As civilization proceeds in the direction of technology, it passes the point of supplying all the basic
essentials of life-food, shelter, clothes and warmth. Then we are faced with a choice between using
technology to provide and fulfill needs which have now been regarded as unnecessary or, on the other
hand, using technology to reduce the number of hours of work which a man must do in order to earn a
given standard of living. In other words, we either raise our standard of living above that necessary for
comfort and happiness or we leave it at this level and work shorter hours.
I shall take it for granted that mankind has, by that time, chosen the latter alternative. Men will be
working shorter and shorter hours in their paid employment. It follows that the housewife will also expect
to be able to have more leisure in her life without lowering her standard of living. It also follows that human domestic servants will have completely ceased to exist. Yet the great majority of the housewives will wish
to be relieved completely from the routine operations of the home such as scrubbing the floors or the bath of the cooker, or washing the clothes or washing up, or dusting or sweeping, or making beds.
By far the most logical step to relieve the housewife of routine is to provide a robot which can be
trained to the requirements of a particular home and can be programmed to carry out half a dozen or more standard operations, when switched by the housewife.
1.As civilization develops in the direction of technology,________.
A. the basic essentials of life must be supplied
B. it is important to supply the basic essentials of life
C. it is no longer so important as it was in the past to supply all the basic essentials of life
D. it is not necessary to supply the basic essentials of life
2. According to the author, we are faced with________.
A. the choice of providing and fulfilling our needs
B. the choice of using technology
C. the choice of earning a standard of living
D. a choice between using technology to provide and fulfill needs to reduce the number of working hours
3. What alternative will mankind have chosen in future?
A. To leave our standard of living at this level and work shorter hours.
B. To raise our standard of living.
C. To fulfill needs which have been regarded as unnecessary.
D. To lower our standard of living and work shorter hours.
4. Now most housewives wish to________.
A. stop doing their housework
B. do more housework to improve their life
C. get rid of the heavy burden of their housework
D. do only simple and light housework
5. It can be inferred that robots will be invented _________.
A. to take the place of housewives
B. to help manage a family
C. to do the routine of housework instead of human
D. to provide the daily necessities for man

An Australian-based scientist announced yesterday he had made a step forward in forensic (用于法
庭的) DNA testing so that an individual can be identified by a single cell.
Ian Findlay, from the Australian Genome Research Facility at the University of Queensland, said
current DNA testing required 200 to 500 cells to gain a similar level of accuracy. "What we have done
has brought that down to one cell," Dr Findlay said after releasing details of his DNA testing technique
at a Sydney conference.
The technology could allow investigators to pick up DNA identities from plastic cards and even build
up a complete history of the people who have handled a paper document.
"You'd have to wear a space suit to stop yourself from leaving traces. You can identify cells on the
paper, so you can work out where it's come from and who's touched it," he said.
The technique could also be used to trace the thrower of a punch (打孔) from cells left behind on the
skin of their victim. Even the wearing of latex(橡膠)gloves would not help: small cells can pass through
the gloves, and the constant flow of genetic material given off by the human body would leave further
evidence.
"We gained a skin cell from a document dating back 30 years and managed to gain a DNA
fingerprint. DNA evidence can remain fresh for decades, perhaps even centuries," Dr Findlay said.  "The
potential for this technology to solve unsolved crimes is great, "he said.
But Dr Findlay, named scientist of the year in 1998 by the European Society of Human Genetics, said
the new testing needed to be scientifically validated, which would take up to five years.
He said, "There are serious consequences taking on technologies too early. The public has to be sure
that they have the utmost confidence in the security and court systems."
1. The main advantage of the new technology is that ______.
A. it has brought down the cost of DNA testing
B. a single cell can identify an individual
C. a higher level of accuracy can be acquired with a single cell
D. it needs less than 200 cells to gain a certain level of accuracy
2. The underlined word" validated" means ______.
A. proved true
B. imagined good
C. supposed commonly
D. criticized strongly
3. According to Ian Findlay, the new technology can ______.
A. help to keep DNA evidence fresh for decades and even centuries
B. make the process of DNA testing much more simplified
C. help to pick up DNA identities more easily
D. be widely used in five years at most
4. The last paragraph suggests that ______.
A. the immediate adopting of the technology may cause mistakes
B. the public have acknowledged the new testing technology
C. it is safe to put the new technology into use now
D. Dr Findlay is quite sure of his new technology
5. The aim of the passage is to ______.
A. praise Ian Findlay for his work
B. inform us of the wide use of DNA testing
C. report a piece of interesting news
D. tell us a recent improvement in DNA testing

Harvard researchers have created a tough, low-cost, biodegradable (可生物降解的) material
inspired by insects' hard outer shells. The material's inventors say it has a number of possible uses and
someday could provide a more environmentally friendly alternative to plastic. The material, made from
shrimp (蝦) shells and proteins produced from silk, is called "shrilk." It is thin, clear, flexible and strong.
A major benefit of the material is its biodegradability. Plastic's toughness and flexibility represented a
revolution in materials science during the 1950s and '60s. Decades later, however, plastic's very
durability (耐用性) is raising questions about how appropriate it is for one-time products such as plastic
bags, or short-lived consumer goods, used in the home for a few years and then cast into a landfill where
they will degrade for centuries. What is the point of making something that lasts 1,000 years?
Shrilk not only will degrade in a landfill, but its basic components are used as fertilizer (肥料), and so
will enrich the soil.
Shrilk has great potential, the inventors said. Materials from which it is made are plentiful in nature,
found in everything ranging from shrimp shells, insect bodies to living plants. That makes shrilk low cost,
and its mass production possible should it be used for products demanding a lot of material.
Work on shrilk is continuing in the lab. The inventors said the material becomes flexible when wet, so
they're exploring ways to use it in wet environments. They're also developing simpler production
processes, which could be used for non-medical products, like for computer cases and other products
inside the home. They're even exploring combining it with other materials, like carbon fibers, to give it
new properties.
1. Paragraph 1 of the passage is mainly about shrilk's _________.
A. remarkable design
B. interesting name
C. major features
D. basic elements
2. What has become a concern about plastic?
A. Using it properly.
B. Producing it cheaply.
C. Developing its properties quickly.
D. Evaluating its contributions fairly.
3. According to the inventors, shrilk has great potential partly because _________.
A. it can help plastic degrade
B. it can be found in living things
C. its mass production has been realized
D. its raw materials are abundant in nature
4. What are the inventors doing in the lab?
A. Replacing carbon fibers with shrilk.
B. Testing shrilk's use in wet conditions.
C. Making shrilk out of used household goods.
D. Improving shrilk's flexibility for medical purposes.
5. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. Recent Progress in Environmental Protection
B. Benefits of Insects in Scientific Research
C. The Harm of One-time Products
D. A Possible Alternative to Plastic

The Internationa1 Space Station allows astronauts to live in space for extended amounts of time,
enabling them to explore the outside universe and conduct many experiments. However, nothing like
that exists for our oceans, and thanks to the high water pressure, ocean researchers are able to explore
what lies undersea for very short periods of time.
They are therefore never able to fully explore the deep inside areas of our oceans. However, if
French architect Jacques Rougerie has his way, that will change soon.
Jacques has designed a ship that will allow researchers to spend a long period of time observing the
sea life and conducting experiments. The huge l67ft. ship, named 'Sea Orbiter', consists of two areas-one
above the water where the scientists and crew will live, and a lower pressurized deck (甲板), where
scientists will be able to spend as much time as they wish. Since it is powered by sea currents and wind,
he expects it to drift (漂流) along the oceans slowly, taking about two years to circumvent the globe.
Jacques will make their life as comfortable as possible in the ship. Besides being equipped with the
latest sailing tools and communication equipment, the ship will also have a gym, a television and a DVD
player! And these guys will not be eating freeze-dried food like astronauts. Instead, Jacques, an accomplished chef, plans on cooking them delicious meals every day.
The biggest problem to this giant ship is the cost, which is expected to be over $500 million-per ship!
However, Jacques, who strongly believes that the secrets of our oceans may be the key to solving global
warming and a vital supply for food and medicine in the future, is confident he will be able to convince
governments all over the world to help out, and expects to start construction on not one, but four or five
of these amazing ships soon!
1. Why can't ocean researchers explore the deep oceans for a long time?
A. Because they can't stand the high water pressure.
B. Because it's too cold in deep ocean.
C. Because time for experiments is too limited.
D. Because it's dangerous to observe the sea life.
2. The underlined word "circumvent " probably means      .
A. fly away
B. go around
C. travel through
D. move into
3. From the fourth paragraph we can learn that      .
A. Jacques intends to design the ship mainly for sightseeing and traveling
B. living a comfortable life helps to do the ocean research quickly
C. it's much more expensive to eat freeze-dried food
D. researchers on Jacques ' ship will live more comfortably than astronauts
4. In Jacques' opinion, which of the following is not the purpose of the undersea research?
A. To find supply for food in the future.
B. To find supply for medicine in the future.
C. To draw governments' attention to the construction of the ship.
D. To solve the global warming.
5. Which of the fol1owing would be the best title for the text?
A. Sea Orbiter-the ship of the future
B. A new way to explore the deep oceans
C. A great architect-Jacques Rogerie
D. Travel around the globe in Sea Orbiter

Not long ago, an airplane was flying over New Zealand. There was a television camera crew on board.
Suddenly, out in the night sky, a bright sphere came into view. Everyone on board saw it and everyone
thought, "UFO"-Unidentified Flying Object (不明飛行物). The camera crew went into action and started
filming. That week people all over the world saw the film of this mysterious light on their television screens.
What was it? Was it a spaceship full of visitors from another planet? The captain of the aeroplane and the
film crew believed it was. Other observers had many different explanation. Some said it was Venus. Others
said it was just a trick of light.
An air traffic controller (機(jī)場(chǎng)導(dǎo)航員) also saw it on his radar screen. He thought that a flock of birds
was causing dots on his radar screen when the "UFO" appeared.
Most astronomers now believe that what these people saw was almost certainly the planet Venus. At that
time of year it is very bright and easy to see. And from a more aeroplane it can appear to be moving fast. So
far there is no proof that UFOs or spaceships from other planets do exist. These years investigators of UFOs
here investigated thousands of sightings-or occasions when people said they saw a UFO. Ninety percent of
these turned out to have a simple explanation.
However, it's a good idea to keep an open mind. Scientists in some countries are trying to persuade their
governments to help them study UFOs. And they are planning to co-operate internationally on reporting and
investigating sightings of UFOs.
After all, it is quite possible that there is life out there in the universe. And if something is alive, it is quite
possible that it will come to visit us.

[1] Doctors may soon have some suggestions for health that even kids will like: more playtime. European
and international health experts say a new study makes the most convincing case for the benefits of children
being active. They say the research may lead to new guidelines saying youngsters aged between 5 and 16 need
to be active up to 1.5 hours a day.
[2] Experts said the study doesn't mean children need to be on treadmills (跑步機(jī)) or in a soccer
leagues-they just need to be able to run around and play physically, even for short bursts of time.
[3] The study looked at 1,732 9-year-olds and 15-year-olds from Denmark, Estonia and Portugal. Physical
activity was observed for four continuous days. Despite differences among the three coun- tries where children were observed, the benefits of physical activity were the same.
[4] About 40 percent of those observed were reasonably ac- tive, while the rest were sedentary, researchers said. The study found that the benefits of physical activity applied to all children- not just to obese ( 肥胖的)
children normally thought to be at a higher risk.

                                              The Cost of Higher Education
Individuals (個(gè)人) should pay for their higher education.
A university education is of huge and direct benefit to the individual. Graduates earn more than
nongraduates. Meanwhile, social mobility is ever more dependent on having a degree. However, only
some people have it. So the individual, not the taxpayers, should pay for it. There are pressing calls on
the resources (資源) of the government. Using taxpayers' money to help a small number of people to
earn high incomes in the future is not one of them.
Full government funding (資助) is not very good for universities. Adam Smith worked in a Scottish
university whose teachers lived off student fees. He knew and looked down upon 18thcentury Oxford,
where the academics lived comfortably off the income received from the government. Guaranteed
salaries,  Smith argued, were the enemy of hard work;and when the academics were lazy and
incompetent, the students were similarly lazy.
If students have to pay for their education, they not only work harder, but also demand more from their
teachers. And their teachers have to keep them satisfied. If that means taking teaching seriously, and
giving less time to their own research interests, that is surely something to celebrate.
Many people believe that higher education should be free because it is good for the economy (經(jīng)濟(jì)).
Many graduates clearly do contribute to national wealth, but so do all the businesses that invest (投資)
and create jobs. If you believe that the government should pay for higher education because graduates
are economically productive, you should also believe that the government should pay part of business
costs. Anyone promising to create jobs should receive a gift of capital from the government to invest.
Therefore, it is the individual, not the government, who should pay for their university education.
1.The underlined word "them" in Paragraph 2 refers to ________.
A. taxpayers
B. pressing calls
C. college graduates
D. government resources
2.The author thinks that with full government funding ________.
A. teaching are less satisfied
B. students are more demanding
C. students will become more competent
D. teachers will spend less time on teaching
3.The author mentions businesses in Paragraph 5 in order to ________.
A. argue against free university education
B. call on them to finance students' studies
C. encourage graduates to go into business
D. show their contribution to higher education

American kids are talking more tests than ever before, and they're stressed out. Is help on the way? Just
the sight of a test makes some kids sweat. For others, it is a blank answer sheet. Then there are the frightening
words, "Take out your Number 2 pencil." All three fill 10-year-old Chelsea Logo with fear. "I start to tap my
pencil on the desk," says the fifth grader, "Then I feel the butterflies in my stomach."
Chelsea is not alone. In a recent survey, more than 70% of kids aged 9 to 13 said they worry about tests.
It's no wonder. Across the United States, public schools give more than 250 million standardized tests each
year.
Why do kids have to take so many tests? The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law requires that students in
grades 3 through 8 be tested each year. The law's goal is for all students to be at grade level by 2014. Students
must pass the tests and meet other requirements or their schools may be shut down.
US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan wants to change NCLB. But that doesn't mean he favors getting
rid of tests. Duncan believes tests should be used mainly to evaluate kids' strengths and weaknesses. Tests,
Duncan says, should not be used to punish kids or their schools for failure. "The goal is to focus on great
teaching and learning," Duncan said.
Under NCLB, each state sets its own standards for students to meet. The result, Duncan says, is that states
are making the tests easier. To fix this problem, 48 states are now working together to create common
standards. "I want to set a high bar for kids," Duncan says, "so they'll be in great shape to achieve their dreams."
Like them or not, tests are here to stay. So how can you handle test stress? Schools are teaching students
to relax through deep breathing and stretching. In Oakland, California, Principal Zarina Ahmad of Piedmont
Avenue Elementary leads her students in a cheer to get them excited about learning.
