【題目】LONDON—Terror struck in the heart of London on Thursday as explosions ripped through three subway trains and blasted(炸開)the roof off a crowded red double-decker bus. At least 37 people were killed and more than 700 wounded in the deadliest attack on the city since the blitz(閃電戰(zhàn))in World War II.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair blamed Islamic extremists and said the bombings were designed to coincide with the opening in Scotland of a G-8 summit of the world’s most powerful leaders. Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said the bombings—which came the day after London won the bid to host the 2012 Olympics--- have the “hallmarks(特點)of an al-Qaida-related attack”.

Trapped passengers in the Underground railway threw themselves on the floor, some sobbing. As subway cars quickly filled with smoke, people used their umbrellas try to break the windows so that they could get air. Passengers emerged from the Underground covered with blood and soot(黑煙). On the street, in a light rain, buses ferried the wounded, and doctors used a hotel as a hospital.

“I didn’t hear anything, just a flash of light, people screaming, no thoughts of what it was. I just had to get out of the train,” said subway passenger Chris Randall, 28, who was hospitalized with cuts and burns to the face, the legs and hands.

“It was chaos(混亂),” said Gary Lewis, 32, evacuated(撤離)from a subway train at King’s Cross station. “The one haunting(縈繞)image was someone whose face was totally black( with soot) and pouring with blood.”

Police said there had been no warning and that the blasts at three subway stations went off within 26 minutes, starting at 8:51 a.m. in an Underground train just outside the financial district. Authorities initially blames a power failure but realized it was a terror attack after the bus bombing near the British Museum at 9:47 a.m.—less than an hour after the first explosion.

So I boarded the plane in mid-August,and hated the long flight.I arrived, tired and hungry.I had left my husband of 2 years, alone,in our old New Orleans house.

As the day wore on,I finally took the stage in front of hundreds of Europeans, and I realized, thanks to CNN,that New Orleans was under water.

I performed, hoping that my husband would survive. And I performed perfectly. The audience stood and applauded.I left the stage and went straight to the TV.I saw the street sign near my home,of Humanity Street, but nothing below it,except water.

In the days that followed,I found out that my house,my car,my clothes,my furniture, everything that I'd left behind was gone...but not my husband. He survived by riding on the rear bumper(后保險桿)of a VW bus, holding on to the overhead luggage rack,in the pouring rain, down the highway from New Orleans,half-way to Baton Rouge. The rest of the journey was a long walk, but he survived.

By the first week of September,I flew back to the Baton Rouge airport, and hugged my husband.Since then, our relationship has grown deeper;we have completely rebuilt our house, bought a new car, bought new furniture and new clothes and joined an inspirational,spirit-filled community.

【題目】In the Middle Ages in Europe, theater was an important part of civic, economic and religious life. During this period after the fall of Roman civilization, many cities were destroyed. Southern and Western Europe, famous for its agriculture, became increasingly more agricultural. After several hundred years, many towns appeared again. The Roman Catholic Church took over religion, education and politics. What remained of theater was mostly on the Greek and Roman performing arts.

Theater was reborn as liturgical(禮拜式的)dramas. It was written in Latin and dealing with biblical(圣經(jīng))stories which would be performed by church members. Then there came local dramas spoken in common language not Latin. They were more wonderful one-act dramas taking place in town squares or other parts of the city. There were three types of local dramas. Mystery or cycle plays were short dramas based on biblical stories organized into historical cycles. Miracle plays dealt with the lives of the great. Morality(道德的)plays taught a lesson through characters standing for good or bad qualities. Secular plays in this period existed, but religious drama in the Middle Ages is mostly remembered today. As the Middle Ages ended, the number of religious theatres became small as the church weakened and more secular qualities won over religious theaters.

A. People preferred religious theatres to other ones.

B. There were no other types of theatres.

A. European dramas

B. Religious dramas

C. Religious theatres in the Middle Ages

D. Secular dramas in the Middle Ages

【題目】Edmund Percival Hillary was one of the greatest explorers of the twentieth century. He was born in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1919. He discovered an interest in mountain climbing while he was still in high school and began climbing New Zealand's Southern Alps.

Like his father, Hillary earned his living as a beekeeper. However, he continued to climb mountains. His goal was to climb Mt. Everest, which is the highest mountain in the world. By the early 1950s, several expeditions(探險隊)had attempted to reach the summit of Everest, but all had failed. Then, in 1953, Hillary and a Nepalese climber named Tenzing Norgay became the first two people to reach the top of the world.

Hillary's spirit of exploration was not satisfied. He joined an expedition to Antarctica and reached the South Pole in 1958. He also made an expedition up the Ganges River to its source in the Himalayas. Sir Edmund Hillary was a brave adventurer. He went where no man or woman had gone before.

Although Hillary was best known as the young man who climbed to the summit of Mt. Everest in the 1950s, he continued his journeys to far-off places into his senior years. For instance, in his mid-sixties Hillary flew to the North Pole with Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon. Moreover, Hillary authored many books. However, his most lasting gift, perhaps, was the Sir Edmund Hillary Himalayan Trust(信托基金). It raised millions of dollars and contributed to schools, hospitals and many other public improvements in the Sherpa villages of Nepal. In January 2008, Sir Edmund Hillary died at the age of 88.

Despite being a great adventurer and known for the treasure he left Sir Edmund Hillary always modestly referred to himself as a simple beekeeper from New Zealand.

A. mountain-climbing B. bee-keeping

C. money-raising D. story-writing

2Hillary became well-known because ________.
