While CCTV’s educational show Animal World is well known, few big screen wildlife documentaries have been made by China’s film industry.

But Born in China, which came out on Aug 2, may be important for Chinese filmmakers who want to get into nature -themed films. The movie, directed by Chinese filmmaker Lu Chuan, was shot in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and shows the animals’ lives during different seasons.

Born in China not only brings to audiences the lives of animals that are rarely seen in the wild—giant pandas, snow leopards, and golden monkeys, but also shows Chinese traditional culture.

A symbol of China, the giant panda is both black and white. Its body is thought to show yin and yang, which ancient Chinese ideas were based on. The panda’s gentle nature shows how yin and yang lead to peace. It can be seen in the film when a panda mother guides her baby to look for independence and explore the world.

Unlike the shy pandas, monkeys always have strong personalities. The Monkey King in China’s most famous novel Journey to the West has many conflicting traits(特點(diǎn)). It stands for not only impatience but also cleverness and energy. Born in China follows a 2-year- old golden monkey who leaves his family, but then returns and understands the meaning of responsibility.

Just as the golden monkey, a mother snow leopard also faces difficulty in raising her babies in the wild. The leopards, known for their rapid attacks and quick footwork(腳步), have inspired a form of pictographic(象形拳) in Shaolin martial arts(武術(shù)).

“Born in China is a means to show off Chinese traditional culture,” director Lu told the reporter. “Chinese people have learned a lot from wild animals since ancient times. This is why I shot this nature -themed documentary.”

In the early 1980s, one of our neighbors asked my mom if she would make a few gift baskets for her to give as gifts for the holidays. My mom agreed and news of the unique gift baskets my mom was making spread like wildfire throughout the neighborhood. My mom was busy throughout the holiday season, so she asked a friend to help her. When the orders continued after the holiday season for baby gifts, birthday gifts and more, it occurred to them that maybe this job could be turned into a business and they did it.

My friend, Peg, and I were seeking evidence that there were people who were treating our soil, our waters, our air with the love and respect they deserved. And we found it.

One day we saw a busload of school children on an outing. The bus had stopped at a hamburger stand where we were having a rest, and half-a-hundred children poured out. Busloads of children, of course, were not new, and I hardly gave them more than a glance until I realized what they were doing. Chatting and laughing, the children were picking up as much waste as they could carry from around the stand and its parking area. They took the waste to their bus, where several bags had been brought out for the waste.

Within five minutes, before our astonished eyes, that parking lot had been picked clean. Impressed, I walked over to their teacher. "I'm interested," I began. "In fact, I'm surprised at how those kids worked this place over. Is this some kind of environment protection class?"

"You'd never guess it," he said, "but we're a history class. "

"A history class?"

"That's right. We're on our way from Boston to visit Fort(城堡) Ticonderoga. Before the trip, one of the things we tried to find out was how the Ticonderoga countryside looked back in old days," he said. "In fact, we made a little table display of the scene, using toy buildings and toy trees. When one kid jokingly suggested we ought to put a few bottles and cans around to make it look real, the others blamed him. But the boy argued that he bet Ticonderoga would look like that today. Besides, if they thought it was so funny, were they prepared to clean it up if he was right? The class decided, however, that the entire fort might be too big a task to do. But they agreed to clean up any roadside area where they stopped on their way to the fort. And so that's what they did!"

1.How did the author feel when he understood what the kids were doing?

A. Amazed.

B. Bored.

C. Disappointed.

D. Unconcerned.

2.Why were the students going to Fort Ticonderoga?

A. To learn history.

B. To go outing for fun.

C. To clean the roads to the fort.

D. To protect the environment there.

3.The underlined word "display" in the last paragraph refers to__________.

A. plan

B. show

C. cloth

D. game

If you live in the United States, the law says you can't have a full?time job until you are 16 years old. At 14 or 15, you can work part-time after school or on weekends, and during summer you can work 40 hours each week. Does all that mean that if you are younger than 14, you can't earn(賺) your own money? Of course not! Kids who are between the ages of 10 and 13 can earn money by doing lots of things.

Valerie, 11, told us that she made money by cleaning up other people's yards. Lena, 13, makes money by knitting(織) dog sweaters and selling them to her neighbors, and Riesa said she had started taking art classes and showing her work to people. People have asked her to draw pictures for them and they pay her for them. Jasmine, 13, writes articles for different magazines!

Earning is learning. By working to earn your own money, you are learning the skills you will need to succeed in life. These skills can include things like getting along with others, using technology(技術(shù)) and using your time. Some people think that asking for money is a lot easier than earning it; however, when you make your own money, you don't have to depend on someone else. The five dollars that you earn will probably make you feel a lot better in your hand than the twenty dollars you ask for.
