Possible Limitations of Online Learning
If eLearning, however, is not based on solid instructional design theories and models it may lead to the following limitations:
1. It may be a "solo" act.
It is true that, although online learning might be convenient and flexible, it is also a solo act. It will not be easy for all of your learners to feel comfortable when participating in online discussions and engaging more actively with their online instructors or their virtual classmates. Some people absolutely need personal contact with their educators or trainers in order to learn successfully. Furthermore, some types of learning problems may be difficult to be addressed online, and some questions can be lost in a sea of requests and inquiries. 【1】
2. 【2】
However hard we try to fully transfer human communication to online platforms, however natural it seems to form relationships behind computer screens, a virtual environment is just not human. Nothing can replace human contact. Besides, using a computer or a tablet all the time can cause poor vision, strain injuries, and other physical problems. Consider sending guidelines about right sitting posture, desk height, etc. along with your eLearning course; it might be very useful to your audience.
3. It requires self-discipline.
If your eLearning audience lacks self-discipline, it is unlikely that they will be motivated to self study. Traditional learning and training have the benefit of easily tracking both progress and falling behind. 【3】
4. Possible lack of control.
However carefully you design your eLearning course, there is no guarantee that your messages will get across. You offer your learners control over their eLearning experience, but are they going to use it effectively? There is always the risk of your learners just going through the material without paying any attention. 【4】 Unless you know exactly what you’re doing with new technologies, it is very likely that you overwhelm or distract your audience.
Creating effective online learning courses requires knowledge, time, experience, commitment, great communication skills, and a true passion for learning. If you’ve got all that, then be sure that the advantages of your online training outweigh its limitations.
A.It may be impersonal.
B.If your eLearning content is not built to make the most of the medium it will easily become disengaging.
C.This sometimes makes learners feel they lack support and reassurance.
D.It may harm your mental health.
E.Online learning requires some IT literacy, yet not every one of your learners has much experience of computers.
F.This works for many learners as well, as some people prefer their progress to be closely monitored in order to perform.

【題目】 Grandma’s Marathon doesn’t have the nationwide recognition. In Minnesota, though, people who’ve never run more than a few steps are familiar with the race.
While Grandma’s Marathon has been on my mind for years, I always found myself committed to a different race. When my sister mentioned she was signing up for the race last fall, I followed suit. It felt so far away at first, especially during those early training runs in the dead of winter. That changed once spring began. Before I knew it, the marathon day had arrived.
I’m no stranger to this, but nothing prepared me for Grandma’s Marathon mentally. Race day would be cold and rainy one day, then hot and sunny the next. Part of this has to do with the fact that Grandma’s Marathon is in June, the middle of Minnesota’s severe weather season, which typically witnesses the most thunderstorms.
Things weren’t looking great the night before the race. There was potential for thunderstorms, meaning race cancellation, and the temperature seemed a little hot. Everything changed when we woke up.
I’m not sure if it was because of the fog present through most of the morning, but the race course was just beautiful. We passed through gently rolling hills in quiet, wooded areas for much of the beginning. And the first time I saw Lake Superior, it nearly took my breath away. Even the finishing area was picturesque. I really had a good race that day.
I come from a family full of runners and many of us compete in the same events. The sad reality is that it’s rare that more than one of us will have a good race during the same competition until Grandma’s Marathon 2018. Finishing in a time of 3:26:18, I ran the second fastest.

C.Relaxing.D.Interesting.
【3】What can we know about the Grandma’s Marathon?
A.The weather on the race day was severe.
B.The author made full preparation for the race.
C.Things were not going smoothly along the race course.
D.The author got a good result in the Grandma’s Marathon.
【4】How is the author’s attitude to the result of the event?

【題目】 A new study shows that air pollution can cause a huge reduction in our intelligence. The study was a project involving researchers at Peking University in China and Yale University in the United States.
The researchers reported that long-term exposure to air pollution can affect a person's mental abilities in two areas: Language and math.
The researchers studied about 25,000 people from across China. Between 2010 and 2014, these Chinese men, women and children were given language and math tests. Then researchers compared the test results with measurements of pollution in the air, namely nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide (二氧化硫).
Xi Chen of the Yale School of Public Health led the study. He and his team found that breathing polluted air can reduce a person's education level by about one year.
Chen said that the effect generally is worse for those over 64 years of age, for men and for those with little or no education.
“The older persons—they are more affected. And we find, quite amazingly, males are more affected than females. And people working outdoors are more affected than people working indoors.
He noted that the youngest people in the study were 10 years old, while the oldest was 90 years old. They came from China's 33 provinces. In his words, the data and facts are convincing and this range of ages and locations across the country provided a real, objective and representative sample.
The researchers noted that the effect of air pollution on verbal ability is even more serious as people age, especially among men and the less educated. The researchers also stressed that every country, whether developed, developing or poor, should focus on air pollution or humans will face a bad situation.
【1】What is the result of the study?
A.Air pollution has a bad effect on people's intelligence.
B.Females are more affected by air pollution than males.
C.Americans are more affected by air pollution than Chinese.
D.People working indoors are actually not affected by air pollution.
【2】What did Chen say about the study?
A.It is doubtful.
B.It is extremely unfair.
C.It is common and not representative.
D.It is relatively objective and persuasive.
【3】What did the researchers emphasize in the last paragraph?
A.The data from the 33 provinces is convincing.
B.The whole world should pay attention to air pollution.
C.The less educated take more responsibility for air pollution.
D.Air pollution's influence on verbal ability is less serious as people age.
【4】Where is the text most likely taken from?
A.A life diary.B.A guidebook.
C.A science magazine.D.A biography.

Think of Spider-Man, Iron Man and Ant-Man. Think of Black Panther, the Mighty Thor and the X-Men. Think of the Incredible Hulk, the Fantastic Four and all the other superheroes that have stimulated the popular imagination. 【1】. From a small office in Manhattan in the 1960s, he helped create a lineup of fictional heroes that have crossed from page to screen in a series of TV and movie adaptations and changed the face of popular culture.
For many, he was the face of Marvel, if not comic books in general, witnessing the company's rise to become an international media giant. As a writer, editor, publisher and Hollywood executive, he played a critical role in what comic fans call one of the medium's golden ages.
【2】. Lee gave the heroes flaws and insecurities, as well as an awareness of trends, social causes and a sense of humor, trying to 'make them real flesh-and-blood characters with personality, ' he told The Washington Post in 1992. 'That's what any story should have, but comics didn't have it until that point. They were all cardboard figures. '
【3】. Iron Man, for example, could join forces with the Fantastic Four, and Captain America could find himself a wedding guest alongside Doctor Strange. Lee created a fictional universe for readers to explore — one that made readers buy multiple series to get the whole story.
'I used to think what I did was not very important, ' Lee told the Chicago Tribune in 2014. 'People are building bridges and participating in medical research, and here I was working on stories about fictional people who do crazy things and wear costumes. But I suppose I have come to realize that entertainment is not easily dismissed. '
Stan Lee was as extraordinary as the characters he created, said Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger. Indeed, Lee worked tirelessly his whole life creating great characters for the world to enjoy. 【4】. His legacy will outlive us all.
A.He inspired our imagination and hoped we could use it to make the world a better place.
B.If all these entertainment products can be traced to one person, it would be Stan Lee, who died last November at the age of 95.
C.Lee also appeared in a number of Marvel movies, watering his lawn, delivering the mail, and so on.
D.In order to keep multiple stories going at the same time, Lee wove them together into a seamless(無(wú)縫的) fictional world.
E.Under Lee, Marvel transformed the comic book world by humanizing its characters.
F.Through the honesty of guys like Spider-Man, we learn about different aspects of human nature.

【題目】 Set your clocks for 4:32 pm(eastern time)on May 27th, 2020. If everything goes as planned, a rocket will launch from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.
【1】 So what’s the big deal? The big deal is collection of firsts set to blast off on the 27th of May. The first humans carried aboard a rocket developed by a private company. The first humans aboard a reusable rocket.
Ever since the opening days of the space age, NASA has designed, built, and flown its very own rockets, and capsules. 【2】 The privately-held company Space X will be providing the big rocket boost(加濕器)needed to get NASA’s astronauts to the space, aboard a Falcon 9 rocket topped with a Dragon crew capsule.
【3】 It is trying to make access to space cheaper, chiefly through the use of reusable rockets- once the payload is delivered into orbit, bring the rocket back down the Earth and polish it up for another ride.
In the meantime, NASA has spent the past decade in a highly bureaucratic version of hell. After the sad end of the space shuttle program in 2011, the American space agency was forced to rent seats on Russian made and Russian launched Soyuz rockets to get astronauts up to the International Space Station.
【4】 And now, if everything goes as planned on May 27th, we will make human access to space cheaper, more reliable, and absolutely easier. 【5】 Space tourism? Moon bases? I would say that the sky is limit, but the sky is just the start.
A.But this time, it’s different.
B.Rockets go off all the time from the Earth.
C.This made for great wounded national pride.
D.Most of the astronauts haven’t made it up into space.
E.Space X has spent the past decades working tirelessly.
F.NASA has been developing a new space launch system.
G.It’s impossible to say what kind of revolutions that might lead to.

【題目】 Somewhere between 40,000 and 110,000 tons of plastic waste produced by Americans ends up in the ocean, according to a study published in the journal Science.
It's difficult to point out where all that waste comes from, and researchers think that much or most of it probably comes from the nation's seriously-populated coasts. But there's also evidence that the nation's inland waterways serve as a passage for plastic to travel thousands of miles into the oceans.
While researchers have documented plastic and human trash floating in the world's oceans, there has been relatively little attention paid to plastics in rivers, streams and lakes. "To my knowledge, no one has studied particular routes, with the exception of places like L.A, and Baltimore Harbor where there are measures in place to prevent trash in rivers from entering the ocean." said Kara Lavender Law, an oceanographer.
The few studies that exist, however, suggest that it may be a huge problem. A 2011 study of two southern California urban rivers---including Santa Ana River---found that every square meter of water contained from 125 to 819 pieces larger than 4.75 millimeters. Another survey of the Meuse River, which flows 575 miles through France, Belgium and the Netherlands to the North Sea, found that it contained 70,000 pieces of plastics per square meter of water, about 500 of which were roughly an inch or bigger in size.
If there's anything positive in this, it's you that can do something, at least on a personal level, to reduce the amount of plastic that goes into the oceans. "Put trash where it goes." said Jenna Jambeck, an associate professor of environmental engineering at the University of Georgia. "Use reusable items---bags, cups and bottles---to reduce waste."
Finally, Jambeck urges people to pick up litter along waterways, and record it with a phone app called the Marine Debris Tracker. The data you provide can help scientists to get a better handle on the trash problem.
【1】According to the text, the least polluted place might be __________.
A.Santa Ana RiverB.Meuse River
C.Baltimore HarborD.The North Sea
【2】How does the author prove plastic waste in rivers is a huge problem?
A.By referring to experts' views.B.By listing statistics.
C.By making comparisons.D.By following time order.
【3】What does Jenna Jambeck advise us to do?
A.Make use of plastic items.B.Reduce the size of waste we throw away.
C.Stay positive about the oceans' future.D.Start from small things to deal with waste.
