For a long time being happy was considered something that just happened, and there was nothing
special to do about it. Now we know that getting along with ourselves and with other people is
something that we can work at. It is possible to act in such a way that other people will like us better.
One way is being unselfish, not wanting everything our own way or demanding the best share of
everything, including the attention of our friends. Another way is to look for good points, not bad ones
in other people. It is surprising how successful this treasure hunt can be.
You don't have to be spineless (懦弱) in order to be popular. In fact, you will be liked and respected
if you are not afraid to stand up for your rights.  But do it politely and pleasantly. Being friendly and
polite to your own group, to older people, to strangers and especially to those who do not look
important or do not interest you is one way to develop a good character.
You cannot expect to be perfect, and so you must learn not to be too unhappy when you make
a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes, and no one is to be blamed unless he refuses to learn from them.
Many young people become discouraged when they recognize in themselves qualities that they do not
like-selfishness, laziness and other unpleasant qualities. Just remember that we all have some of these
faults and have to fight against them.
At the same time, it is important to remember that, while you are probably no worse than others,
chances are that you are not much better, either. The surest way to be happy is to think yourself above
other people.
When something is wrong, it is good sense to try to make it right. Perhaps you don't like a teache
r or a classmate .Try to see why, and look at yourself, too, to be sure that you are not doing something
to make that person dislike you. In time, things may turn out all right if you just keep trying to be pleasant
and polite. If things do not turn out all right, then you will simply have to get along the best you can with
the situation, without thinking too much about it. Worrying never helps in a situation you can't change.
1. One of the two ways the author suggested for us to get along well with others is ____.
A.to draw the attention of our friends
B.to demand the best share of everything
C.to look for treasure in order to be successful
D.to pay more attention to other people's strong points
2. The passage shows that there is no perfect person but someone should be blamed if he ____.
A.makes a big mistakeKs5u
B.is selfish and lazy
C.does not draw a lesson from his own fault
D.is very unhappy about his unpleasant quality
3. The passage implies that in order to be a happy person, one should consider oneself ____.
A.no better than others
B.not the same as others
C.as having something better than others
D.as having better chances than others
4. The purpose for the writer to write the passage is to _____.
A.train you to be perfect
B.show you the way to be happy
C.tell you how to act when you dislike a person
D.teach you how to be popular among your friends

Do you remember the game "Telephone"? A message gets passed from person to person, and everyone
laughs at how distorted (曲解) it becomes. As a game, telephone can be fun. In real life, sending messages
through third parties fouls things up. It is important for family members who have "business" with other
family members to take it up directly.
When tension arises in a relationship between two people, a frequent way of dealing with this is to send
messages through a third person. Family doctors refer to the process as triangulation. Following a quarrel,
a mother may say to her son, "Tell your father to pass the salt," which may be answered by, "Tell your
mother to get her own salt." In many long cases of triangulation, the middleman becomes severely disturbed.
Two years ago, Ruth and Ralph Gordon brought their 17-year-old daughter for treatment. Lucille was
not doing well in school, using drugs heavily. When I began to work with her, she was uncommunicative
and aggressive. After some time, however, she opened up and told me her parents rarely talked to each other,
but both used her as a middleman. Mrs. Cordon was sexually unsatisfied and suggested to Lucille that she
ask her father to go for marriage advice. Mr. Cordon told Lucille that he was seeing another woman, and he
urged Lucille to speak to her mother about improving her behaviour. Caught in this confusing situation, Lucille
became more and more troubled. It wasn't until she refused to play middleman that she began to improve.
When either parent began to send a message through her, she learned to say, "Tell him/her yourself!"
You'll find that when family members learn to dial each other directly, there's rarely a busy signal or wrong
number. With direct dialing, a sense of freshness is created.
1. The underlined words "fouls things up" in the 1st paragraph means, ____.
A. create things
B. improve things
C. remove things
D. ruins things
2. "triangulation" in the second sentence of the 2nd paragraph refers to ____.
A. the process of sending messages through a 3rd person
B. the middleman who becomes severely disturbed
C. the tension in a relationship between two people
D. the argument between a mother and a father
3. Through the example of Lucille and her parents, the writer hopes to tell the readers that ____.
A. family members should learn to get their messages across directly
B. parents should send their children taking drugs for treatment
C. children can hardly get used to their parents' troubles
D. children should refuse the requests of their parents

It happened to me recently that I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack
Obama's Dreams from My Father and how it had changed my views of the current US president.
The person I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, "a wonderfully written book".
However, he then proceeded to talk about Mr Obama in a way that suggested he had no idea of his
background at all.I sensed that I was talking to a book liar.
And it seems that he is not the only one.Clearly two thirds of people have lied about reading a book
which they haven't.In the World Book Day survey, Dreams from My Father is at number 9.The survey
lists top ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading. As I'm not one to lie too
often, I'll admit here and now that I haven't read the entire ten books. But I am pleased to say that I have
read the book at number one, George Orwell's 1984.I think it's absolutely outstanding.
Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to impress someone they were speaking to.This
could be difficult if the conversation became more indepth!
The World Book Day survey also has some other interesting information in it.It shows that many
people lie about having read classical works by Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, Charles Dickens and
so on.But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, they named J. K.Rowling, Jilly Cooper, and
Stephen King (ah, the big sellers, in other words). Fortyone percent of people asked admitted they
turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story.
So which books have you lied about reading-if any-and which is your favourite?

Singing songs is fun, but is it also useful? For learning English pronunciation, Mr. Joe thinks songs are
the most useful way to learn. At the same time, you can learn some new words and phrases while singing
songs. Mr. Joe has used songs to help himself learn French, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese. You should do

Some vocabulary used in songs is not everyday English, so you have to be careful how you use song
lyrics when you speak. Most words and sentences, though, are very useful. You don't have to sing songs

Are morning people born or made? In my case it was definitely made. In my early 20s, I rarely went to
bed before midnight, and I would almost always get up late the next moming.
But after a while I couldn't ignore the high relationship between success and rising early. On those rare
occasions where I did get up early, I noticed that my productivity was almost always higher. So I set out
to become a habitual early riser. But whenever my alarm went off, my first thought was always to stop that
noise and go back to sleep. Eventually some sleep research showed me that I was using the wrong strategy.
The most common wrong strategy is this: You assume that if you're going to get up earlier, you'd better
go to bed earlier. It sounds very reasonable, but will usually fail.
There are two main schools (流派) of thought on sleep patterns. One is that you should go to bed and get
up at the same time every day. The second says you should go to bed when you're tired and get up when you
naturally wake up. However, I have found both of them are wrong if you care about productivity.
If you sleep at set hours, you'll sometimes go to bed when you aren't sleepy enough. You're wasting time
lying in bed awake and not being asleep. If your sleep is based on what your body tells you, you'll probably
be sleeping more than you need. Also, your mornings may be less predictable if you're getting up at different
times.
The solution for me has been to combine both methods. I go to bed when I'm sleepy and get up with an
alarm clock at a fixed time. So I always get up at the same time (in my case 5 a.m.), but I go to bed at
different times every night-sometimes at 9:30 p.m. and other times at midnight. Most of the time I go to bed
between 10-11 p.m.
However, going to bed only when I'm sleepy, and getting up at a fixed time every morning is my way. If
you want to become an early riser, you can try your own.
1. According to the passage, the underlined phrase refers to _____.
[     ]
A. people who stay up until the next morning
B. people who get up early in the morning
C. people who feel sleepy in the morning
D. people whose productivity is the highest in the morning

[     ]
A. Because he/she wanted to form the habit of going to bed early and getting up early.
B. Because he/she had found that his/her productivity was higher when he/she got up early.
C. Because he/she wanted to see which of the two main schools of thought on sleep pattems was right.
D. Because he/she was told the high relationship between success and rising early.

[     ]
A. going to bed after midnight
B. getting up early occasionally
C. pressing off the alarm to go on sleeping

Attempt a guess at the following question: In the English-speaking world, which country has the least
affordable homes? You are wrong if you guessed the US, even with the housing bubble (氣泡) and main
sadness.  Nor is it the UK, where prices have risen because demand is far from supply.  According to a
recent survey of 227 cities around the globe, you must go south of the equator (赤道) to Australia to find
the priciest homes.
The report measured a city's housing market along the following guidelines.  An "affordable" home
required three times or less of the average family's income to purchase.  At four times earnings, a home fell into the "unaffordable" category.  And a "seriously unaffordable" home needed five times a family's income.  In Australia, homes in the least affordable city cost just about 9. 5 times the average income.  Sydney,
Perth, and Melbourne were only a little under this figure.
Australian officials offered little comment, apart from a general statement on the dismal findings.  These prices make the possibility that many Australians will one day own a home largely unbelievable.  Land
rationing (配給制) and excessive development charges have raised prices, and the problem will only be
solved through urgent action by the Rudd government.
Some American cities were also included on the least affordable list, four of which were in California.  America is still involved in a mortgage(抵押)crisis, though, affecting the affordability of homes.  Yet a
number of US cities garnered "affordable" status, namely Dallas and Kansas.  Australia had no cities listed
in the top fifty places with affordable homes.
The survey suggests that you can find affordable homes in most places, just not if you're Australian and choose to live down under.
1. To buy an affordable house, you should pay _____.
A. 3 times or less of the average family's income
B. 4 times or less of the average family's income
C. 5 times or less of the average family's income
D. 9. 5 times or less of the average family's income
2. What caused the prices of houses to increase in Australia?
A. The rising family's income.
B. The demand over supply.
C. The excessive development charges.
D. The decrease of land.
3. The underlined word "dismal" in Paragraph 3 may mean _____.

C. difficult
D. gloomy
4. What might be the most suitable title for the passage?
A. Affordable Houses
B. A House is a Dream First
