6."Look it up in the dictionary"is the usual comment when people are in doubt about the meaning or spelling of a word.Dictionaries are considered the final authority on these matters as well as on pronunciations and other facts about a word.
Until a few hundred years ago,however,people could not"look it up"because there were no English dictionaries.The ancient Greeks and Romans and the scholars of the Middle Ages had made lists of Latin and Greek words.(71)G The first great English dictionary listing both common and uncommon words was written by Samuel Johnson in 1755.
In America,the most famous name in dictionary writing is that of Noah Webster.He stressed American rather than British ways of speaking.His great dictionary,which first appeared in 1828,has been republished many times.(72)A The latest edition is still considered"the"dictionary.It defines over 450,000words,including radar,television and many others undreamed of by Webster.
(73)EThe huge ones that rest on stands in libraries are called unabridged,meaning"not shortened."They tell not only a word's meaning and spelling but also its pronunciation,origin,history,part of speech,grammatical forms,and ways of use.The smaller ones do not provide all this information.
(74)B A bilingual dictionary,such as a Spanish-English dictionary,translates words from one language into another.A thesaurus lists other words that mean the same as each listed word.A gazetteer lists place names,and a glossary is a small dictionary in a book defining technical words in that book.There are also dictionaries of scientific terms and ones on many other topics.There is even a dictionary of slang.(75)CThe dictionary is one of our most valuable language tools.

A.Each time,it has been updated.
B.General dictionaries are not the only kind.
C.Thus there are many kinds of special dictionaries.
D.In a general dictionary,each word may have multiple meanings.
E.Dictionaries that list all kinds of words are known as general dictionaries.
F.Over the previous 150 years more than 20dictionaries had been published.
G.But it was not until 1604that a book of uncommon English words appeared.

5.Harry S.Truman High School in the Bronx has eight floors,seven gymnasiums,a football field and a planetarium.But there is one place off limits to its more than 3,000 students:the 6-lane swimming pool,which has been dry for nearly three decades.
Within the New York City public school system,though,the troubled Truman pool represents a trend.Of the 50 swimming pools inside the city's 1,200 school buildings,10 are in unusable condition.At Martin Luther King Jr.High School (MLK) in Manhattan,the pool has been used to store old chairs and desks since 1986.The pool at Walton High School has been closed since the 1980's,despite a 54 million school wide renovation(整修).
For the swimming enthusiasts of the city public school system, the empty school pools are a hollow symbols of lost opportunities:to fight against obesity (肥胖); to provide summer job training in a city that has had to import lifeguards from Europe in recent years; to attract the students who just may love the water even if they hate everything else about high school.
The latest version of Mayor Michael R.Bloomberg's 13.1 billion,five-year educational capital plan will include 60 million for upgrades to a dozen school pools,including 7 million for Truman,and 4 million for King.But the school system's capital has historically called for projects that never end up happening.Also,the mayor's plan relies on 6.5 billion from the state,which is resisting a court order to give the city schools more money.
Teachers and principals say that when school pools work,they are shelters from whatever troubles may pass in the hallways and classrooms.Tension over test scores and safety concerns disappears when the students are swimming.
The purported(傳說中的)existence of a pool at Martin Luther King Jr.High School was such a mystery that it inspired an article in a student newspaper.Appearing under the headline"Unlocking MLK's secrets,"the article was accompanied by a photograph showing old furniture and a television set stacked next to the empty pool.At other schools,the situation is reversed."The seniors would always tell the freshmen they could find the pool on the fifth floor,"said Adam Kerzner,a Bronx Science swimmer who graduated from the school-which has no fifth floor-in 1997."It was kind of like a hazing thing."

56.The swimming pool in MLK High School.C
A.lies on the fifth floor of the school
B.served as a storehouse of old chairs and desks in 1986

A.insufficient attention

59.The author's tone towards the topic can most probably be described as.A

Taking a year off before college is becoming more and more popular among American teenagers.Some students use the year off to figure out what they want to do,travel the world,or save money for college.

"I think I'm already so much more mature than I was and aware of what really matters,"she said."So many kids do come back from gap years a lot more focused and prepared.
