Tom was a clever boy, but his parents were poor, so he had to work in his spare time and during his holidays to pay for his education. In spite of this, he managed to get to the university, but it was so expensive to study there that during the holiday he found it necessary to get two jobs at the same time so as to make enough money to pay for his studies.
One summer he managed to get a job in a butcher’s shop(肉店)during the day-time, and another in a hospital at night. In the shop, he learnt to cut meat quite nicely, so the butcher often left him to do all the serving while he went to the back room to do the accounts(賬目). In the hospital , on the other hand, he was , of course , allowed to do the simplist jobs, like helping to lift people and to carry them from one part of the hospital to another. Both at the butcher’s shop and at the hospital, Tom had to wear white clothes.
One evening at the hospital, Tom had to carry a woman from her bed to the place where she was to have an operation. The woman was already feeling frightened at the thought of the operation before he came to get her, but when she saw Tom, that finished her.
“No! No!” she cried. “Not my butcher! I won’t be operated on by my butcher!” and fainted away(昏厥).

閱讀下面短文,根據第53至第55小題的具體要求,簡要回答問題。
BEIJING, May 5(Xinhua) —The number of Chinese children infected with hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) continues to rise, with reported cases reaching 9,251 by Monday.
The latest HFMD infections occurred in the southwestern Chongqing Municipality which reported 42 sporadic(零星的) cases since Thursday.
"No fatal or critical cases have been reported in Chongqing so far," said Liu Kejia, vice director of Chongqing Health Bureau. "The disease prevention and control center has sampled some cases and no enterovirus 71 has been confirmed."
Beijing has recorded at least 1,482 cases of the disease in all the 18 districts in the city until Monday, of which 818 were reported in kindergartens. The neighboring Hebei Province reported 206 cases on Monday.
Altogether 25 children have died of the disease. Tests have confirmed 24 of the deaths were triggered by the virus known as enterovirus 71 or EV71.
According to the Guidelines Regarding Prevention and Control of HFMD published on the Ministry of Health website, HFMD can be caused by a host of intestinal(腸的) viruses, but EV71 and the Coxsackievirus (Cox A 16) were the most common.
Anhui Province, in east China, and Guangdong Province, south China were the worst hit areas. Twenty-two of the deaths occurred in Fuyang, a city in northwestern Anhui, and the rest in Guangdong.
Outbreaks have also occurred in Jiangsu, Hunan, Hubei provinces, according to statistics released by local health departments.
In Anhui alone, 622 new cases were reported on Saturday, including 362 in Fuyang, driving up the number of children with HFMD to 5,151 in Anhui.
Guangdong registered 925 cases as of Sunday.
Both EV71 and Cox A16 can cause HFMD, which usually starts with a slight fever followed by blisters and ulcers(潰瘍) in the mouth and rashes(皮疹) on the hands and feet.
Those sickened by EV71 often show serious symptoms. It can also lead to meningitis, encephalitis, pulmonary edema and paralysis in some children. There is no vaccine.
The Health Ministry issued a circular(通告) late last month requiring better management and surveillance of the disease, as it expects more cases in the next few months.
The ministry asked hospitals for daily reports on the disease, and for local health departments to report emergencies promptly and increase investment in research into the disease.
53. How many deaths occurred in Guangdong Province according to the passage?
54. Which place was seriously infected as it is reported?
55. Why are children so easily infected?

Thinking of starting to play tennis? Tennis is a great sport that requires mental preparation and physical agility(敏捷). The first part of being able to play the game properly is understanding the rules, and in this article, we’ll be discussing what are commonly agreed upon as the official rules of tennis. The rules of tennis are quite simple even though the game itself is complex.
Tennis should be played on a court that is built according to certain requirements. The court should be 78 feet long. For a singles match, the court should be 27 feet in width, and for doubles matches, the court’s width should be 36 feet. The net’s height should be 3 and a half feet. Service lines should be placed 21 feet each side of the net.
Opponent stand on opposite sides of the court. The player who delivers the ball to start the point is called the server. The player who stands opposite and cross-court from the server is the receiver. The right to serve, receive, choose your side, or give the opponent these choices is decided by a toss(投擲) of a coin. Once the choice of the sever or receiver is done, the first player chooses which side to start.
Tennis is a special game; it has special names given to the various points awarded. A score of zero is called out by saying “Love”, and from there, the points go to 15, 30 and 40. If both players get a score of 40, the game must become a tie-breaker, and a 40-40 score is announced by saying “Deuce”. In a “Deuce” situation, if a player gets a point, he is said to have “Advantage”. If a player with an “Advantage” gets another point, the game is over. If a player gets a point while the other has “Advantage”, the score is reset to “Deuce”.

In the early morning of September 7, 2006, Akif woke suddenly."Where am I?" she thought, confused, only to realize she'd fallen asleep in the children's bedroom in their east-end Montreal apartment. There was a sharp and acrid (刺鼻的) smell in the room.Could that be smoke? She leaped up, opened the door and began to cough. She ignored the flames that lit up the apartment as she raced across the small hall to her own bedroom, where a window was already open, "Help!" she cried into the dark. But it was 3:30 in the morning and nobody was around to hear. She was on her own.
Later, she'd say she thought of nothing at all.It was female's instinct (本能)that helped her uncover a supermum strength she never knew she had.She had no choice; her children would surely have died had they waited in their own bedroom for rescue. She ran back through the flames for her children, first lifting Sami, still half asleep, into her arms and carrying him to the open window in her room and dropping him to the ground from the second floor. Then, she turned back for Majda.
By then, a neighbour had called 9-1-1.Looking out of the window, Akif knew that jumping would be her only chance of survival. She also knew if she didn't, the very reason her family had moved out from Morocco five years earlier—— to make a better life and give the children opportunities they wouldn't have had back home ——would be for nothing. But why couldn't she move her left leg? She didn't know that her polyester pants had caught fire and melted into her body. All she knew was that she had to get out of the apartment.
56.After finding her house was on fire, Akifwent to her own room to _______.
A.save her children                            B.wake up her husband
C.ask for help                                  D.escape from the fire

A.was bom a brave lady                   B.was brave as a mother
C.liked to be independent                        D.was careless about her children

A.Because they longed for a better life and more opportunities.
B.Because they had to continue their study abroad.
C.Because they were forced to leave their motherland.
D.Because they were fond of moving to new places.
59.What follows the last passage is probably about __________.

C.how the fire was put out                  D.how Akif was saved
