comfortable clothes make employees more productive.
C. A casual clothes code is welcomed by young employees.
D. All the employers in the US are for casual office wear.
4. According to this passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Company workers started to dress down about twenty years ago.
B. Dress-down has become an everyday phenomenon since the early 990s.
C."Dress-down Friday" was first given as a favor from employers.
D. Many workers want to wear casual clothes to impress people.
5. In this passage, the following advantages of casual office wear are mentioned EXCEPT _____.

The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we've never
been before. But just as in face-to-face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be
followed when online.
The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated. Imagine how
you'd feel if you were in the other person's shoes. For anything you're about to send: ask yourself, "Would
I say this to the person's face?" If the answer is "no", rewrite and reread. Repeat the process till you feel
sure that you'd feel comfortable saying the words to the person's face.
If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能反應(yīng)) is to fire back in the same manner.
But try not to do so. You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages.
If it was caused by disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it.
Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.
If you do decide to tell someone in the chat room about a mistake, point it out politely. At the same time,
if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.
It is not polite such as their age, sex, and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you
are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don't ask such questions.

Lawmakers in the United States have expanded an investigation into the use of location-tracking
systems on mobile devices. The action follows recent reports about the storing of information on the
Apple iPhone. Some people consider location tracking to be a threat to personal privacy and security.
Allan Friedman, the research director, says,"All wireless companies do some location tracking as
part of their networks. This information is usually stored by the companies, not the devices, and there
are laws to protect it. Law enforcement (執(zhí)法) agencies, for example, have to have a fairly high standard
before it can access that data. And the phone company is also prohibited from selling that information.
Now, two researchers report that location tracking information is being stored directly on Apple
devices. They said Apple's newest operating systems gather global positioning system and timestamp
information. The information is stored on the device in a file that is also uploaded (上傳) to any computer
that the device is connected to. The researchers say the information is available to anyone who has access
to the device or computer.
Allan Friedman says,"This raises additional concerns. There's the idea that because it's on my phone
and on my computer, rogue applications (惡意程序) that I pay for or that I'm tricked into downloading
may be able to access this data and somehow misuse it."
Apple says it is "not tracking the location of your iPhone". It is simply keeping a database of Wi-Fi
hotspots and cellphone towers near the user's location. This information is meant to help the iPhone
quickly find its location when needed.
Letters have been sent to some of the leading mobile device developers, including Apple and Google.
The letters asked for more information about their location tracking systems. Allan Friedman calls this
an important start to strengthening privacy laws. He says,"There aren't strong controls over things like
location information, what they are doing with it, how long they are keeping it. And perhaps the most
important question is, is my location data with other facts about me?"
1. Why did American lawmakers investigate the use of location-tracking systems on cell-phones?
A. Because the systems can store users' information
B. Because many users have suffered loss after using them.
C. Because it is thought to threaten users' privacy.
D. Because many reporters have shown the problem of the systems.
2. Allan Friedman believes that _______.
A. wireless companies focus on personal privacy.
B. people are forbidden to get access to private data at will
C. phone companies may sell private information secretly
D. customers may ask wireless companies to locate their tracking
3. What do we know from Paragraph 3?
A. Location tracking information is stored online.
B. Apple's newest operating systems collect all kinds of information.
C. Location tracking information may be uploaded to any iPhone.
D. Apple's newest operating systems may reveal the private information of users.
4. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Apple denies that it tracks the location of users.
B. The researchers may misunderstand the Apple's systems.
C. The global positioning system is to blame for rogue applications.
D. The iPhone can quickly find its location by using its user's information.

If you're into sports, you've seen it happen. You've probably even experienced it: basketball players
shaking hands after four quarters of knocking each other around, tennis players leaping over the net to
shake hands with their opponents (對(duì)手) after a hard-fought match, soccer players exchanging sport
shirts after an intense 90 minutes, even boxers touching gloves at the beginning of each round, then
hugging each other after beating each other into a pulp for 12 rounds. It seems like competitors in every
event, from spelling bees to hockey, behave this way. What's going on?
It's all part of sportsmanship, a great tradition in sports and competition that means playing clean and
handling both victory and defeat with grace, style, and dignity.
What is sportsmanship? Sportsmanship is defined as: playing fair, following the rules of the game,
respecting the judgment of referees and officials, treating opponents with respect.
Some people define good sportsmanship as the "golden rule" of sports-in other words, treating the
people you play with and against as you'd like to be treated yourself. You demonstrate good sportsmanship
when you show respect for yourself, your teammates, and your opponents, for the coaches on both sides,
and for the referees, judges, and other officials.
But sportsmanship isn't just reserved for the people on the field. Cheerleaders and fans also need to be
aware of how they behave during competition. Sportsmanship is a style and an attitude; and it can have a
positive influence on everyone around you.
Learning good sportsmanship means finding that the positive attitude learned on the field carries over
into other areas of life. At school, for example, you're able to appreciate the contributions made by
classmates and know how to work as part of a team to complete a project. You may enjoy more success
at work as well, because a big part of learning good sportsmanship is learning to be respectful of others,
including customers and co-workers.

"In only six days I lost seven pounds of weight."
"Two full inches in the first three days!"
These are the kinds of statements used in magazine, newspaper, radio and television ads, promising new
shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device. The promoters of products say they can
shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles, or in some other way to beauty or desirability.
Often such products are nothing more than money-making things for their promoter. Where they produce
are questionable, and some are dangerous to health.
To understand how these products can be legally promoted to the public, it is necessary to understand
something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug, FDA (Food Drug Administration)
can require proof (證明) under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act that safe and effective before it is put on
the market. But if the product is a device, FDA has no author to require premarketing proof of safety or
effectiveness. If a product already on the marker danger to health, FDA can request the producer or distributor
to remove it from the market voluntarily, or it can take legal action, including seizure (查封) of the product.
One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor, had been sold for
reducing the waistline. The Relaxacisor produced electrical shocks to the customers through contact pads.
FDA took legal action against the distributor to stop the sale of the products to the grounds that it was
dangerous to health and life.
Obviously, most of the devices on the maker have never been the subject of court proceedings (法律訴訟),
and new devices appear continually. Before buying, it is up to the consumer to the safety or effectiveness of
such items.
1. It can be inferred that ads mentioned in the text are _____.

A. The court is in charge of removing dangerous product.
B. New products are more likely to be questionable.
C. The production of a device must be approved by FDA.
D. The promoters usually just care about profits.
3. FDA can ask for the proof of safety and effectiveness of a product _____.
A. if it is a drug
B. if it is a device
C. if its consumers make complaints
D. if its distributors challenge FDA's authority

A. a product which was designed to produce electricity
B. a product whose distributor was involved in a legal case
C. a successful advertisement of a beauty product
D. an example of a quality beauty product

Is bottled water better for you than tap? Or should you choose vitamin-enriched water? Experts say,
skip it all. None of these products is likely to make you any healthier. Below, we look at four major myths
about the benefits of drinking water.   1   Experts say there's an easy way to judge. If you are not thirsty,
your fluid intake is likely "just right"
Myth No 1: Drink eight glasses each day.
Scientists say there's no clear health benefit of drinking so much water a day.   2   "Nobody really
knows," says Dr. Stanley Goldfarb, a kidney expert at the University of Pennsylvania.
Myth No.2: Lots of water equals healthier skin.
The body is already 60 percent water.   3   Adding a few extra glasses of water each day has a limited
effect."It's such a tiny part of what's in the body," says Goldfarb." It's very unlikely that one's getting any
benefit."
     Myth No.3:   4
A more accurate statement may be: Drinking water is a helpful tool for dieters."Water is a great strategy
for dieters because it has no calories," says Madeline Fernstrom of the University of Pittsburgh."So you
can keep your mouth busy without food and get a sense of satisfaction." But water is not magical, she adds.
"Other zero-calorie options such as diet sodas are fine, too."
Myth No. 4: It's easy to get dehydrated (脫水的) during a workout.
Dehydration sets in when a person has lost 2 percent of his or her body weight.   5   "It's also obvious
that individuals in hot, dry climates have an increased need for water," says Goldfarb. "But for a walk in

A. So where does the standard advice come from?
B. But it's unclear whether these changes are clinically significant.
C. So for a 200-pound man, this means losing 4 pounds of water.
D. Drinking extra water leads to weight loss.
E. Drink as much water as you can.
F. So, if you take a 200-pound man, he's 120 pounds of water.
G. But first, how do you know if you're drinking enough water

In this fast-shifting world, there can be no guarantees attached to any particular job. But there is much
that you can do to protect yourself from the change of society, by equipping yourself with the skills to
manage your career more effectively. You need to be a career activist.
If you lost your main source of income tomorrow, could you find a different source to replace it? The
most im-portant thing in protecting yourself now and in the future is ensuring that you have choices. Don't
let yourself be held back by a lack of skill development, or fear of change. Some people have been good
performers in their own or-ganization but discovered that they are stuck. Because they are so closely related
to a particular company or indus-try, their skills are not readily transferred to other jobs.
Don't put all your eggs in one basket. If you limit yourself to one particular area or sector, you limit your
opportuni-ty, too. In a global market place, many jobs come and go quickly as changes in the stock market.
Today's hottest job may not exist tomorrow. If you love computers, then this work represents a great
choice. But don't enter a field just because you think that's where the hot jobs are; even if the job is available,
it may not match well with your own skills and abili-ties. Start with entry of your own strengths and interests,
then see where you may match up best in the job market.
1. How can we ensure that we have choices if we lose the main source of income?
