Here's a new warning from health experts: Sitting is deadly. Scientists are increasingly warning that sitting for prolonged periods — even if you also exercise regularly — could be   1 for your health. And it doesn't matter where the sitting takes place — at the office, at school, in the car or before a computer or TV — just the overall number of hours it   2  .
Research is preliminary, but several studies   3 people who spend most of their days sitting are more likely to be fat, have a heart attack or even die.
In an editorial   4 this week in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, Elin Ekblom-Bak of the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences suggested that authorities rethink how they define   5 activity to highlight the dangers of sitting.
While health officials have issued guidelines   6 minimum amounts of physical activity, they haven't suggested people try to limit how much time they spend in a seated   7  .
"After four hours of sitting, the body starts to send   8 signals," Ekblom-Bak said. She explained that genes regulating the amount of glucoseand fat in the   9 start to shut down.
Even for people who   10  , spending long stretches of time sitting at a desk is still harmful. Tim Armstrong, a physical activity expert at the World Health Organization, said people who exercise every day —   11 still spend a lot of time sitting — might get more benefit if that exercise were spread across the day,    12 in a single bout.
That wasn't   13 news for Aytekin Can, 31, who works at a London financial company, and spends most of his days sitting    14  a computer. Several evenings a week, Can also teaches jiu jitsu, a Japanese martial art  15 wrestling, and also does Thai boxing.
"I'm sure there are some detrimental   16 of staying still for too long, but I hope that being   17 when I can helps," he said. "I wouldn't want to think the sitting could be   18 dangerous."
Still, in a study published last year that tracked more than 17,000 Canadians for about a dozen years, researchers found people who sat   19 had a higher death risk, independently of whether or not they exercised.
Figures from a US survey in 2003-2004 found Americans spend more than half their time sitting, from working at their desks to sitting in cars.
Experts said more research is needed to    20 just how much sitting is dangerous, and what might be possible to offset those effects.

Today’s generation of young people is the largest in human history. Nearly half the world’s population — more than 3 billion people — are under the age of 25. More than half the world’s young people — about 850 million between the ages of 10 and 24 — live in Asia and the Pacific region.
This rapidly expanding youth population is increasingly vulnerable to HIV.  Young people are at the center of the HIV/AIDS epidemic . Of the 10 million young people living with HIV worldwide, 21% live in Asia and the Pacific region. When surveying of all new HIV/AIDS cases globally, nearly a quarter of all people living with HIV/AIDS are under the age of 25. An estimated 6,000 young people are infected every day — one every 14 minutes. The majority are women and girls. In South Asia, where over 1 million young people between the ages of 15 to 24 are infected with HIV, more than half (62%) are young women.
Young people are key to defeating the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Yet in most countries, they lack the information, education and services that will enable them to make informed and healthy choices about their health, and the needs of youths are often ignored. UNESCO, in collaboration with other UN agencies, governments, NGOs and community-based organizations, makes efforts to ensure the health needs of youths, including HIV prevention education, programs and policies implemented throughout Asia and the Pacific region.
59. How many young people with HIV live in Asia and the Pacific area?
A. 3 billion               B. 850 million        C. 100 million           D. 2.1 million
60. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. It’s young people themselves that can defeat HIV.
B. Most cases infected with HIV are young people.
C. Most young people who are infected with HIV are women.
D. Half of the world population is infected with HIV.
61. From the passage we can conclude that ________.
A. more and more young people will be infected with HIV
B. it’s because of not being informed that young people are easy to be infected

Over the last 70 years, researchers have been studying happy and unhappy people and finally found out ten factors that make a difference. Our feelings of well-being at any moment are determined to a certain degree by genes. However,of all the factors, wealth and age are the top two.
Money can buy a degree of happiness. But once you can afford to feed, clothe and house yourself, each extra dollar makes less and less difference.
Researchers find that,on average, wealthier people are happier. But the link between money and happiness is complex. In the past half-century,average income has sharply increased in developed countries, yet happiness levels have remained almost the same.Once your basic needs are met, money only seems to increase happiness if you have more than your friends, neighbors and colleagues.
“Dollars buy status, and status makes people feel better,”conclude some experts, which helps explain why people who can seek status in other ways—scientists or actors, for example—may happily accept relatively poorly-paid jobs.
In a research,Professor Alex Michalos found that the people whose desires—not just for money, but for friends, family, job, health—rose furthest beyond what they already had, tended to be less happy than those who felt a smaller gap(差距).Indeed, the size of the gap predicted happiness about five times better than income alone.“The gap measures just blow away the only measures of income,”says Michalos.
Another factor that has to do with happiness is age.Old age may not be so bad.“Given all the problems of aging, how could the elderly be more satisfied?”asks Professor Laura Carstensen.
In one survey,Carstensen interviewed 184 people between the ages of 18 and 94,and asked them to fill out an emotions questionaire. She found that old people reported positive emotions just as often as young people, but negative emotions much less often.
Why are old people happier? Some scientists suggest older people may expect life to be harder and learn to live with it,or they’re more realistic about their goals, only setting ones that they know they can achieve. But Carstensen thinks that with time running out, older people have learned to focus on things that make them happy and let go of those that don’t.
“People realize not only what they have, but also that what they have cannot last forever,”she says.“A goodbye kiss to a husband or wife at the age of 85,for example, may bring far more complex emotional responses than a similar kiss to a boy or girl friend at the age of 20.”

Want to be a happy married couple? Consider having kids.
A new study found that having children boosts happiness. And the more, literally, the merrier.
But unmarried couples shouldn’t expect to find greater happiness through child-raising.The study, published in the Oct.14 online edition of the Journal of Happiness Studies, suggests that having children has little or no effect on boosting happiness among couples who aren’t hitched(和諧).
The findings contradict previous research that suggested that having more offspring doesn't lead to greater happiness and might even make people less satisfied with their lives. One theory behind the conclusion is that parents don’t receive many rewards in return for the hard work of raising children.
The new study, however, notes that parents say children are one of the most important things in their lives, if not the most important.
The study found that life satisfaction for married people -- women especially -- goes up the more kids they have.Single, separated and co-habiting people, by contrast, report negative experiences.
“One is tempted to advance that children make people rich under the ‘right conditions’ -- a time in life when people feel that they are ready, or at least willing, to enter parenthood,” Dr.Luis Angeles, of the University of Glasgow in Scotland, said in a news release from the journal’s publisher.“This time can come at very different moments for different individuals, but a likely signal of its approach may well be the act of marriage.”

B.The more children the married women have, the more unsatisfied they become.
C.Raising kids can give any person happiness.
D.Without marriage, one woman had better not raise kids.
小題4:In the passage, the underlined part ‘right conditions’ refers to _______.
A.a(chǎn) time when the couple are ready and willing to become parents
B.the situation where the family is rich enough to raise a child
C.the situation where the couple are very happy
D.a(chǎn) time when the couple thinks raising children can boost happiness

Like a growing number of young women in Vietnam’s northern part city of Haiphong, Pham Thi Hue was infected with HIV by her husband, one of the town’s many drug users. But instead of being shamed into silence, as Vietnamese with HIV and AIDS are, the 25-year-old tailor and mother of one went public, appearing on television and at conferences. Her business suffered and her neighbors insulted (辱罵)her, but Hue has now become the public face of Mothers and Wives, an HIV/ AIDS support group established in Haiphong by a Norwegian nongovernmental organization and her neighborhood’s People’s Committee. Last year, she founded a smaller group named after a local flower. People who need advice on treatment or help preparing bodies for burial can dial a hot line and get assistance from able and sympathetic(同情的)HIV victims. “We gather to support each other,” Hue says. “When we are sick, what we need most is encouragement and comfort from people who understand our situation and are willing to share our happiness, as well as our sadness.”
On a hot and damp night last month, Hue welcomed into her small home a very thin woman, also a tailor, who was HIV positive.     You hear this,“No wonder you are fat.All you ever d0 is eat.”You feel sad.“I skip my breakfast and supper.I run every morning and evening. What else can I do?”
Basically you can do nothing.Your genes, not your life habits, determine your weight and your body constantly tries to maintain it.
Albert Stunkard of the University of Pennsylvania found from experiments that“80 percent of the children of two fat parents become fat,as compared with no more than 14.percent of the children of two parents of normal weight.”
How can obese people become thinner through dieting? Well, dieting can be effective.but the health costs are great.
Jules Hirsch,a research physician at Rockefeller University, did a study of eight fat people. They were.given a liquid formula(配方)providing 600 calories a day. After more than 10 weeks, the subjects lost on average 45 kg.But after leaving the hospital, they all regained the weight.
The results were surprising:by metabolic(新陳代謝的)measurement, fat people who lost large amounts of weight seemed like they were starving. They had psychiatric problems. They dreamed of food or of breaking their diet They were anxious and depressed. Some wanted to kill themselves. They hid food in their rooms.
Researchers warn that it is possible that weight reduction doesn’t result in normal weight, but in an abnormal state lust like that of starved non.obese people.
Thin people, however, suffer from the opposite. They have to make a great effort to gain weight  Ethan Sims of the University of Vermont got prisoners to volunteer to gain weight. In four to six months—they ate as much as they could. They succeeded in increasing their weight by 20 to 25 percent. But months after the study ended, they were back to normal weight and stayed there.
This did not mean that people are completely without hope in controlling their weight. It means that those who tend to be fat will have to constantly battle their genetic inheritance(遺傳)if they want to significantly 1ower their weight.
The findings also provide evidence for something scientists thought was true—each person has a comfortable weight range. The range might be as much as 9kg.Someone might weigh 60--69kg without too much effort. But,going above or below the natural weight range is difficult. The body resists by feeling hungry or full and changing.the metabolism to push the weight back to the range it seeks.

Want a glance of the future of health care? Take a look at the way the various networks of people about patient care are being connected to one another, and how this new connectivity is being exploited to deliver medicine to the patient —no matter where he or she may be.
Online doctors offering advice based on normal symptoms(癥狀) are the most obvious example. Increasingly, however, remote diagnosis(遠(yuǎn)程診斷) will be based on real physiological data(生理數(shù)據(jù)) from the actual patient. A group from the University of Kentucky has shown that by using personal data assistance plus a mobile phone, it is perfectly practical to send a patient’s important signs over the telephone. With this kind of equipment, the cry asking whether there was a doctor in the house could well be a thing of the past.
Other medical technology groups are working on applying telemedicine to rural(countryside) care. And at least one team wants to use telemedicine as a tool for disaster need—especially after earthquakes. On the whole, the trend is towards providing global access to medical data and experts’ opinions.
But there is one problem. Bandwidth(寬帶) is the limiting factor for sending complex(復(fù)雜的) medical pictures around the world — CT photos being one of the biggest bandwidth users. Communication satellites may be able to deal with the short-term needs during disasters such as earthquakes or wars. But medicine is looking towards both the second-generation Internet and third-generation mobile phones for the future of remote medical service.
Doctors have met to discuss computer-based tools for medical diagnosis, training and telemedicine. With the falling price of broadband communications, the new technologies should start a new time when telemedicine and the sharing of medical information, experts’ opinions and diagnosis are common.
小題1: The writer chiefly talks about _______.
A.the use of telemedicineB.the on-lined doctors
C.medical care and treatmentD.communication improvement
小題2:The basis of remote diagnosis will be _______.
A.personal data assistance
B.some words of a patient
C.real physiological information
D.medical pictures from the Internet
小題3:Which of the following statements is true according to the text?
A.Patients don’t need doctors in hospitals any more.
B.It is impossible to send a patient’s signs over the telephone.
C.Many teams use telemedicine dealing with disasters now.
D.Broadband communications will become cheaper in the future.
小題4:The “problem” in the fourth paragraph refers to the fact that _______.
A.bandwidth isn’t big enough to send complex medical pictures
B.the second-generation of Internet has not become popular yet
C.communication satellites can only deal with short-term needs
D.there is not enough equipment for spreading the medical care

Meat and vegetables are measured in grams and kilograms. Milk and other liquid foods are measured in liters or milliliters. These units only measure quantity: they do not measure the value of the food to the body. The unit which measures the quality or value of food is the calorie the amount of heat given off by food when it brurns. This measurement tells how much energy a certain food has when it is completely used by the body.
Our bodies use varying(不同程度的) amount of calories. The more exercise we take, the more calories we burn. If we eat food which contains more calories than we use up, then it is possible that we would increase in weight.
