About a hundred yards along the path, we came to a deep valley (山谷). On the far side of it, the path
led into some very thick bushes, rather than push through up again and rejoin the path on the far side of the
bushes.
As I climbed down into the valley a bird flew off a rock on which I had put my hand. On looking at the
spot from which the bird had risen I saw two eggs. They were a kind that I did not have in my collection,
so I placed them carefully in my bag, wrapped in a little dry grass.
As we went further down the valley the sides became steeper (陡峭) and not far from where I had
entered it came to drop of about twelve to fourteen feet. The water that rushed down all these small valleys
in the rainy season had worn (磨損,沖刷) the rock as smooth as glass. As it was too deep to climb down,
I handed my gun to one of them and slid down it. My feet had hardly touched the sandy bottom when the
two men jumped down, one on each side of me. They quickly gave me the gun and asked me if I had heard
the tiger. In fact, I had heard nothing, possibly because of the noise I made sliding down the rock. The men
said they had heard a tiger growling (咆哮) somewhere nearby, but they did not know which direction the
noise had come from.

3. The reason why the rock was hard to get down was that _______.
A. it had been worn smooth
B. there was no grass on it
C. it was wet and slippery (滑)
D. it was soft and sandy
4. At the end of the story, the writer knew that _______.
A. a tiger had run away

Lisa was running late. Lisa, 25, had a lot to do at work, plus visitors on the way: her parents were
coming in for Thanksgiving from her hometown. But as she hurried down the subway stairs, she started
to feel uncomfortably warm. By the time she got to the platform, Lisa felt weak and tired-maybe it hadn't
been a good idea to give blood the night before, she thought. She rested herself against a post close to the
tracks.
Several yards away, Frank, 43, and his girlfriend, Jennifer, found a spot close to where the front of the
train would stop. They were deep in discussion about a house they were thinking of buying.
But when he heard the scream, followed by someone yelling, "Oh, my God, she fell in!" Frank didn't
hesitate. He jumped down to the tracks and ran some 40 feet toward the body lying on the rails. "No! Not
you!" his girlfriend screamed after him.
She was right to be alarmed. By the time Frank reached Lisa, he could feel the tracks shaking and see
the light coming. The train was about 20 seconds from the station.
It was hard to lift her. She was just out. But he managed to raise her the four feet to the platform so
that bystanders could hold her by the grins and drag her away from the edge. That was where Lisa briefly
regained consciousness, felt herself being pulled along the ground, and saw someone else holding her purse.
Lisa thought she'd been robbed. A woman held her hand and a man gave his shirt to help stop the blood
pouring from her head. And she tried to talk but she couldn't, and that was when she realized how much
pain she was in.
Police and fire officials soon arrived, and Frank told the story to an officer. Jennifer said her boyfriend
was calm on their 40一minute train ride downtown-just as he had been seconds after the rescue, which
made her think about her reaction at the time. "I saw the train coming and I was thinking he was going to
die," she explained.

[     ]
A. She had run a long way.
B. She felt hot in the subway.

A. Because they would miss their train.
B. Because he didn't see the train coming.

A. By lifting her to the platform.
B. By helping her rise to her feet.

During summer vacations, I would work at a hospital for pets, so I'd seen a lot of dogs. Minnie was
by far the funniest-looking dog I'd ever seen. Thin curly hair barely covered her sausage-shaped body.
Her bugged-out (凸出)eyes always seemed surprised. And her tail looked like a rat's tail. She was brought
to the hospital because her owners didn't want her anymore. I thought Minnie had a sweet personality,
though."No one should judge her by her looks," I thought.
She was quite fit and didn't need any treatment. So I advertised Minnie in the local paper:"Funny-looking
dog, well behaved, needs loving family."
When a young man called, I warned him that Minnie was strange looking. The boy on the phone told
me that his grandfather's sixteen-year-old dog had just died. They wanted Minnie no matter what. I gave
Minnie a good bath and fluffed up(使松散) what was left of her poor hair. Then we waited for them to
arrive.
At last, all old car pulled up in front of the vet's. Two kids raced to the door. They took Minnie into their
