In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing
that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one
person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied (依賴) on how well they
performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs.
In their single-minded pursuit (追求) of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly
forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a
culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame
competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from
their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem
to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: " I may
have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try." What is not usually admitted by themselves is the
belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their
worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are
based on the mistaken belief that one's self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with
others. Both are afraid of not being… Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (緩解)
can we discover a …meaning in competition.
1. What does this passage mainly talk about?
A. Competition helps to set up self-respect.
B. Opinions about competition are different among people.
C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development.
D. Failures are necessary experience in competition.
2. Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?
A. It pushes society forward.
B. It builds up a sense of duty.
C. It improves personal abilities.
D. It encourages individual efforts.
3. The underlined phrase "the most vocal" in Paragraph 3 means ________.
A. those who try their best to win
B. those who value competitionj most highly
C. those who are against competition most strongly
D. those who rely on others most for success
4. What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a "desire to fail"?
 A. One's worth lies in his performance compared with others.
B. One's success in competition needs great efforts.
C. One's achievement is determined by his particular skills.
D. One's success is based on how hard he has tried.
5. Which point of view may the author agree to?
A. Every effort should be paid back.
B. Competition should be encouraged.
C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter.
D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.

Recently, in the hope of earning both money and social experience, I became a door-to-door salesman. I once read a saying: "If somebody wants something of you, you will be treated as warmly as spring, but if they don't you may be treated as coldly as winter." You may consider it an exaggeration(夸張),but if you are a salesman, it is clearly correct.
You would never have found it to be so true if you hadn't been a salesman. You needn't stand doubtful looks and unfriendly views; you needn't listen to something completely wrong and nod to say that it was quite right; you needn't always keep patience and smile; you needn't repeat the same sentences over again; you needn't talk to somebody you dislike.
I did this work for a month; then I decided to give it up. In spite of the above reasons, I found I was paying too much attention to the job and thus sacrificing my study time. The latest test result proved that my grades were getting lower. Even worse, I hadn't enough time to join my classmates in college activities. Sometimes I felt lonely and unhappy because of both my study and my part-time job. Now I don't think it is worth doing such a thing even though I was earning money at great cost.
Newspapers and magazines often publish stories about good students who do part-time work and keep high scores in class. But according to my experience, part-time work can have some strong bad effects on study.
Most students don't see the relationship between studies and work in a correct way. In my opinion, if it isn't a must for money reasons, students should be cautious about taking up a part-time job. In western countries even the children of very rich families take part in hard jobs during the summer vacation.
1. What caused the writer to give up his part-time job?
A. Too much attention to it and his grades getting lower
B. He often missed some college activities
C. Sometimes he felt tired and unhappy
D. All the above
2. Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined word "sacrificing"?
A. losing
B. wasting
C. using
D. getting
3. The writer thought __________.
A. to do part-time job was unnecessary
B. part-time jobs had good effect upon study
C. it's hard to plan study and work correctly
D. part-time jobs were good for students
4. Who should take part-time jobs according to the text above?
A. Every college student
B. Those who want to get study experience
C. Those in great need of money
D. Those from very rich families

London has more than nine million visitors every year. They come and visit some of the most famous
places in England: Big Ben, the Tower of London and the River Thames.
You can see some of the most interesting places in London by getting on the tour buses. Or you can
take a ride on the London Eye. This large wheel slowly takes you 135m above the River Thames.
The River Thames is London's main waterway. It has shaped the capital's landscape, history and
geography. So one of the best ways of knowing more about the city is to take a trip along the river.
The clock tower of the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, has become one of the main symbols of
London. The sound of the bell, which you can hear at the beginning of many television and radio
programmes, has become well-known throughout the nation.
No visit to London is complete without a look at the Tower of London, in the eastern part of the city.
After Big Ben, the Tower may be London's most visited tourist spot. Directly south is Tower Bridge,
which is more than100 years old.
Along all the palaces in London, Buckingham Palace is the most famous. It has been the main London
home of the royal family since Queen Victoria moved there in 1873. You can visit some of the rooms in
August and September. And most mornings of the year you can watch the soldiers outside changing the
guard.
About one hour by train out of London is the Tower of Windsor. Here you can visit another of the
Queen's homes-Windsor Castle. There was a fire in 1992 and many of the rooms were badly burned.
But now they are full of beautiful pictures, tables and chairs again.
Sightseeing in London is great, but it can get very tiring. So, the best way to start the day is to fill up
with an English breakfast.
You can buy an English breakfast in nearly every hotel, and at many restaurants and cafes. An English
pub is a good place to stop for lunch and a drink. You can get hot or cold food and try one of England's
many ales(濃啤酒). Fish and chips are also a traditional English meal. So look out for fish and chip shops
in cities as well as by the sea.
Or you can sit outside one of the many roadside pubs and cafes in London, and simply watch the busy
world go by.
1. We can learn from the text that ____________.
A.Windsor Castle has been rebuilt
B. the Big Ben can be heard everywhere in London
C. only some of the hotels in England serve breakfast.
D. the London Eye can carry you where you like to go
2. Which place may be London's most visited tourist spot?
A. Buckingham Palace
B. The Tower of London
C. Big Ben
D. The River Thames
3. If you go to London in December, you will not be able to ___________.
A. visit Windsor Castle
B. tour the Buckingham Palace
C. tour the city along the River Thames
D. watch the soldiers outside the Buckingham Palace changing guards.
4. The underlined word "landscape" (paragraph 3) is closest in meaning to _________.
A. sights
B. interests
C. characteristics
D. culture
5. The whole passage mainly introduces the ________________.
