Imagine your body is like the house you live in. Every day, your family creates rubbish. The rubbish builds up until it is put out for the weekly garbage collection.
Now, say you put three bags of garbage out, but because one of the collectors was away sick, only two bags are collected. You take the leftover bag inside to be put out again next week. The following week you put on another three bags, plus the leftover bag from last week. But again, only two bags are collected. Imagine this cycle is repeated over the following weeks.
This is a simple description of what happens to your body when your kidneys (腎臟) don’t work efficiently. Your body is not thoroughly emptied of waste products. Other areas of the body such as blood pressure and red blood cell production are affected and the insidious process that may lead to kidney failure begins.
It’s not uncommon for people to lose up to 90% of their kidney function before developing any symptoms. There may be no warning signs. This makes early detection (診查) difficult.
Kidney’s main job is to remove toxins (毒素) and unwanted water from our blood. Every day our kidneys clean an average of 200 litres of blood. Kidney failure may be a gradual and silent process, going unnoticed because there is no apparent pain.
Research shows that more than 25% of the patients requiring dialysis (透析) do not see a kidney specialist before they have to do so. Some risk factors for kidney disease such as age and genetic make up are out of our control; however, some changes in lifestyle may help prevent kidney damage. Two major risk factors for kidney disease, diabetes (糖尿病) and high blood pressure, have been on the rise over the last few decades. Both conditions are chiefly affected by being overweight and not getting enough exercises, which are the potential risk factors for the kidney disease.
1. The author gives the example of the house we live in to indicate that _______.
A. it’s safe and harmless for our body to keep some waste
B. it’s important for our body to empty the waste in time every day
C. our body will not produce any waste if our kidneys work efficiently
D. it doesn’t matter much if the waste in our body is not emptied in time
2.The underlined word “insidious” in the third paragraph means _______.
A. smooth and safe B. obvious and fast
C. gradual and unnoticed D. long and painful
3.We can infer that when we find some symptoms related to our kidneys, _______.
A. the kidney failure begins
B. the kidneys can still work properly
C. we have lost about 10% of kidney function
D. the kidneys may have been seriously damaged
4. Which of the following helps prevent kidney damage most effectively?
A. Go to see a kidney specialist shortly before dialysis starts.
B. Take enough exercise and make early detection of kidney disease.
C. Try to keep low blood pressure and a stable lifestyle.
D. Go to hospital whenever you find any warning signs.

Dear David,
I’m glad you would like to share your feelings with me.It’s hardly surprising that your feelings of not being “grown up” have come on strongly at this point in your life, just before you’re about to become a father. You are asking:will I make a good father? How will I cope?
Should I have brought another little person into the world? Can l provide for it? Help! I think nearly every sensitive about-to-be-parent must have these occasional feelings of self-doubt and inadequacy(不適)before the birth and it would be most unusual if you didn't share them. It's difficult, honestly,to feel grown-up unless you have something less grown-up to relate to.
The boss with a hen-pecking wife may feel like a seven-year-old when he’s at home. But as he walks through the office door, and knows he’s going to be surrounded by staff looking to him for Advice,he grows into a fully mature man.And I think it’s a mistake to imagine that we all feel,as we age,a kind of progression of states, from the baby to the adult. Most people feel,on Tuesday, about three years old,and on a Wednesday, around 80.
There's a common remark that “all men are little boys”,but it's not true. It's more true that men often behave like little boys. But nearly all people,at some moments in their lives, are capable of groat maturity.
Once your baby arrives, you’ll soon feel less childlike,or rather, less often. When your child tries to put its fingers into the electric plug, the adult in you will rise up to prevent it.You’ll see
you have very little in common with a needy child, particularly if it's looking to you for comfort and support.
Comfort yourself,David, with two truths. One is that your friends laugh when they talk about this subject because they, like you, feel frightened. And remember that people who haven't grown up don’t go around talking about the fact that they don’t feel grown-up.
Hope my advice will be helpful and good luck to you and your little one.
Yours sincerely
Miss Advice

There seems to be a general assumption that brilliant people cannot stand routine ; that they need a varied , exciting life in order to do their best . It is also assumed that dull people are particularly suited for dull work . We are told that the reason the present-day young complain so loudly about the dullness of jobs is that they are better educated and brighter than the young of the past .
Actually , there is no evidence that people who achieve a lot desire , let alone live , colorful lives . The opposite is nearer the truth . Einstein worked out his theory of relativity while serving as a clerk in a Swiss patent office . Immanuel Kant’s(康德)daily life was a dull routine . The housewives of Konigsberg set their clocks when they saw him pass , on his way to the university . He took the same walk each morning , rain or shine . The greatest distance Kant ever traveled was sixty miles from Konigsberg .
It may be true that work on the assembly line(流水線)dulls the abilities and empties the mind , and the cure is only fewer hours of work at higher pay . But during fifty years as a workingman , I have found dull routine coexisting with an active mind . While doing dull , repetitive work by the water , I could talk with my partners and compose sentences in my mind , all at the same time . Chances are that had my work been too interesting I could not have done any thinking and composing at work or even on my own time after returning from work .
People who find dull jobs unbearable are often dull people who do not know what to do with themselves at leisure . Children and mature people will get used to dull routine , while the adolescent , who has lost the child’s ability for concentration and is without the inner resources of the mature , needs excitement and novelty to get rid of boredom .
1. It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that __________ .
A. great minds hate to live colorful lives
B. Einstein worked out his theory in a university
C. Kant only took the same walk on rainy and sunny days
D. Kant might pass Konigsberg every day at the same time
2.How does the author feel about his repetitive work by the water ?
A. It made his mind empty .
B. It was well-paid but too demanding .
C. It worked well with his active mind .
D. It was too interesting to think of anything else .
3.The reasons why youngsters dislike dull work include the following EXCEPT that they __________ .
A. are not mature enough
B. think themselves smart
C. often complain about others
D. don’t know how to spend spare time
4.What is the purpose of the passage ?
A. To argue for the benefits of dull work .
B. To present some facts about dull work .
C. To share his own dull working experience .
D. To persuade young people to live a dull life .
