JK Rowling, the Harry Potter author, has signed a deal with Little, Brown and Company, to
publish her first ever novel for adults, which is set to become one of the most anticipated (期望的)
book in years.
The deal means that Rowling’s long-standing relationship with Bloomsbury, the London-based
publisher that launched (發(fā)行) the Harry Potter books, has come to an end, at 1east in terms of
new works by the author.
Rowling is keeping her fans guessing about the characters and plot of her new book. She only
said that the new novel will be nothing like the Harry Potter series, which was sold over 30 million
copies in the UK alone. She thought that with the move from children’s to adult fiction, a switch to
a new publisher seemed like a natural and reasonable step.
She said,“Although I’ve enjoyed writing it every bit as much, this book will be very different from
the Harry Potter series. The freedom to explore a new field is a gift that Harry’s success has
brought me.”
Ian Rankin, the Edinburgh-based author whose highly-successful detective novels are also set
in the city, suggested Rowling’s book will be a crime novel.
“Wouldn’t it be funny if JK Rowling’s first novel for adults turned out to be a crime story set
in Edinburgh?”he said.
Industry insiders guessed that the deal is worth more than £5 million and the new book is
expected to come out later this year.
A spokesman said, “JK Rowling’s audience is vast and her position is unique. Harry Potter
books were a global success and her fans are very loyal. Children that were eight, nine, or ten
when the books first came out in the 1990s are now in their 20s. Plenty of adults, loved the books
regardless of whether they had children, so the potential market for her is huge.”
1. What does the text mainly tell us?  ______
A. JK Rowling has signed a deal with a new publisher.

A. has been sold 30 million copies in the UK alone
B. is poorly thought of by the London-based publisher Bloomsbury
C. has nothing in common with the Harry Potter series
D. is expected to bring her more money than the Harry Potter series
3. The author used Ian Rankin’s words in order to    ____
A. tell us that some famous novelists offer to give Rowling some advice
B. show that many readers are curious about Rowling’s new book
C. tell us that many readers prefer to read detective or crime novels
D. prove that a crime story set in Edinburgh is sure to be successful
4. We can learn from the text that   ____
A. Little, Brown and Company is specialized in publishing adult books
B. the author has no doubt about the success of Rowling’s new book
C. JK Rowling will be a crime novelist as good as Ian Rankin
D. it was in Edinburgh that Ian Rankin got to know JK Rowling
5. What the spokesman said in the last paragraph tells us that   ____   .
A. JK Rowling’s fans are so loyal that they don’t care what she will write
B. children won’t have any interest in JK Rowling’s new book
C. Rowling’s vast audience and unique position will guarantee the new book’s succcss

When the Japanese attacked America's ships at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941,they did it
secretly. The makers of the movie Pearl Harbor have behaved differently.
The noise about Pearl Harbor, made by Disney, has reached its highest point with its premiere (首次
公演) before the movie opens in cinemas across the US at the start of the Memorial Day holiday
weekend,a time to recall national heroes who sacrificed their lives on the battlefield.
As Ben Affleck is the main star, the movie seems sure to become a success in the United States at
least.
At almost three hours in length,it promises to be a good old Hollywood movie. There is a love story.Affleck and his co-star,Josh Hartnett, both fall in love with the navy nurse,Kate Beckinsale and,of course, there is much human courage and love of country.
It's certain that Disney will be accused of "changing" history. The showing of actual events in a movie
always causes arguments.
Bits of the story are deliberately not mentioned in the movie. It does not address the theory held by
some historians that President Franklin Roosevelt knew about Japan's intention to attack the ships in
Pearl Harbor. It is said he did nothing,as he was aware that such a blow would allow him to take
America into the Second World War.
Japan remains sensitive about being accused of wartime atrocities (暴行).And Disney is sensitive
about its business in Japan, where it has a theme park.
Not all the reviews of the movie have been full of praise.A reviewer for Newsweek, who was given
an early preview, acknowledged that the 40-minute sequence (連續(xù)鏡頭) showing the attack itself was
powerful. The attack comes quite late in the movie, however, and the reviewer was less impressed with
the characters and the love story.
"Almost every line of the dialogue sounds like it comes from an old movie," the reviewer wrote.

Every day, 340 million people speak it. One billion people are learning it and it is said that by 2050, half
of the world's population will be using it. What are we talking about? That global language-English.
The English language started in Britain in the 5th century. It is a mixed language. It was built up when
German, Scandinavian and French invaders settled in England and created a common language for
communication.
Today it is the official language of the UK, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and
Ireland as well as many islands in the Caribbean Many other countries and regions use it for politics and
business, for example, India, Pakistan, Nigeria and the Philippines. English is also one of the official languages
of Hong Kong.
But global advertising and pop music mean that in most countries, you will see or hear some English.
Thanks to McDonald's, we all know about "burgers", "fries" and "milkshakes". Songs by Madonna, Britney
Spears and Celine Dion are in English. We can sing along, even if we do not understand what we are singing!
English is a messy (雜亂的) language. Every year, dictionaries include new words that talk about popular
culture, for example, computer-related words such as "blogging", "download" and "chat room". Also included
are words that teenagers use. Who does not know "cool", "OK" or "hello"?
Other languages also influence English. Many English words come from French. Words like "cafe" and
expressions like "c'est la vie" (that is life) are all part of the English language. On the other hand, the French
language includes English words like "le weekend" and "le camping". German words are also part of English.
Words like "kindergarten" come from the German language.

language in India.

The trip to the United State opened my eyes to the fact that there are a lot of similarities as well as
differences between American youth and French youth.
The first difference is in appearance. Going around in the U.S., I found that American youth do not
really care about their appearance. In the morning, they choose something in their closet and wear it with
another thing, often of different colors and styles, without wondering whether their choices make them
look strange. The reason behind this is that they don't care what people look like, but are just interested
in their ideas. I think it's great, but it also causes problems. Since they don't care about their appearance,
they don't really care about their weight. Often they get fat without realizing it.
There are differences in relationships too. When the American youth fall in love, they don't really think
of the future. Also, there are differences in the rules concerning behavior that is allowed. In some respects, the French are more accepting. For example, in America it is generally unacceptable to make physical
display of love. Lovers, actually, can't kiss or hold each other everywhere they want. People think that not showing love in public places is a way to respect others. On the contrary, the French youth can do almost everything they want.
As for other types of relationships, there are also big differences. Americans act differently from
French people in front of unknown people. When an American girl, for example, arrives in front of people she has never met before, she will talk with them, trying to create a kind of tie between her and this new
circle of people. The French girls will just think about rather than really do this kind of thing because they
are too shy and lacking in self-confidence.
To finish, I noticed that in American classes, when pupils want to say or ask something, they just do it.  In general, they don't really care how the others will judge them. In France, it's not the same case. If somebody wants to ask something, he/she will think about it before speaking up. I appreciate the freedom in Americans' behavior, ideas, and ways of expressing themselves.
1. The underlined word "respects" in the third paragraph probably means____.
A. approaches
B. aspects
C. honors
D. means
2. When American youth fall in love with each other, they _________.
A. will not hold each other
B. will rarely display their love in public
C. will always think about their future
D. will kiss wherever they like
3. It can be inferred from the passage that French youth may think more about ______.
A. their relationship's future
B. their public images
C. their physical displays
D. their lover's ideas
4. The passage is mainly about the______ between American youth and French youth.
A. differences
B. friendship
C. similarities
D. relationships

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from
the passage.
Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.
Since the earliest civilizations, people have controlled rivers to meet society's demands. Today, rivers
are controlled for many reasons, primarily to maintain reliable water supplies for daily, agricultural and
industrial needs, for power generation, for navigation (航行), and to prevent flooding.
River control is achieved by channelization, a term that covers a range of river engineering works, including
widening, deepening, straightening and stabilization of banks, and by the construction of dams.
An important period of channelization took place in Europe during the 19th century, when many large rivers
were straightened and their beds deepened. One of the most dramatically changed was the Tisza River, a branch
of the Danube that flows through Hungary. The controlling of the Tisza, designed to reduce flooding and make
land for agriculture, included cutting off more than 100 meanders (河曲), shortening the river's length by nearly
400 kilometers.
One of the most common ways in which people control rivers is by damming them. The past 50 years or so
has seen an increase in dam construction worldwide, and at the beginning of the 21st century, there were about
800,000 dams globally, some towering more than 200 meters in height.
Despite their successes, many dams also cause significant environmental changes that prove harmful. Some
particularly deep reservoirs (水庫) can bring about earthquakes due to the stress on their bottom rocks caused
by huge volumes of water. Downstream of a reservoir, the river is certainly influenced in many ways:water
volume, speed and quality are all affected, leading to changes in the landscape and among plants and animals.

Endangered languages are languages that wouldn't exist any longer, much like endangered species of
plants or animals. Languages are considered to be endangered when parents are no longer teaching the l
anguage to their children and are not using it actively in everyday life. A language is considered to nearly
disappear when it is spoken by only a few elderly native speakers.
The world faces enormous challenges in order to protect different kinds of languages. Of the more than 6,912 languages, half may be in danger of disappearing in the next several decades.
It is caused by many reasons: small numbers of speakers, the regular use of other languages, attitudes
towards their languages, moving of the younger population, government policies, and languages used in
education and so on. A language may lack important things such as a body of literature, and people who
read and write it. A language may also lack prestige (聲望) and support of its speakers.
The survival of a language is also threatened when speakers move to other areas where different
languages are spoken, or when government policies improve the use of a specific language in school,
official business and the media. These situations encourage people to learn the wider-known language
and may cause them, especially the young, to stop using their mother tongue. Often those speaking
lesser-known languages will choose to learn a more prestigious language with the hope of greater
economic opportunities. Most of the world's parents are teaching their children English, French, Spanish,
Chinese, Arabic, Russian or some other main languages instead of their own languages for social and
economic reasons.

The word "conservation" has a thrifty meaning. To conserve is to save and protect, to leave what we
ourselves enjoy in such a good condition that others may also share the enjoyment. Our forefathers had
no idea that human population would increase faster than the supplies of raw materials: most of them,
even until very recently, had the foolish idea that the treasures were "limitless" and could "last forever".
Most of the citizens of earlier generations knew little or nothing about the complicated and delicate system
that runs all through nature, and which means that, as in a living body, an unhealthy condition of one part
will sooner or later be harmful to all the others.
Fifty years ago, nature study was not part of the school work; scientific forestry was a new idea; wood was still cheap because it could be brought in any quantity from distant woodlands; soil destruction and
river floods were not national problems; nobody had yet studied long-term climatic cycles in relation to
proper land use; even the word "conservation" had nothing of the meaning that it has for us today.
For the sake of ourselves and those who will come after us, we must now set about correcting the
mistakes of our forefathers. Conservation should be made part of everybody's daily life. To know abou
t the water table in ground is just as important to us as a knowledge of the basic math formulas. We need
to know why all watersheds (上游集水區(qū)) need the protection of plant life and why the running current
of streams and rivers must be made to give their full benefit to the soil before they finally escape to the sea. We need to be taught the duty of planting trees as well as of cutting them. We need to know the
importance of big, grown trees, because living space for most of man's fellow creatures on this planet is
figured not only in square measure of surface but also in cubic (立方體的) volume above the earth
. In a
word, it should be our goal to restore as much of the original beauty of nature as we can.
1.The author's attitude towards the use of natural resources is _________.
A. positive
B. uninterested
C. optimistic
D. critical
2. According to the author, the greatest mistake of our forefathers was that _________.
A. they had no idea about scientific forestry
B. they had little or no sense of environmental protection
C. they were not aware of the importance of nature study
D. they had no idea of how to make good use of raw materials
3.To avoid repeating the mistakes of our forefathers, the author suggests that _________.
A. we plant more trees
B. natural sciences be taught to everybody
C. environmental education be directed toward everyone
D. we return to nature
4. How can you understand the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?
A. Our living space on the earth is getting smaller and smaller.
B. Our living space should be measured in cubic volume.
C. We need to take some measures to protect space.
D. We must preserve good living conditions for both birds and animals.
