11.Bobby Qualls was shopping when he received a text message:Fire on Beechmont,one-story house,child trapped inside."I was picking out gifts for the family our engine house adopted for Christmas,"remembers Qualls,who has been fighting fires in Memphis for 24years."I had this sinking feeling as I got in my car and headed over."
The last time Qualls had been on Beechmont Street was to install smoke detectors (感應(yīng)器) at the Bateman-Tubbs home.He'd been on a secret task to see if they needed extra help during the holidays.There he discovered that the four Bateman-Tubbs children were sleeping on bare mattresses (床墊),and he found two of the boys playing outside in 30-degree weather with no shoes or coats.
Qualls learned that Leonard Tubbs was doing his best to make ends meet laying floors while Kimberly Bateman stayed home with the kids.
"When Bobby told me his team wanted to be Secret Santas and buy my kids toys,at first I thought we didn't need any help,"Bateman recalls."It really touched me.I told him what the kids really needed was warm clothes."
That's exactly what Qualls was shopping for on December 9,2010:winter jackets for Christopher,seven; JoJo,four; Madison,one; and two-month-old Charles.While driving over to Beechmont Street,he dialed Bateman's cell phone.She answered on the first ring,screaming,"The house is on fire-JoJo's trapped inside!"
By the time Qualls reached the house,the family had gotten out,but their home was severely damaged.His coworkers had found JoJo hiding under a pile of clothes in a back bedroom.He had stopped breathing and had been given CPR and rushed to the hospital.Qualls learned that JoJo was now on life support and might not make it through the night.He rushed to the hospital with Lt.Mark Eskew,who placed a stuffed teddy bear in a firefighter's suit on JoJo's bed.
"I just kept praying my little boy would open his eyes,"Bateman recalls."There was nothing else I could do.They were pumping black and thick liquid out of his lungs and stomach for days."
After a few days,though,JoJo regained consciousness,and the tubes were taken out of his throat.While he began to slowly recover,the local newspaper and TV stations got hold of the story,and the Secret Santa Plan of Qualls and his fellow firefighters snowballed.Before long,the fire station was overflowing with boxes of toys,food,towels,and clothes.People called,wanting to donate furniture and appliances (電器) too.By December 23,Bateman and Tubbs had moved their kids into a new rental home.By Christmas Eve,JoJo was ready to leave the hospital,and the firefighters were ready to deliver the family their very own Christmas miracle.
"These guys aren't just firefighters,"says Bateman,"they're our guardian angels.If they hadn't installed a smoke detector that first day they came to our house,we wouldn't have known when the fire started.Then they went the extra ten miles to give us a Christmas."

18.Doctors at a Boston hospital last week performed the first full face transplant in the US,attaching a donor face to a 25-year-old man whose face was severely burned when his head touched a high-voltage(高壓的) line three years ago.
A team of more than 30surgeons and nurses worked for about 15hours to transplant the forehead,nose,lips,facial skin,underlying muscles and the nerves that power them and provide sensation(知覺) from a donor to Wiens,whose head came in contact with a high-voltage line on Nov.13,2008.
Bohdan Pomahac,the surgeon,said the team was not able to bring back Wiens's eyesight.But Wiens should be able to regain up to 90percent of normal sensation on the right side of his forehead,right cheek,most of his upper lip and his entire lower lip.Nerve damage was too great for there to be more than tiny sensation in the left check and left forehead,Pomahac said.
Doctors say the goal of the operation was to improve Wiens's ability to breathe, eat and talk and restore his face's social expression.
When Wiens recovers,he will not look like he once did,nor will he look like the donor,but"probably somewhere in the middle,"Pomahac said.The match between the donor and the recipient (接受者) was made based on race,similar age and blood type,etc.
Pomahac said he was worried the operation would not be successful when he first saw Wiens.His injuries were covering so large that doctors weren't sure there were enough remaining nerves or structures to connect to a new face.
Pomahac said he was determined to try his best because of what a patient with similar injuries had told him some years ago.That patient had numerous surgeries(外科手術(shù)),with only modest results.When Pomahac asked why the patient sought repeated surgery,he told the doctor,"I just want a taxi to stop when I'm waiting for one."

56.The first paragraph serves as aC.
A.conclusion       B.comment        C.lead-in        D.background
57.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A
A.Wiens's nerve damage was too great in the left check.
B.The left side of Wiens's cheek should be able to regain.
C.The donor's head touched a high-voltage line 3years ago.
D.Pomahac was sure that the surgery would succeed at first.
58.We can learn from the passage when Wiens recovers,he will look likeD.
A.what he used to be      B.the donor
C.Bohdan Pomahac          D.the donor in some way

8.For most of us,interviewing is terrifying. You have to highlight(突出) your strengths; make your past a story for future success; and develop a connection with various interviewers-all while trying to decide if you would enjoy the company.(36)DHere are the top three tips:
1.Know your interviewers
Interviews are between people, not companies. And while people hire based on skills and knowledge, they also hire individuals with whom they feel a connection. To help make this connection, know who you will be interviewing with and understand their journey.(37)FBut,don't overdo this.
2.Practice your answers
This may sound like common sense, but know the key points you want to communicate. (38)EYou cannot predict the exact questions, but there are basics that all companies will want to know:what you've done in the past, what you hope to do in the future, and how you will add value at the company. So practice.Answer briefly.Don't be afraid of silence.(39)CIt shows you're thoughtful and a clear thinker. It's also important to ask questions if there are several ways to understand a question or if you're unsure-it shows you're listening.
3.Follow your passion
Only interview for positions that you're truly passionate about-you'll do your best work at these companies. You can show your passion in the questions you ask and the examples you provide.(40)BAt some points, the person interviewing you was sitting in your chair.Employees want to work alongside people that energize them and share their love for what they do.It's the hardest thing to fake and the easiest way to stand out.

A.Look for a job that inspires you.
B.Everyone loves to work with passionate people.
C.Think about your answers and provide clear responses.
D.Interviewing is all about selling yourself and success.
E.Before your interview, think about what they might ask you.
F.Find your connection points and bring them up naturally in the conversation.
G.The key is to show you worked through the challenge by finding a creative way  around it.
