As I grew older, my dad and I grew further apart. We al?ways had totally different opinions. He thought that college was a waste of time, but for me it was important to finish col?lege. He wanted me to work my way to the top as he had done in his field, but I wanted a different life. There was a time when we did not talk with each other.

A few months ago, I heard that my 84-year-old dad was in poor health. When he called and asked whether I could move from Colorado back to Tennessee to help him, I knew he was seriously ill. I am his only child and so it was time to meet my father's requirement.

Two weeks after moving back, we bought a boat and started fishing again. Fishing was one of the few things that we did while I was young and that we both enjoyed. It is strange but true that as we are fishing we are able to put things that have kept us apart for so many years behind us. We are able to talk about things that we have never talked about before. Fishing has been healing the old wounds that have kept us apart.

It is not important how many fish we catch. It is about enjoying the relationship that we have not had for years. I' m 62 and he is 84. When we are on the lake fishing, it is like two kids enjoying life. It is far better to find a way to put the un?happy past behind. No joke: researchers say we are moving away from per?sonal ? real-world pranks and into a world of media-driven jokes and Internet boredom. Does this spell the end of April Fools' Day as we know it?

Though pranksters (惡作劇的人)and joke-lovers in many countries now gleefully prepare to trick friends and loved ones on April Fool's Day, no one knows exactly when or why, or even where, this tradition began.

The importance of this day of prank-pulling freedom is no laughing matter. It's integral (完整的)to American cul?ture. A day of funny is important to society, and also helps humans bond. Researchers say our reaction on comedy is changing, though. And that may mean fewer pranks in the future.

"The usual pranks that we would see 50 years ago are much less common," Gary Alan Fine, a sociologist at North?western University in Illinois, told LiveScience. "I think we are seeing the decline of interpersonal pranks.,,

"At one time, pranking played a bigger role in American society. Some of the pranking was also very harmful," Jo?seph Bo skin, a professor retired from history at Boston Uni?versity, told LiveScience.

This type of harmful prank-playing was usually directed towards marginalized(使邊緣化)sections of society. "Pranks have played a very big role in this situation, so I'm glad that the prankster part of it has declined, but the making fun of life in general goes on," Boskin said.

"The big problem is knowing where to draw the line be?tween playful pranks and meanness close to bullying," Fine said.

"Practical jokes of a certain sort shade into bullying, they shade into meanness and we are very concerned as a soci?ety about meanness," Fine said. "Finding out what that point is, is difficult for a society. And traditional pranking may be left out in the cold," Fine said.

5. Who will be made fun of on April Fool's Day?

 A.     Strangers.

B.     Friends and loved ones.

C.     Old men.

D.     Neighbours.

6. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 3 mean?

 A.     Serious affairs.

B.     Boring things.

C.     Funny matters.

D.     Foolish matters.

7. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

 A.     April Fool's Day is part of American culture.

B.     No one knows exactly where the tradition of April Fool's Day began.

C.     Pranksters and joke-lovers usually trick friends on April Fool's Day.

D.     There'll be more pranks in the future.

8.What's Boskin's attitude towards the decline of pranks?
A. Doubtful.                             B. Objective.

C.  Positive.                            D. Indifferent.

Chinese characters help improve IQ Chinese characters may be the reason why local children aged between 6 and 12 display a higher IQ than their peers in Britain, Germany and Australia.

The pictographic nature of the Chinese writing sys?tem helps to inspire the thinking ability of children. Their intelligence develops better while they learn the characters. 9

I am a retired Chinese-language teacher from Malaysia. From my experiences, I have long noticed that Chinese-medium-educated students always excel in mathematics as compared with those taught in other lan?guages. 10 The words for numerals are all monosyllabic(單音節(jié)的)in Chinese. In contrast, their equivalents(對(duì)應(yīng)詞)in Malay have two or three syllables, like sa-tu, du a, ti-ga, em-pat, li-ma, e-nam. 11 Their English equivalents-- one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine ten, hundred, thousand, mil?lion―include multi-syllabic words, too.

12 Children easily find that it is in the Chinese language that they can do the job fastest. Children taught in Chinese find it easier to learn numerals and can do their calculations much faster. This has been repeatedly proved by reports on Chinese-medium-educated students winning prizes in the International Mathemati?cal Olympiad.

Mathematics has a lot to do with IQ tests, as it is well proved that children good at numbers tend to have a stronger reasoning ability. 13 Teach the children Chinese so that they can think in the language. Keep their cutting edge in mathematics with the aid of Chinese characters, and this will improve their IQ.

A.    The secret lies in the Chinese characters.

B.    They are much quicker at learning languages.

C.    This was discovered by Dr Zeng, assistant professor of psychology at NUS.

D.    The difference between them is striking when it comes to memorizing the multiplication table.

E.    So, I would like to call on Chinese parents to treas?ure the language of our ancestors.

F.    It takes a longer time to pronounce these words.

G.    Therefore, I'm going to teach mathematics if possible.

It's difficult not to become involved in gossip at work. After all, people like gossip and interesting bits of information: you only have to look at the number of celebrity-focused publications to realize that we have a huge appetite for discussing other people's lives. At work, however, this type of interaction is harmful and costly. It wastes time, damages reputations, promotes divisiveness (分歧)and creates anxiety.

Rumours often grow because people like to be " in the know". Knowledge is power, and that's why the people with the least amount of power in an organization can often be the ones to start and spread rumours. It can make them feel important if they're seen to know things that others don't.

This knowledge is at the centre of why and how ru?mours start and spread. Insufficient (不足的)knowledge or incomplete information is often to blame. Consider these examples:

?People don't know why a colleague was fired, so they make up a reason based on some limited knowledge or insignificant facts. "I saw John override(打開(kāi))the cash register the other day without a supervisor present. Maybe he stole some money and that's why he went."

?People see a pattern of behaviour between two individuals and they add their own explanation. "Joseph and Samantha spend a lot of time together after hours 'catching up on paperwork'. And just yesterday, they were sitting awfully close to each other in the meeting. I bet paperwork isn't all that's getting done after work!"

These rumours are typical of the things you'll face at work, and they spread because of a lack of accurate information. So, the best way to fight rumours is with good communication. When you communicate well, your team knows what's happening, and they trust that you'll keep them informed. Good communication within your team also means that you will become aware of any rumours that are starting, and you'll be able to address them quickly and effectively.

5.    The huge number of celebrity-focused publications reveals that     .

A.    celebrities depend on publications to achieve fame

B.    people like discussing other people's lives

C.    the publishing industry is booming

D.    celebrities are rather disturbed by rumours

6.    The passage is developed mainly .

A.    by using time order

B.    by making comparisons

C.    by giving figures

D.    by giving examples

7.    What is the relationship between Joseph and Saman?tha in the eyes of the people spreading rumours?

A.    They are lovers.

B.    They are work partners.

C.    They are rivals.

D.    They are old friends.

8.    What is mainly discussed in the last paragraph?

A.    How to fight rumours.

B.    Why rumours start.

C.    How to communicate with colleagues.

D.    Why knowledge matters.
