The Gobi is one of the world’s great deserts. The desert basins of the Gobi are bounded(邊界限制) by the Altai mountains and the grasslands of Mongolia on the north and by the Tibetan Plateau(青藏高原) to the southwest.
The word Gobi means “desert” in Mongolian. The Gobi is most famous in history as part of the great Mongol empire, and as the area of several important cities along the Silk Road.
The Gobi measures over 1,600 km southwest to northeast and 800 km from north to south. The desert is widest in the west. It covers 1.3 million square kilometers in area, making it one the largest deserts in the world. Much of the Gobi is not sandy but is covered with rock. The desert holds so many animals, such as Gobi bear, the wild camel and the black-tailed gazelle(羚羊), and is sometimes visited by wolves. The Kerulen River is the Gobi’s largest stream. It flows into small salt lakes or disappears into the sand. Nearly all the soil here has been removed by the north-westerly winds. The sand and wind storms are common. The Gobi has cold winters and short, hot summers. The Gobi is crossed by a high way, which links Ulaanbaata with Jining, China.

Sunday is more like Monday than it used to be. Places of business that used to keep daytime “business hours” are now open late into the night. And on the Internet, the hour of the day and the day of the week have become irrelevant (不相關(guān)的). A half century ago in the United States, most people experienced strong and precise dividing lines between days of rest and days of work, school time and summer time. Today the boundaries still exist, but they seem not clear.
The law in almost all states used to require stores to close on Sunday; in most, it no longer does. It used to keep the schools open in all seasons except summer; in most, it still does. And whether the work week should strengthen its legal limits, or whether it should become more “flexible,” is often debated. How should we, as a society, organize our time? Should we go even further in relaxing the boundaries of  time until we live in a world in which every minute is much like every other?
These are not easy questions even to ask. Part of the difficulty is that we rarely recognize the “l(fā)aw of time” even when we meet it face to face. We know as children that we have to attend school a certain number of hours, a certain number of days, a certain number of years—but unless we meet the truant officer (學(xué)監(jiān)), we may well think that we should go to school due to social custom and parents’ demand rather than to the law. As adults we are familiar with “extra pay for overtime working,” but less familiar with the fact that what constitutes (構(gòu)成)“overtime” is a matter of legal definition. When we turn the clock forward to start daylight-saving time, have we ever thought to ourselves: “Here is the law in action”? As we shall see, there is a lot of law that has great influence on how we organize and use time: compulsory education law, overtime law, and daylight-saving law — as well as law about Sunday closing, holidays, being late to work, time zones, and so on. Once we begin to look for it, we will have no trouble finding a law of time to examine and assess.
小題1:By saying “Sunday is more like Monday than it used to be”, the writer means that_____ .

This is the age of the quick action. We have instant satisfaction, fast food, speed reading, mobile phones; even the stress management books have titles like “Stress Management in 60 Seconds”.
Canadian Classics Professor Margaret Visser points out that the perception that we have “no time” is one of the most strict concepts of Western culture. Visser says that “no time” is used as an excuse and also as a spur(刺激); it both stimulates us and forces us, just as a concept such as ‘honour’ did for the ancient Greeks. According to Visser, the feeling that Westerners have “no time” is abstract, quantitative, amoral(非道德性的), unarguable, bringing pressure on each person as an individual. At the same time, the “no time” excuse escapes censure by claiming to be a condition created entirely out of our good fortune.
Life offers “so many pleasures, so many choices”.
The fact that women now work outside the home has contributed to the “no time” trend. But more important, Visser says, is the fact that feeling rushed has become an important component(成分) of our economy. Marketing of “time-saving” products causes people to buy more and work longer. So we eat out or buy prepared food to save time. The fax-it-to-my-car technology only contributes to the constant hurry. In our rushed and exhausted state, even the obligation(義務(wù)) to sit down to casual meal with family seems like a pressure. In comparison with the decision to act on a sudden whimz (一時(shí)的興致) to consume a microwave mug of soup, the act of eating together and not getting up from the table until everyone else has finished seems an incredibly time-consuming event. Being in one’s own personal hurry in the West is somehow “free and preferable”
小題1:The word “censure” in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to “

A.Marketing of time-saving products.
B.The fax-it-to-me-car technology.

小題3:We can learn from the passage that “no time” trend ___________.
A.brings pressure on the individual
B.is very desirable to the individual
C.is not harmful if you have no control of events
D.has caused heart diseases and psychological problems

Rumour(謠言)is the most primitive way of spreading stories--- by passing them on from mouth to mouth. but civilized countries in normal times have better sources  of news than rumour. They have radio, television, and newspapers. In times of confusion(混亂), however, rumour appears and becomes widespread. At such times the different kinds of news are in competition: the press, television, and radio against the grapevine.
Especially do rumours spread when war requires control on many important matters. The normal news sources no longer give out enough information. Since the people can not learn through legal channels all that they are anxious to learn, they pick up "news" wherever they can and when this happens, rumour grows.
Rumours are often repeated even by those who do not believe the tales. There is an interest about them. The reason is that the cleverly designed rumour gives expression to something  deep in the hearts of the victims --- the fears, doubts, forbidden hopes, or daydreams which they hesitate to voice directly. Pessimistic(悲觀的)rumours about defeat and disasters show that the people who repeat them are worried and anxious .Optimistic rumours about record production or peace soon coming point to self- satisfaction or confidence---and often to over- confidence.

We can achieve knowledge either actively or passively(被動(dòng)地). We achieve it actively by direct experience, by testing and proving an idea, or by reasoning.
We achieve knowledge passively by being told by someone else. Most of the learning that takes place in the classroom and the kind that happens when we watch TV or read newspapers or magazines is passive. Conditioned as we are to passive learning, it’s not surprising that we depend on it in our everyday communication with friends and co-workers.
Unfortunately, passive learning has a serious problem. It makes us tend to accept what we are told even when it is little more than hearsay and rumor(謠言).
Did you ever play the game Rumor? It begins when one person writes down a message but doesn’t show it to anyone. Then the person whispers it, word for word, to another person. That person, in turn, whispers it to still another, and so on, through all the people playing the game. The last person writes down the message word for word as he or she hears it. Then the two written statements are compared. Typically, the original message has changed.
That’s what happens in daily life. The simple fact that people repeat a story in their own words changes the story. Then, too, most people listen imperfectly. And many enjoy adding their own creative touch to a story, trying to improve on it, stamping(打上標(biāo)記)it with their own personal style. Yet those who hear it think they know.
This process is also found among scholars and authors: A statement of opinion by one writer may be re-stated as fact by another, who may in turn be quoted by yet another; and this process may continue, unless it occurs to someone to question the facts on which the original writer based his opinion or to challenge the interpretation he placed upon those facts.
小題1:According to the passage, passive learning may occur in _______.
A.doing a medical experimentB.solving a math problem
C.visiting an exhibitionD.doing scientific reasoning
小題2:The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refers to _____.
A.a(chǎn)ctive learningB.knowledge C.communicationD.passive learning
小題3:The author mentions the game Rumor to show that _____.
A.a(chǎn) message may be changed when being passed on
B.a(chǎn) message should be delivered in different ways
C.people may have problems with their sense of hearing
D.people tend not to believe in what they know as rumor
小題4:What can we infer from the passage?
A.Active learning is less important.B.Passive learning may not be reliable.
C.Active learning occurs more frequently.
D.Passive learning is not found among scholars.

Increasingly, Americans are becoming their own doctors, by going online to diagnose their symptoms, order home health tests or medical devices, or even self-treat their illnesses with drugs from Internet pharmacies(藥店). Some avoid doctors because of the high cost of medical care, especially if they lack health insurance. Or they may stay because they find it embarrassing to discuss their weight, alcohol consumption or couch potato habits. Patients may also fear what they might learn about their health, or they distrust physicians because of negative experiences in the past. But playing doctor can also be a deadly game.
Every day, more than six million Americans turn to the Internet for medical answers – most of them aren’t nearly skeptical enough of what they find. A 2002 survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 72 percent of those surveyed believe all or most of what they read on health websites. They shouldn’t. Look up “headache”, and the chances of finding reliable and complete information, free from a motivation for commercial gain, are only one in ten, reports an April 2005 Brown Medical School study. Of the 169 websites the researchers rated, only 16 scored as “high quality”. Recent studies found faulty facts about all sorts of other disorders, causing one research team to warn that a large amount of incomplete, inaccurate and even dangerous information exists on the Internet.
The problem is most people don’t know the safe way to surf the Web. “They use a search engine like Google, get 18 trillion choices and start clicking. But that’s risky, because almost anybody can put up a site that looks authoritative(權(quán)威的), so it’d hard to know if what you’re reading is reasonable or not,” says Dr. Sarah Bass from the National Cancer Institute.
小題1:According to the text, an increasing number of American _____.
A.a(chǎn)re suffering from mental disorders
B.turn to Internet pharmacies for help
C.like to play deadly games with doctors
D.a(chǎn)re skeptical about surfing medical websites
小題2:Some Americans stay away from doctors because they _____.
A.find medical devices easy to operate
B.prefer to be diagnosed online by doctors
C.a(chǎn)re afraid to face the truth of their health
D.a(chǎn)re afraid to misuse their health insurance
小題3:According to the study of Brown Medical School, ______.
A.more than 6 million Americans distrust doctors
B.only 1/10 of medical websites aim to make a profit
C.a(chǎn)bout 1/10 of the websites surveyed are of high quality
D.72% of health websites offer incomplete and faulty facts
小題4:Which of the following is the author’s main argument?
A.It’s cheap to self-treat your own illness.
B.It’s embarrassing to discuss your bad habits.
C.It’s reasonable to put up a medical website.
D.It’s dangerous to be your own doctor.

Due to the increasing number of violence acts produced in schools all over the world, more and more parents prefer to have their children educated at home rather than at school. This way they can assure their safety and well-being,although teachers and school representatives are trying to improve the situation in schools by increasing the number of the persons in charge of the safety of the students.
The main reason for violence acts are the films and cartoons that fill the children’s time. They want to do everything.they watch on TV and never think at the consequences, and they may hurt a classmate or a teacher.
On the other hand, parents are not fully satisfied with the children’s results obtained in classes and they consider private classes would have better results.
When a teacher has to watch 30 students in class he can’t probably see what each of them is doing, how he is writing,or if he understands the explanations. At home the teacher can explain in details everything the child doesn’t understand as many times as he considers proper.
And many times, the child grows fond of the teacher at home, who becomes his best friend, and who helps him whenever he needs someone to talk to.
However, the best solution would be a mixture between the education received at school and that at home, because school makes children communicate and socialize.Keeping a child at home for fear that there might be something bad happening to him only makes the child’s character weak and prevents him from knowing what real life is.Staying in a crystal ball only does harm to the child.
All in all, schools have been created to help children, not to harm them,so it’s best to keep children in these special places, where they learn, laugh, have fun and make new friends.
53.The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to          .
A.teach parents the ways to keep theft children safe
B.show solutions to developing children’s character
C.explain the main reason for violence acts in schools
D.a(chǎn)nalyze an education problem and give opinions

A.Advantages and Disadvantages of Private Classes
B.Who is to Blame.Parents or Schools?
C.which is Better, School Study or Home Study
D.The Relationship between Teachers and Children
55.Parents prefer to have their children educated at home because the following EXCEPT that
A.More and more violence acts occur in schools
B.Parents want to improve their Children's grades
