Good relationships are definitely good sources of happiness in life. We all want happy relationships
but if we do not keep that relationship alive, it can also be one of the most distraught things in life. There
may be no hard and fast rules in making good relationships, as each of us has different preferences and
points of view as to what is a great relationship. The following are some major key players in making
relationships work.
It is often said that building good relationships is all about communication. Good communication
indeed governs a good relationship -- knowing the right thing to say, when to say it, how to say it, and
accepting that some things that are better left unsaid. I personally think communication must be
broadened because relationships involve more decisions to make. From study to work, from money to
entertainment and even in things about yourself or about your friend that you do not know, communication
is essential in these aspects of the relationships.
Of course, being with someone is not saying that you totally agree with him all the time. You and your
friend come from different family backgrounds, raised in different environments so there may be
disagreements here and there. However, it is important in making relationships work to express
disagreements without pushing the relationship to end. Again, good communication and learning to
compromise (妥協(xié)) at times are essential.
As the relationship lasts longer, you may also discover things about you and your friend that you may
not have known before. Therefore, supporting each other on both your "hidden selves" can also make a
good relationship.
Love is an important aspect of building relationships and for me, I always believe that love needs
open communication, respect, support and understanding each other in making relationships work.
1. The underlined word "distraught" in Paragraph 1 probably means ______.
A. helpless
B. surprising

2. To communicate well with people, you should know that ______.
A. supporting each other in anything helps build a good relationship
B. a white lie is necessary sometimes
C. compromises are essential at any time
D. your friends need to have the same backgrounds with you
3. According to the text, which of the following are important for a good relationship?

When you see geese flying along in V formation, you might consider what science has discovered
as to why they fly that way.
As each bird flaps wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in V
formation, the whole flock at least 71 per cent greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own.
Individuals who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more
quickly and easily because they are travelling on the pushing force of one another.
When a god se falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone,
and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front. If we
have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those people who are headed the same
way we are.
When the head goose gets tired, it moves back in the formation and another goose flies point. It is
sensible to take turns doing demanding jobs, whether with people or with geese flying south.
Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. What messages do
we give when we honk from behind?
Finally -and this is important -when a goose gets sick or is wounded by gunshot, and falls out of
formation, two other geese fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection.
They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or until it dies, and only then do they launch out on
their own, or with another formation, to catch up with their group.
If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by each other like that.
1. By flying in "V" formation, a goose can ______.
A. learn who leads the group
B. see the direction ahead clearly
C. fly at a higher speed and reach a further place
D. greatly reduce the risk of being hit by gunshots
2. What does the underlined word "honk" mean?
A. To fly.
B. To move.
C. To cry.
D. To fight.
3. Which of the following is NOT suggested in the text?
A. We should be united as one to achieve a common goal.
B. We should work together with those who share our dream.
C. We should take our share of responsibility in a huge task.
D. We should encourage those falling behind to keep on trying.
4. What's the main purpose of the text?
A. To encourage us to learn from geese.
B. To announce some new findings about geese.
C. To prove the similarities between humans and geese.
D. To persuade us to find more about life of geese.

Among the dead in South Asia's tsunami were many tourists at Sri Lanka's national wildlife park at
Yala. But very few of the park's animals - elephants, buffaloes, monkeys and wild cats -appear to have
died. There are theories that animals can sense natural disasters and flee to safety. First, it s possible that
the animals may have heard the quake before the tsunami hit. The underwater rupture likely produced
sound waves known as infrasound (次聲) or infrasonic sound. Humans can't hear infrasound, but many
animals including dogs, elephants, tigers and pigeons can. A second early warning sign the animals might
have sensed is ground vibration (振動). The massive quake would have produced vibrational waves
known as Rayleigh waves. These vibrations move through the ground like waves move on the surface
of the ocean but faster.   They travel at ten times the speed of sound. The Rayleigh waves would have
reached Sri Lanka hours before the water hit. Mammals, birds, insects and spiders can sense Rayleigh
waves. So the animals at Yala might have felt the Rayleigh waves and then run to higher ground. But
what about humans? While we can't hear infrasound, we can feel it, although we don't necessarily
know we're feeling it. We also experience Rayleigh waves by special sensors in our joints, which exist
just for that purpose. Sadly, it seems we don't pay attention to the information when we get it. Maybe
we screen it out because there's so much going on before our eyes and in our ears. Humans have a lot
of things on our minds and usually that works out OK.
1. Why did few animals at Yala die when the tsunamis that caused a huge number of human deaths hit?
A. Because the animals were staying at a higher place in the park.
B. Because the animals were able to run much faster than human beings.
C. Because human beings cannot hear the infrasonic sound.
D. Because the animals might have picked up the danger signals and ran away.
2. Which of the statements about "Ravleigh waves" is true?
A. Rayleigh waves are massive vibrational waves that usually cause quakes or tsunamis.
B. Rayleigh waves move on the ocean surface at a speed ten times that of sound waves.
C. Rayleigh waves can be felt both by animals and human beings.
D. Rayleigh waves, just like infrasonic sound, can only be felt by animals.
3. When a tsunami hits, it is possible that ______.
A. we can't feel the infrasound so we can't be informed of the danger
B. we can feel Rayleigh waves as well as infrasound so we are able to escape the danger like animals
C. we were so busy with things on our minds that we feel neither infrasound nor Rayleigh waves
D. we think nothing of the information of its coming even though we can also get it
4. What does the underlined word "that" in the last sentence refer to?
A. Screening out the information.
B. There being so much going on before our eyes and in our ears.
C. Having a lot of things on our minds.
D. Paying attention to the information.

注意:每個空格只填1個單詞。
I used to be tile messiest person alive. Over the years, through watching others and by trial and error,
I have finally found ways to come up with plans, organize them and follow through with them.
Make an outline of everything you need to have and do to make your plan happen. Make a list of all
of the steps that need to be accomplished and think about what needs to be done.
Detail everything thoroughly and read over it so you can start coming up with some mental solutions
of how to carry out your plans.
You should ensure that if for some reason way one doesn't work, you have way two and way three to
lean back on. Therefore, different ways are needed at hand. It's just a matter of being organized. Chances
are that there is always more than one way of doing things, and chances are that if one of those ways doesn't work, one of the other ones will.
Committing yourself to finishing at least part if not all of your plan at once is also necessary. It will show
that you not only have initiative to get things rolling, but that you are interested in the results obtained with
making the move to get everything done.
If you make a commitment to finish before a specific time, make sure that you carry that out, and be
sure to do everything in the way you said you would, within the time-frame you set for yourself.
Don't try to tackle more things all at a time. All that does is delay your progress, distract you and make
you lose your interest, motivation and energy.
Carrying out an effective plan requires being as organized as possible. You will only achieve this by
sticking to the order of the plan and not deviating or trying to do more at a time.
Last but not the least, you should never abandon things mid-project. It will only annoy everyone
around you including yourself. Unfinished plans are a waste of time, energy and, in some cases, even
money.
So, don't be afraid of organization. The older we get, the more necessary it becomes to have the skills
necessary to follow through with confidence and to be able to carry through plans in an organized and
manageable way. It pays to be organized, after all.

So you're between the ages of 13 and 24. What makes you happy?
A worried, weary parent might imagine the answer to sound something like this: Sex, drugs, a little
rock 'n' roll (搖滾樂). Maybe some cash, or at least the car keys.
It turns out the real answer is quite different. Spending time with family is the top answer to that
open-ended question, according to an extensive survey-more than 100 questions asked of 1,280
people ages 13-24 - conducted by The Associated Press and MTV on the nature of happiness
among America's young people.
Next is spending time with friends, followed by time with a significant other. And even better for
parents: Nearly three quarters of young people say their relationship with their parents makes them
happy.
"They're my foundation," says Kristiana St.John, 17, a high-school student from Queens in New
York. "My mom tells me that even if I do something stupid, she's still going to love me no matter what.
Just knowing that makes me feel very happy and blessed."
You might think money would be clearly tied to a general sense of happiness. But almost no one
says "money" when asked what makes them happy, though people with the highest family incomes are
generally happier with life. However, having highly educated parents is a stronger predictor of happiness
than income.
From the body to the soul: Close to half say religion and spirituality are very important. And more
than half say they believe there is a higher power that has an influence over things that make them happy.
Beyond religion, simply belonging to an organized religious group makes people happier.
And parents, here's some more for you: Most young people in school say it makes them happy.
Overwhelmingly (壓倒性地), young people think marriage would make them happy and want to be
married some day. Most also want to have kids.
Finally, when asked to name their heroes, nearly half of respondents mentioned one or both of their
parents. The winner, by a nose: Mom.
1. In America, it is essential that young people should____..
A. make some money
B. enjoy rock'n'roll

2.  What Kristiana St.John says shows that____.
A. her mother is clever as other mothers

3. To a general sense of happiness, the survey indicates____.
A. money is the most concerned.

It was a long process that involved creating a resume, submitting an online application (申請) and
attending a round of interviews. Naturally Tan Kaiyin, a 21-year-old student is excited when she was
selected, as more than 660, 000 people signed up to volunteer at the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou,
but only less than 10 percent were finally chosen to work in the venues and wear the white and green
sport uniforms.
Like in any major sporting event, volunteers play a vital role in assisting with operations and Tan's
function here is not any different. She is based at the Garden Hotel and is tasked with helping guests and
officials who have issues with their accreditation cards (注冊卡). "I deal with guests from all over the
world, I have never met so many international people and it is very, very exciting to have this opportunity
to interact with them. They come to the office because they need to make a change in their accreditation
card and usually they are in a hurry, so we try our best to get it done quickly."
She admits the first few days involved extremely long hours, however she likes the challenge as it
gives her an immense sense of satisfaction especially when an irate guest turns a frown into a smile and
says "thank you".
Tan deals with people from different cultures and personalities and feels she has learned so much in
the past week, an experience that she would have never gotten if not for the Guangzhou Asian Games,
therefore she is very happy and grateful for being a part of this. She also has kind words for her
managers and fellow colleagues and says the hard work and positive atmosphere has bonded them into
a family. She enjoys her responsibilities so much that she is afraid of feeling lost when the Games finally
end on Nov. 27.
However, she is aware of all the positive effects the Games have had on Guangzhou. From
improvements to air and water quality to better transportation and infrastructure in the city, but most
importantly to her is the fact that the Asian Games has placed Guangzhou prominently onto the world
map. This, she believes, will encourage people from all over the world to continue visiting her city, and
this in turn will give the residents of Guangzhou a fantastic opportunity to continue learning about different
cultures. The official Asian Games Volunteer Slogan is, "Together, we can make it better!" Indeed it
seems they can.
