閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。

For Sparky, school was all but impossible. He failed every subject in the eighth grade. He failed physics in high school, getting a grade of zero.

Sparky was not good at Latin and English, either. He didn’t do much better in sports. Although he did manage to make the school’s golf team, he lost the only important match of the season. Throughout his youth, Sparky was awkward socially. He was surprised if a classmate ever said hello to him outside of school hours.

Sparky was a loser. However, one thing was important to Sparky — drawing. He was proud of his artwork. Of course, no one else appreciated it. In his senior year of high school, he sent some cartoons to the editors of the yearbook. The cartoons were rejected (拒絕). Despite this particular rejection, Sparky was so confident of his ability that he decided to become a professional artist.

After completing high school, he wrote a letter to Walt Disney Studios. He was told to send some pieces of his artwork, and the subject for a cartoon was suggested. Sparky drew the cartoon. He spent a great deal of time on it and on all the other drawings. Finally, the reply came from Disney Studios. He had been rejected once again. Another loss for the loser.

So Sparky decided to draw his own autobiography (自傳) in cartoons. He described his childhood — a little boy loser. The cartoon character soon became famous worldwide. For Sparky, the boy who had such lack of success in school and whose work was rejected again and again was Charles Schulz. He created the “Peanuts” comic strip (連環(huán)畫) and the little cartoon character whose kite never flew and who never succeeded in kicking a football — Charlie Brown.

1.School was impossible for Sparky because _____.

A. his family was very poor

B. he was not a hard-working student

C. he couldn’t do well in his lessons

D. he was naughty and always caused trouble

2.The underlined word “awkward” in the second paragraph means _________.

A. troublesome B. embarrassed

C. stubborn D. normal

3.Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?

A. The secret of success

B. Sparky — a failure at school

C. Nobody is always a failure

D. Sparky ― a lucky boy

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。

We’ve all heard about the power of positive thinking, but a recent study found that people who think they’re getting fit actually get more positive benefits from activity, according to a Reuters Health article.

The study examined hotel housekeepers over a period of four weeks. Some of the housekeepers were told that their work duties gave them enough activity to meet the Surgeon General’s health guidelines (準則). Another group of housekeepers were told nothing. After four weeks, the housekeepers who believed their work activity counted as exercise lost weight and body fat, and their blood pressure went down.

The results of this study suggest that it’s important to understand and believe in the positive benefits of your activity. So here are a few things to think about the next time you exercise:

Just thirty minutes of quick walking each day can greatly reduce your risk of a heart attack. Even your housework ― like yard work and house cleaning ― can help you burn calories and increase your fitness levels.

Weight bearing activity just a few times a week can build bone density (密度) and reduce your chances of developing osteoporosis (骨質(zhì)疏松).

Three 10-minute workouts(鍛煉) throughout the day are just as good to your health as one long workout.

Moderate (適度的) amounts of exercise have been linked to lower rates of heart disease, stroke and even cancer.

Strength training can help make daily activities like carrying bags or laundry feel easier.

Regular exercise will reduce stress, keep you in a good mood and improve the quality of your sleep.

1.The main purpose of this passage is to _____.

A. encourage people to think they will get fit in different activities

B. tell people how to finish the work duties better

C. tell people how to lose weight

D. advise people to do more housework

2.It can be inferred from the passage that _____.

A. thought is more important than activity

B. housekeepers lead a happier life than workers

C. positive thinking does good to our health

D. if one wants to get fit, think more

3.The housekeepers who were told their work would keep them fit _____.

A. found it hard to finish their work on time

B. lost weight and enjoyed better health

C. had little sense of humor

D. gained weight after the work

4.Which of the following is NOT the suggested things to think about when you exercise?

A. Housework helps burn calories.

B. Regular exercise leads to better sleep.

C. Weight bearing activity does good to people.

D. Walking a dog reduces the chance of a heart disease.

Ransom Myers of Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia warned, using solid science and careful analysis, of the dangers of overfishing. He didn’t mince words and he wasn’t afraid to report bad news. As the Guelph Mercury reported, the 54-year-old biologist, originally from Mississippi, was known for his research and warnings about the extinction of marine life around the world.

He developed a passion for marine protection during his days in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, where he worked for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans at a time when the industry was watching the collapse (崩潰) of the cod (鱈魚) fishery. He became, says the Guelph Mercury, a lone, unpopular voice in the discussion about the cause of the collapse, insisting overfishing was the main factor. The world was spending its energy fighting over the few fish left instead of cutting catch limits before it was too late.
He warned governments, the fishing industry and consumers, that unless commercial fishing was reduced, many large marine species would become extinct, leading to economic disruptions, food shortages, and lasting damage to marine ecosystems. He said his conclusions were shocking because people had lost sight of the true effect of the declines and they did not look back far enough in history. In other words, he said, “We’ve forgotten how big fish used to be and how many of them once lived in the sea.”

1.Ransom Myers was known for his scientific work in _____.

A. physics B. chemistry C. biology D. economics

2.The underlined sentence “He didn’t mince words” in Paragraph 1 probably means “_____”.

A. He always kept his promises

B. He was spoken highly of by his workmates

C. He was not good at giving lectures

D. He said exactly what he thought

3.Which of the following is NOT true about Ransom Myers?

A. He became interested in marine protection when the cod fishery was in danger of collapse.

B. He wrote a book about the history of marine protection.

C. He suggested that commercial fishing should be reduced.

D. Many people turned a deaf ear to his warnings about the dangers of overfishing.

4.According to Ransom Myers, the reason why people found his conclusions shocking was that _____.

A. they didn’t have a good knowledge of the living habits of fish

B. they could still catch a great many big cod

C. they didn’t know the great differences between the present and the past marine fishery

D. they thought his research was not based on a detailed analysis

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。

Research on the human brain has been attracting the attention of more and more scientists in recent years. One of the latest research topics is how to change the human brain or combine the computer and the human brain, i.e., to transplant (移植) a chip into human brain. This innovation (創(chuàng)新) may make everyone’s dream come true. If we compare a human brain to a hard disc, what the scientists do is to enlarge the capacity (容量) of the hard disc. There are some difficulties in such transplant experiments, but scientists never give up.

Experiments were started on animals. In 1996, a transplant experiment performed at the Defense and Military Physiology Research Institute in the U.S. turned a bear into a dolphin.

The dolphin was named Ted, and the bear was named Tallin. Using the most advanced technology, deep and detailed studies were made of the swimming action memory area in Ted’s brain by the scientists. They got a lot of useful information. The information was saved into a button-sized chip, which was then transplanted into the action memory area in Tallin’s brain. The information saved on the chip was released by means of electric power.

Recently, another memory transplant was performed at the Motor Nerve Research Institute of the University of California. The transplant was performed from a dog named “Genius” to a dog named “Idiot”. “Genius” could understand and follow up to 100 gestures and orders made by its master. It was a real genius. “Idiot” was the younger brother of “Genius”. It had no contact with people at all since its birth. It became an animal with nothing in its brain, without any memory.

The operation was a complete success. When the two dogs woke up, “Idiot” had all the abilities “Genius” possessed. It could follow every gesture and order given by its master. But “Genius” gave no response to its master, and in fact did not recognize him at all.

1.We can learn from the passage that _____.

A. the two experiments are about memory transplants

B. the scientists exchanged the dolphin’s and the bear’s brains

C. there is no possibility of changing the human brain

D. “Idiot” got only some abilities “Genius” possessed after the experiment

2.The scientists did the two experiments to _____.

A. see if animals can be taught some special skills

B. see if animals can share some common knowledge

C. learn if it’s safe to do such transplant experiments

D. make preparative research on changing the human brain

3.The underlined sentence “The operation was a complete success” in the last paragraph means that _____.

A. the dogs exchanged their memories

B. the dogs could live as before

C. the dogs were as clever as human beings

D. the dogs were safe

4.It could be inferred from the passage that in the future _____.

A. human beings will be healthier

B. animals will be more tender

C. human beings may get knowledge more quickly

D. animals will cause more damage to the environment
