【題目】閱讀下面材料,在空白處填入適當(dāng)?shù)膬?nèi)容(1個(gè)單詞)或括號(hào)內(nèi)單詞的正確形式。

I love natural science, which came from my curiosity in nature. From 1 early age, I caught frogs and insects in the nearby woods. I explored the cool streams 2 (run) through the woods and searched for fish living in the water.

As I grew up, my interests expanded around subjects in school, particularly3 biology, chemistry and physics in high school. These interests were increased with more time4(spend) in the deserts of Arizona. The desert was not totally new to me, since I5(visit) relatives in Phoenix several times before I moved there. However, exploring the desert on my own was new. I checked under every rock and bush looking for 6 (sign) of life. I found many incredible animals. Once I happened to discover 7 (poison) snakes under a rock. I was very sacred. However, I 8 (eventual) grew to be cautious of them and now snakes are my favorite study subject.

I am now an ecologist. I have done research in deserts, forests, streams and lakes. Finding new species still 9(excite) me. I am glad to have a strong curiosity in the natural world. My hobby and curiosity make me 10 I am now.

【題目】The color of animals is by no means a matter of chance; it depends on many considerations, but in the majority of cases tends to protect the animals from danger by making it less outstanding Perhaps, it may be said that if coloring is mainly protective, there ought to be fewer brightly colored animals. 1. The kingfisher itself, though so brightly colored, is not easy to see.

2. Thus, for instance, the lion, and the wild donkey are all sand—colored. “Indeed, in the desert, neither trees, brushwood, nor even undulation (起伏) of the surface afford the slightest protection to its enemies.3.” says an expert.

The next point is the color of the mature caterpillars(毛蟲), some of which are brown. This probably makes the caterpillar even more outstanding among the green leaves. What would you do if you were a big caterpillar? Why, like most other defenceless creatures, you would feed by night, and lie hidden by day. 4. When the morning light comes, they go down the stem of the food plant, and hide among dry sticks and leaves around the ground, and it is obvious that under such circumstances the brown color really becomes a protection. While we may say as a general rule that the large caterpillars feed by night and hide by day, it is by no means always the case that they are brown: some of them still remain green.5, and that the brown color is a later adaptation.

A. So do these caterpillars

B. Therefore, the color of the animals is bright

C. We can say that they formed a good habit

D. Desert animals are generally the color of the desert

E. We may conclude that the habit of hiding themselves by day comes first

F. However, there are some cases where vivid colors are themselves protective

G. So the color of birds, snakes and even smaller animals, is of one uniform sand color

【題目】On a clear night, you can see a sky paced with stars. But you can’t see planets orbiting any of these stars, even with the strongest Earth—based telescopes. Astronomers reported that they discovered seven Earth—sized planets orbiting a nearby star called TRAPPIST – 1 in February. They had to rely on indirect evidence to tell them that the planets are there. By doing some math, they figured out the number of planets and the distance of their orbits.

TRAPPIST – 1 is a red dwarf (紅矮星), much smaller than our sun, but larger than Jupiter (木星). If the sun were the size of a basketball, TRAPPIST – 1would be the size of a gold ball. This star is one of our closest neighbors, just like the moon to the earth in space.

When astronomers using Earth-based telescopes to study TRAPPIST – 1,they noticed that every once in a while, it became slightly dim(昏暗). They decided that a planet must be passing in front of the star, blocking part of the light. This dimming would come and go as the planet orbited the star, passing alternately (交替地) behind and in front of the star regularly.

By making careful observations, astronomers expected to get a rough idea of the planet’s size from the pattern of dimming light. But the light level changed often and not at evenly spaced (均勻間隔的) times. The astronomers had to conclude they were looking at more than one planet! To get additional data, NASA’s spritzer Space Telescope measured TRAPPIST –1’s brightness nearly continuously for 20 days, catching 34 crossings of planets in front of the star. Sorting through the mess of data, the astronomers found that the innermost planet completes its orbit in 1.5 Earth days, while the outermost planet takes 20 days. Once you know how long it takes each planet to complete an orbit, you can work out how far it is from the star compared with the other planets.

The TRAPPIST – 1 planets are not alone. So far, astronomers have found more than 3,400 planets that orbit other stars.

1How did astronomers know the number of planets orbiting TRAPPIST –1?

A. They used their eyes. B. They used telescopes.

C. They performed some calculation. D. They made some guess.

2How does the author introduce TRAPPIST – 1 in paragraph 2?

A. By giving examples. B. By making comparisons.

C. By providing research results. D. By listing some numbers.

3What probably causes the star TRAPPIST – 1 to be slightly dim?

A. The telescope’s failure. B. The cloud floating around.

C. The star’s moving. D. The passing planets.

4What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?

A. The ways to get the information of the planets.

B. The introduction of the planets.

C. The distances of the planets to the star.

D. The astronomers’ effort of exploring TRAPPIST – 1.

【題目】It was dawn of March 21, 2018. Gary Messina was on his morning run along New York City’8East River. Suddenly something caught his eye—a large 60-year-old man balancing on the four-foot-high fence that guarded the path from the water. As Messina got closer to the scene, the man took a step forward and slipped into the dark river below.

When Messina reached nearer, the man was struggling in the water, clearly unable to swim. Other joggers also heard the man’s cry. David Blauzvern and John Green dropped their phones and keys on land and jumped in.. “ People had called the police, but it was unclear when they’d get there,” says Green. “We just reacted. Messina joined them in the river. Just as the jumper was losing strength, Blauzvern take hold of him. The pair were about 30 yards from the seawall when Messina and Green caught up to them. They seized the man, with Blauzvern supporting his back and Messina and Green holding him up from either side. As the men made their way toward the concrete seawall that stretched for blocks in each direction, Blauzvern had an awful realization:there was no way out of the river.

By now, a crowd had gathered on land. “A rescue boat is on its way, someone yelled to them. Swimming forward was getting tougher by the minute. The jumper, who was six foot two and weighed around 260 pounds, was heavy in his rescuers’ arms. After ten minutes, they managed to get to the river’s edge. “I’ve never been so out of breath , ”says Blauzvern.

Fifteen minutes after the men had jumped into the river, the two-man rescue boat appeared. But because it couldn’t risk getting too close to the seawall, the men had to swim out to it. “I was completely out of energy at this point, “ says Blauzver. The men in the water pushed the jumper while the men in the boat pulled him up and, finally, to safety. The man they had saved was taken to the hospital for evaluation(評(píng)估). Details on his condition have not been released. As for the rescuers, each of them was at work by 10:30a. m. “I was a bit late,” admits Blauzvern, smiling. “But I had a good excuse.”

C. The process of rescuing the man took up the whole morning.

D. The man was actually saved by the two-man rescue boat.

4Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A. The man wanted to commit suicide in the river.
