A.The engine in your body.

B.The location, size and heartbeat of a heart.

C.What happens when the heart beats?

D.How does your heart work?

E. How do we know about the heart?

F.What can a doctor tell by feeling your pulse?

1._______ Your heart is sometimes called the engine or the motor in your body and sometimes called the pump.It works away, both day and night.First it pumps out some blood, rests for a few seconds, and then it pumps some more.In a normal day, the heart pumps about 2,500 gallons of blood from the auricles and ventricles.

2.________ When your heart beats, it is pumping blood to all parts of your body.If you could examine your heart closely, you would see that it is really two pumps placed side by side, and working at the same time. Each pump has two parts, the upper part called the auricle(心房), and the lower part called the ventricle(心室).The auricles receive the blood as it comes into them after it has been pumped through the body. The ventricles pump the blood out.The right one pumps the blood to the lungs and the left one pumps the blood to all other parts of the body.At the top and bottom openings of each ventricle are valves(閥門) which make the blood go in only one direction.

3.______ Your heart is located in your chest, a little to your left. This heart of yours, which is about the size of your two fists held together, beats about 90 times a minute.A grown person’s heart beats about 60 to 80times a minute. The heartbeat is not just the same in all persons, and it is not the same in any one person at all times.

4._______ By using a stethoscope to listen to the heart, the doctor can tell whether your heart is beating evenly and whether the valves are closing tightly. The stethoscope makes these sounds so clear that the doctor can hear them easily. The stethoscope has an earpiece that he places on your chest and tubes that he places in his ears. The earpiece carries the sound of your heart’s beating along the tubes to the doctor’s ears, and it makes the sound seem much louder than it really is.The doctor could listen to your heartbeat by pulling his ears against your chest.

5._______ An easy experiment can help you understand what happens when the heart beats. You can do this experiment with a hollow rubber ball.Make a small hole in it, and fill the ball with water through the hole. When you squeeze the ball, you will notice how the water comes out in a spurt each time you squeeze. After each spurt the ball comes back to its round shape again.Something like this happens when your heart beats. The muscles in your heart grow smaller, or contract, and squeeze the blood out of the heart. Each time this happens, we say your heart is beating.Perhaps you have noticed that the doctor places his finger on the pulse in your wrist when you are ill.By doing this he can tell how fast your heart is beating.

Grown?ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning trials(嘗試)increase the length of time we will remember it.

In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.

The multiplication tables(乘法口訣表)are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood.

The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突擊學(xué)習(xí))for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one's future development.

1.What is the main idea of Paragraph 1?

A.People remember well what they learned in childhood.

B.Children have a better memory than grown?ups.

C.Poem reading is a good way to learn words.

D.Stories for children arc easy to remember.

2.The author explains the law of overlearning by______.

A.presenting research findings

B.selling down general rules

C.making a comparison

D.using examples

3.What does the word “they” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A.Commonly accepted rules.

B.The multiplication tables.

C.Things easily forgotten.

D.School subjects.

4.What is the author's opinion on cramming?

A.It leads to failure in college exams.

B.It's helpful only in a limited way.

C.It's possible to result in poor memory.

D.It increases students' learning interest.

Forgiveness

Forgiveness is a quality that is difficult to have. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.

1. Try the following steps:

Calm yourself. 2. You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.

Don’t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way 3. Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.

Take the control away from your offender(冒犯者). Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who caused you pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.

4. If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s point of view.

Don’t forget to forgive yourself. 5. But it can rob(奪取) you of your self-confidence if you don’t do it.

A. How should you start to forgive?

B. Why should you forgive?

C. Try to see things from your offender’s angle.

D. Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.

E. For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge.

F. If you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time.

G. To make your anger die away, try a simple stress management technique.

For some people, music is no fun at all. About four percent of the population is what scientists call “amusic.” People who are amusic are born without the ability to recognize or reproduce musical notes (音調(diào)). Amusic people often cannot tell the difference between two songs. Amusics can only hear the difference between two notes if they are very far apart on the musical scale.

As a result, songs sound like noise to an amusic. Many amusics compare the sound of music to pieces of metal hitting each other. Life can be hard for amusics. Their inability to enjoy music set them apart from others. It can be difficult for other people to identify識(shí)別 with their condition. In fact, most people cannot begin to grasp what it feels like to be amusic. Just going to a restaurant or a shopping mall can be uncomfortable or even painful. That is why many amusics intentionally stay away from places where there is music. However, this can result in withdrawal and social isolation隔離. “I used to hate parties,” says Margaret, a seventy-year-old woman who only recently discovered that she was amusic. By studying people like Margaret, scientists are finally learning how to identify this unusual condition.

Scientists say that the brains of amusics are different from the brains of people who can appreciate music. The difference is complex, and it doesn’t involve defective hearing. Amusics can understand other nonmusical sounds well. They also have no problems understanding ordinary speech. Scientists compare amusics to people who just can’t see certain colors.

Many amusics are happy when their condition is finally diagnosed (診斷). For years, Margaret felt embarrassed about her problem with music. Now she knows that she is not alone. There is a name for her condition. That makes it easier for her to explain. “When people invite me to a concert, I just say, ‘No thanks, I’m amusic,’” says Margaret. “I just wish I had learned to say that when I was seventeen and not seventy.”

1.Which of the following is true of amusics?

A.Listening to music is far from enjoyable for them.

B.They love places where they are likely to hear music.

C.They can easily tell two different songs apart.

D.Their situation is well understood by musicians.

2.According to paragraph 3, a person with “defective hearing” is probably one who __________.

A.dislikes listening to speeches

B.can hear anything nonmusical

C.has a hearing problem

D.lacks a complex hearing system

3. In the last paragraph, Margaret expressed her wish that __________.

A.her problem with music had been diagnosed earlier

B.she were seventeen years old rather than seventy

C.her problem could be easily explained

D.she were able to meet other amusics

4.What is the passage mainly concerned with?

A.Amusics’ strange behaviours.

B.Some people’s inability to enjoy music.

C.Musical talent and brain structure.

D.Identification and treatment of amusics.
