A four-year study done by the Infant(幼兒)Testing Center in San Francisco, California, suggests that babies feel more comfortable around other babies than with strange adults.According to the study, babies benefit by being with their fellow infants daily. While on the other hand, a baby might show fear of an adult stranger, he is likely to smile and reach out for an unfamiliar infant.By the time babies are one year old, they have begun to form friendships of a sort.

The above findings, based on observation(觀察)of 100 babies aged three months to three years, might prove interesting to working parents who must find day care for their babies.Family care in a private home, with several babies together, is probably the ideal way to care for babies under three.Dr Benjamin Spocks, well-known pediatrician(兒科醫(yī)生)and author of books about babies, supports the idea.He says that family day care is sounder(有理由的)in theory than hiring a housekeeper or a babysitter.

In the 1970s, with ever-increasing international travel and tourism, the United States Department of Transportation decided to design a set of symbols(符號(hào))for airports, stations, and public facilities(設(shè)施). The aim was to design symbols that would be clear to people in a hurry and to those who can not read English. Therefore, the set of symbols shown below was designed. Then the designers planned an experiment with an international sample(抽樣調(diào)查) of 8-year-old children from Sweden. Japan, France, Canada, and Britain. The purpose of the experiment was to determine how clear the symbols would be to the children, who were not experienced international travelers.

The children were shown the set of sample symbols, and were then asked to explain to the experimenters what the symbols meant. The researchers thought that if the international sample of children could understand them, the grown-up travelers would probably also recognize their meanings. The following graph(圖表) shows the percentages of correctly explained symbols.

The experiments discovered that most of the children easily understand the telephone receiver and cigarette symbols. However, there were some interesting differences in their answers to the other four symbols. The Japanese children most easily understood the symbol standing for“coffee shop”. The experimenters thought that this fact showed children in Japan are more familiar with such shops than children in Sweden and Canada. The Japanese, French, and Canadian children all equally recognized the idea of“information”showed by the question mark.

Interestingly, the French and Canadian children understood the symbol referring to“campground(露營(yíng)地)”better than the other children. Again, the researchers thought that recognition of a symbol shows how common the activity is in a country.

One particularly difficult symbol was that of the umbrella and glove used for“l(fā)ost and found”, which was correctly explained by less than 50% of the children in four of the five countries. On the basis(基礎(chǔ)) of this finding, the experimenters decided to add a question mark to make this symbol easier to understand.

1.Which of the following shows the correct meaning of(X), (Y), and (Z) in the graph above?

[ ]

A.Campground, Coffee Shop, Lost and Found.

B.Lost and Found, Campground, Coffee Shop.

C.Coffee shop, Lost and Found, Campground.

D.Telephone, No smoking, Information.

2.If we compare the Japanese and French children's understanding of the question mark and cigarette symbols, then we can find a difference of _____ between these symbols.

[ ]

A.0% B.10%

C.80% D.90%

3.The _____ symbol was the most difficult for the Japanese children to understand.

[ ]

A.cup B.question mark

C.tent D.umbrella and glove

4.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

[ ]

A.The experimenters thought Japanese children drink coffee.

B.The most difficult symbol was changed to make it clearer.

C.The question mark symbol is the least difficult in all five countries.

D.The researchers thought children would know as much as grown-ups.

閱讀理解:

I always hated it when people asked me where I lived。 It was not that I did not like my home town, but just that it was called Panfromifwecanton! Few people believed there was such a place, and even fewer people could say it.

Actually, it is quite easy to pronounce. All you have to do is to break it into syllables Pan-from-if-we-can-ton.A syllable is a small unit of sound built around a single vowel sound.

  The vowels are a, e, I, o, u(and y when it sounds like an i).

Most words can be pronounced by breaking them into syllables. That is why Mary Poppins found it so very easy to say the word supercalifragilisticexpialidocius. Can say it?Try!

Breaking a word into smaller parts can also help you to spell the word correctly. You pay attention to each sound, rather than slurring them together.

As well as breaking a word down into its sounds, you can break a word down into its units of meaning. For example, sometimes you will find that a long word is made up of smaller words you already know, such as overcoat, raindrop, handbag.

A word can be broken down into three main parts:a prefix, which comes at the beginning; a root, or base, which is the main part of the word; and a suffix, which comes at the end.The trick here is knowing what they mean because a lot of them come from Latin and Greek.

When you see a long word, don’t worry.Look at it carefully, break it down, and you’ll see it.

(1)

What’s the main idea of the passage?

[ ]

A.

How difficult words are in the English language.

B.

Learn words by breaking them down.

C.

How words are made up of syllables.

D.

Why foreigners find the English language difficult.

(2)

Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

[ ]

A.

To help pronounce a word, first break it into syllables.

B.

Syllables are not built around a vowel.

C.

A, e, i, o, u, are the only vowels.

D.

A word has four main parts.

(3)

From the passage, we can know that Panfromifwecanton is a ________.

[ ]

A.

sentence

B.

dictionary

C.

place

D.

home

(4)

What can we infer from the passage?

[ ]

A.

There is no rule in the formation of English words.

B.

There are rules in the formation of English words.

C.

The meaning of long words is not determined by the short words they are made from.

D.

You can not understand long words unless you use the dictionary.
