An open letter to the GE staff

Dear fellows,

I wanted to write you today about news that GE is being removed from the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). The DJIA is a 100 year-ago index(指數(shù)) that is meant to be a(n)【1】 sample of American business. It is a largely symbolic index and our inclusion is a function（函數(shù)） of our share price relative to others.

That said, GE is the longest-standing member and that is something I have always been proud of. I know all of you have been, too. While we were not aware of the announcement, it is not a total surprise. I have tried at every step to share with you our 【2】 but also the things we need to improve. That is what we are working on most. Our membership in the Dow is something that 【3】 our past, not our future.

Let me tell you how I am thinking about this. When I first heard the news, I had the same 【4】 as all of you probably did. But it quickly triggered my 【5】 side—the side of me that is deeply rooted in my love and respect for the company.

As a company 【6】 to technology and making an impact on the world, I would put us up against any company in the world. We 【7】 1/3 of the world’s electricity and two out of every three flights take off with GE engines. We have the largest install base of life-saving imaging equipment. We are a fundamental part of the day to day life across the globe. The world counts on GE and we are there to answer that 【8】 .

We have been making hard decision about our company. In life there are only two ways to deal with hard things. One is to give in and give up and the other is to fight. I am more than up for the fight. This is our chance to show the world what we can do—stare into the face of skepticism（懷疑主義） and cynicism（吹毛求疵） about GE and meet it with confidence, pride in the company and a(n)【9】 amount of hard work and resolve.

I said two things in my annual letter to shareowners: first, it is the people inside the company who shape GE, not the people outside and second, people who bet against us to do so as their own 【10】 .

Let us use to remind the world that GE is a company that matters to the world. We are going to win this flight.

I am a comic fan and one of the book I like best is the Adventures of Tintin wrote by Herge. I have loved the book since I first read it as kid. Tintin was a very brave and kind boy. He always catches bad guys and help people in need. I really admire her colorful life travelling around the world. The boy, which was born in the comic book in 1929, turns 90 this year. But the first Tintin shop was opened this February in Shanghai to celebrate his ninetieth birthday. I’m looking forward to paying a visit to there this summer vacation. How excited it will be to buy lovely Tintin products!

In the summer holiday following my eighteen birthday, I took driving lessons. I still remember how hard first day was. Before getting into the car, I thought I had learned the instructor’s orders, so once I started the car, my mind goes blank. I forgot what he had said to me altogether. The instructor kept repeating the word, “Speed up!” “Slow down!” “Turning left!” I was so much nervous that I could hardly tell which direction was left. A few minutes late, the instructor asked me to stop the car. It was a relief and I came to a suddenly stop just in the middle on the road.

Train travel is quite a different experience today. Little things can match China’s high-speed rail system, especially the speed at that it is still developing. The speed known as “China speed.”

China speed means a lot of to the country. The past 30 years had seen China’s rapid development in various areas, like economy and technology. We have seen dozens of tall building spring up almost overnight, with roads and highways reached every corner. Besides, mobile payments and online shopping are playing increasing important roles in everyone’s life. With so great achievements, China speed is now a model admired by a whole world.

Guilt is not only one of the most painful emotions that humans experience but also one of the most common. Nobody enjoys feeling guilty, but this emotion 【1】 an important purpose: It alerts a person when he or she has done something wrong. This enables the person to work to heal relationships that were damaged by their actions. It can also 【2】 people to avoid making similar mistakes later.

Nevertheless, guilt can be destructive if it is not dealt with in the right way. It can cause people to avoid others because they are too 【3】 to apologize for their actions or inaction. Some try to avoid the pain of guilt by turning to other worse habits. Others try to cover up their guilt by 【4】 others or becoming angry.

An added 【5】 is that sometimes people feel guilty about things that happen that they can’t control. One example of this is survivor's guilt, when people who survive a disaster feel guilty because they escaped death when others didn't. Other people experience false guilt because of 【6】 high expectations for themselves that they cannot live up to.

The proper response to guilt depends on what kind of guilt you're dealing with. For false guilt, it's important to recognize that guilt does not reflect an actual ethical failure.

For example, some false guilt focuses on failing to meet expectations you had for yourself. In this case, it's important remind yourself that you have 【7】 . No one is perfect, and no one can do everything, so 【8】 that is actually a sign of humility.

It's also important to acknowledge what you are feeling. Even when you don't need to feel guilty, these feelings are real and normal. Try to 【9】 them with positive thoughts, but realize that it often takes time for feelings to change.

It's possible that you feel guilty because you actually did something wrong--or didn't do something you should have. If so, don't try to conceal it. Apologize and forgiveness. Learn from your mistakes, and try to avoid committing the same acts again. Being 【10】 with the person you hurt should make your guilty feelings fade.

Guilt is painful, but it can serve a good purpose if you use it well.
