How can I fight laziness?

Lazy people will never amount to anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind.

____1._____Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.

Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more proactive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone._____ 2.____

Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often contributes to laziness. ____3._____ Complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film.

Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately. ____4.____ Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task. It is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by motivated people.

____5.______Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits.

A. To fight family laziness, set an example.

B. Knowing how to fight laziness is important.

C. One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep.

D. Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness.

E. With strong determination, you will be able to achieve your goal.

F. Laziness sets in when you no longer feel in charge of your own life.

G. Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for the children.

E-books are a relatively recent invention. They are popular for a great many of reasons. An e-reader takes up much less rooms in a suitcase: perfect for people who had to take several books on holiday. Besides, lots of people don’t reread books; an e-reader mean they don’t end up with a house filling with books they’ll never look at again. People say they’re more environmentally friendly: no trees cut down for paper, or no ink is needed. However successfully these devices are, nothing can beat an appeal of a genuine book for me. Patricia Blues, 29, has a new aim in life: to keep drivers’ hands on their steering wheels and off their cell phones. On November 2, 2007, Blues lived through a horrible experience. Worldwide, 13 nations, including Australia, England, Germany, Japan and China have banned drivers’ use of cell phones in moving cars.

Danger-junkie orangutans(猩猩) in Borneo climb dead trees and shake then until they begin to fall. They scream with excitement as they cling to the falling tree. Just before the tree hits the ground the orangutans leap to another tree or vine, narrowly escaping death. While no one cab ask orangutans if they enjoy it as a person playing an extreme sport, one animal behaviorist sees this monkey fun as a bit of harmless thrill-seeking.

A growing number of scientists agree that animals are conscious and capable of experiencing basic emotions(情感), such as happiness, sadness, boredom or depression. A few scientists even see the possibility for higher animal emotions like love, jealousy and spite.

Five years ago, behaviorist and animal-rights activist Dr. Jonathan Balcombe stood on a Virginia hotel balcony watching two crows intimately groom (清潔) each other in the comfort of an abandoned billboard. He felt that the birds liked what they were doing, even if engaged in a natural, beneficial act, such as picking parasites (寄生蟲) off the other’s feathers. That moment changed the way he would view animals forever and led to a book, “Pleasurable Kingdom: Animals and the Nature of Feeling Good”, which is filled with hundreds of examples of animals living it up thanks to developed senses of touch, taste, sight, sound and smell.

Balcombe recounts a favorite example of Kenyan hippos (河馬) having high-end spa treatment in a fresh water spring. They splay their toes, open their mouths wide and wait for a school of cleaner fish to remove parasites and slough off dead skin, he recalls. Balcombe knows that the hippos and the fish both benefit from this arrangement. “My interpretation is that it is also enjoyable for them ,” he says.

1.Danger-junkie orangutans shook the tree to ________.

C. train their escaping skills D. frighten other animals

2.The purpose of the first paragraph is to ________.

A. describe an unusual scene among animals

A. animals can experience emotions

B. animals have a way to adapt to their environment

C. animals can copy what humans do

D. animals are only eat-or-be-eaten beasts

4.We can conclude from the passage that ________.

A. only a few animals have emotions

B. Balcombe’s theory is not supported by other scientists

C. Balcombe has watched a lot of animals showing emotions

D. Balcombe can understand animal language

Some people would have you believe that being fat is the worst thing you can be. They think that if a person is fat they have no life, no love, no reason to want to look good in their clothes. The sad thing is that many people who are fat do feel the same loathing toward themselves and others who are overweight or obese.

I know what I’m talking about because I have been there. I have been that fat girl who wore big T-shirts to cover my “sins”. Forget style. Forget fashion sense. I absolutely had none. I didn’t even bother getting haircuts for years, just wore my hair long and straight, pulled back in a ponytail, I have to wonder if the reason the fashion industry has ignored plus sized women and children for so long is because plus sized people, feeling they couldn’t possibly look great, didn’t bother shopping for new clothes, and therefore no profit was to be found by producing those sizes.

For me, the change that improved my outer look actually started with my outlook on life. I started by being grateful for all I do have, like great health, a stable family, a steady income, freedom, a decent home, the ability to see the trees turn orange in the fall, to hear my grandson humming in the back seat, to remember the great times I’ve had in my life.

I started to focus on all the positive aspects of the life I already had. I actually started to feel the beauty of the Universe all around me and to realize that I am part of that perfection. The self loathing stopped. I noticed all the people in my life who loved me in spite of my size. I got off the pity pot and smiled at myself. I acknowledged my shame and embarrassment and moved through that too.

1.We can learn from the first paragraph that ________.

A. a fat person is easy be taken away by others’ viewpoint

B. fat people always have a low opinion of themselves

C. fat people usually envy others who are slim

D. fat people usually have pity on each other

2.According to the author, the fashion industry ________.

A. makes a lot of money by making clothes for fat people

B. does not bother to make clothes for fat people

C. targets on fat people mainly for the purpose of making profit

D. looking down upon fat people too

3.What does the author think is the most important to lead a happy life?

A. One’s view on life.

B. The support and care from others.

C. Neglecting others’ views.

D. Focusing on one’s inner beauty.

4.The author is probably ________.

A. an expert at weight loss

B. a girl who is troubled by her weight

C. an old woman who is much careful with her appearance

D. an old lady who is happy with almost everything
