【答案】
Dear Mr. Headmaster,
I am Li Yue, a student from Class 1, Senior II. I am writing to draw your attention to some improper behavior among us students: littering and scribbling. It makes our school dirty and unpleasant, and does harm to the image of our school. I always feel ashamed whenever I see this. It is clearly not appropriate for a student to litter and scribble about.
I wonder if the school could place more dustbins around us and set up specific rules against such behaviour. At the same time, students should be encouraged to develop good habits and better behave themselves.
I believe that, with the joint efforts of both teachers and students, our school will become a more enjoyable place in the near future. Thank you for your consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Li Yue

【題目】Dear Reader,
I receive many letters from children and can’t answer them all—there wouldn’t be time enough in a day. That is why I am sending you this printed reply to your letter.I’ll try to answer some of the questions that are commonly asked.
Where did I get the idea for Stuart Little and for Charlotte’s Web? Well, many years ago I went to bed one night in a railway sleeping car, and during the night I dreamed about a tiny boy who acted rather like a mouse. That’s how the story of Stuart Little got started.
As for Charlotte’s Web, I like animals and my barn(谷倉(cāng))is a very pleasant place to be, at all hours. One day when I was on my way to feed the pig, I began feeling sorry for the pig because, like most pigs, he was doomed to die. This made me sad.So I started thinking of ways to save a pig’s life.I had been watching a big grey spider at her work and was impressed by how clever she was at weaving.Gradually I worked the spider into the story that you know, a story of friendship and salvation(拯救)on a farm.Three years after I started writing it, it was published.(I am not a fast worker, as you can see.)
Sometimes I’m asked how old I was when I started to write, and what made me want to write.I started early—as soon as I could spell. In fact, I can’t remember any time in my life when I wasn’t busy writing.I don’t know what caused me to do it, or why I enjoyed it, but I think children often find pleasure and satisfaction in trying to set their thoughts down on paper, either in words or in pictures.I was no good at drawing, so I used words instead. As I grew older, I found that writing can be a way of earning a living.
Some of my readers want me to visit their school. Some want me to send a picture, or an autograph, or a book. And some ask questions about my family and my animals and my pets.Much as I’d like to, I can’t go visiting.I can’t send books, either—you can find them in a bookstore or a library. Many children assume that a writer owns (or even makes) his own books. This is not true—books are made by the publisher. If a writer wants a copy, he must buy it.That’s why I can’t send books. And I do not send signatures—I leave that to the movie stars.I live most of the year in the country, in New England. From our windows we can look out at the sea and the mountains.I live near my married son and three grandchildren.
Are my stories true, you ask? No, they are imaginary tales, containing fantastic characters and events. In real life, a family doesn’t have a child who looks like a mouse; in real life, a spider doesn’t spin words in her web.In real life, a swan doesn’t blow a trumpet. But real life is only one kind of life—there is also the life of the imagination. And although my stories are imaginary, I like to think that there is some truth in them, too—truth about the way people and animals feel and think and act.
Yours sincerely:E.B.White

【題目】No poem should ever be discussed or “analyzed”, until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.
All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling “interpretation” of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on film, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching cannot replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it.
I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than “analyzing” it, if there isn’t time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is “ a criticism(批判) of life”, and “a heightening(提升) of life”. It is “an approach to the truth of feeling”, and it “can save your life”. It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.
I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don’t like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.
【1】To have a better understanding of a poem, one should________.
A. discuss it with others
B. analyze it by oneself
C. copy it down in a notebook
D. practise reading it aloud
【2】Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a function of poetry?
A. Extending your life B. Saving your life
C. Criticizing life D. Heightening life
【3】What does the last sentence in the third paragraph mean?
A. More stress should be laid on the teaching of poetry.
B. Poetry is more important than any other subject.
C. One cannot enjoy life fully without an understanding of poetry
D. Poetry is the foundation of all language and literature courses

【題目】Technology is creating big changes in the music industry. Music lovers listen to and buy music on the Internet. They can watch live concerts of favorite artists online. And music makers, as well as music industry officials, use social media(媒體) to reach an increase public interest.

You can make use of it to reach the public.” Sherwin says the Internet and social media have created possibilities for musicians. He says 70 percent of Americans say they discover new music from what they hear on the radio. But Rob Light says radio will soon be a thing of the past. However, Nick Sherwin is not worried. 【題目】Education is an expensive part of American life. Its size is matched by its variety. Differences in American schools compared with those found in the majority of other countries lie in the fact that education here has long been intended for everyone. Schools are expected to meet the needs of every child, regardless of ability, and also the needs of society itself. This means that public schools offer more than academic subjects. It surprises many people when they come here to find high schools offering such courses as typing, sewing, radio repair, computer programming or driver training, along with traditional academic subjects such as mathematics, history, and languages. Students choose their courses depending on their interests, future goals, and level of ability. The basic goal of American education is to develop every child to the utmost of his or her own possibilities, and to give each one a sense of community.
Schools have traditionally played an important role in creating national unity and “Americanizing” the millions of immigrants who have poured into this country from many different backgrounds and origins. Schools still play a large role in the community, especially in the small towns.
The teaching may seem unfamiliar to many, not only because it is informal, but also because there is not much emphasis on learning facts. Instead, Americans try to teach their children to think for themselves and to develop their own intellectual and creative abilities. Students spend much time learning how to use materials, libraries, statistics, and computers. Americans believe that if children are taught to reason well and to research well, they will be able to find whatever facts they need throughout the rest of their lives. Knowing how to solve problems is considered more important than the accumulation (積累) of facts.
This is America’s answer to the searching question that thoughtful parents all over the world are asking themselves in the fast-moving time, “How can one prepare today’s child for a tomorrow that one can neither predict nor understand?”
【1】The underlined words “reason well” probably means _____.
A. persuade firmly B. list the reasons clearly
C. think logically D. conclude immediately
【2】It is implied in the passage that _____.
A. all high-school students take the same courses
B. every student must take practical ability training courses
C. every public school offers the same academic subjects
D. the subjects every student takes may vary
【3】American schools place great emphasis on the learners’ _____.
A. knowledge B. accumulation of facts
C. creativity D. ability to work with hands
【4】What makes American education different from others’?
A. The large number of schools.
B. The variety of the courses.
C. Its consideration for immigrants.
D. The basic goal of the education.
