9.Expressions about water are almost as common as water itself.
The expression to be in hot water is a very old expression.Hot water was used five hundred years ago to mean being in trouble.One story says it got that meaning from the custom of throwing extremely hot water down on enemies attacking a castle.
That no longer happens.But we still get in hot water.When we are in hot water,we are in trouble.It can be any kind of trouble---serious or not so serious.A person who breaks a law can be in hot water with the police.A young boy can be in hot water with his mother,if he walks in the house with dirty shoes.
Being in deep water is almost the same as being in hot water.When you are in deep water,you are in a difficult position.
To keep your head above water is a colorful expression that means staying out of debt.A company seeks to keep its head above water during economic hard times.A man who loses his job tries to keep his head above water until he finds a new job.
Water over the dam is another expression about a past event.It is something that is finished.It cannot be changed.The expression comes from the idea that water that has flowed over a dam cannot be brought back again.
Another common expression to hold water,is about the strength or weakness of an idea or opinion that you may be arguing about.It probably comes from a way of testing the condition of a container.If it can hold water,it is strong and has no holes in it.If your argument can hold water,it is strong and does not have any holes.
Throwing cold water also is an expression that deals with ideas or suggestions.It means to not like an idea.For example,you want to buy a new car because the old one has some problems.But your wife throws cold water on the idea,because she says a new car costs too much.

"Fast fashion"means clothes which are inexpensive but look like (26)the latest (late) designs from top fashion houses.One reason for the success of the fast fashion is the rise of the social media.A report found that Millennials (千禧一代) want to wear a variety of clothes in the photos they post on social media.As a result,many businesses which offer trendy and low-cost clothes grow quickly.
However,some Millennials are not happy with the rise of fast fashion.Maxine was tired of always shopping for (27)what was in style.Instead,she wanted to buy fewer clothes she could wear over and over.So Maxine started a"slow fashion"clothing company called Zady.The clothes it sells often feature classic colors and shapes,and are made from natural materials.
The international business H&M,one of the best-known fast fashion brands,has another approach to"slow fashion."It has created a recycling program for clothes,(28)which invites people to bring clothes they no longer want to H&M stores.Shoppers who donate old clothes can receive (29)a discount on new things they buy.After that,H&M does several things with shoppers'old clothes.Some of them are sold again.Some are turned into other useful items.And the rest (30)are reduced(reduce) to fiber (纖維制品) that can be reused as building materials.

20.A refrigerator of the future that tells you what to cook with your leftovers and automatically re-orders fresh food is being designed m the UK.The self-cleaning"refrigerator of the future"will automatically place supermarket home delivery orders when required and move food near its use by date to the front of the shelves.
Researchers hope the fridge could clean itself, cut down on wasted food and offer up recipes, which could be tailored to different countries, cuisines and seasons (調(diào)味品).With the British spending 36 million hours on extra-hour work every year, leaving little time for housework, the refrigerator could help save time during busy modern-day lives. These new developments are oh the way thanks to combined efforts between scientists at the University of Central Lancashire and online supermarket Ocado.
The planned new qualities include the ability for refrigerators to scan their shelves to see what is in store and use this information to both plan meals and automatically place a supermarket food order.
The smart fridge will use"nano-articulated(納米) technology"shelf surfaces, smooth to the touch. The shelf surfaces will have millions of independently controlled micro-tiles (小瓷格) which will move products which soon need to be eaten to the front of the refrigerator.Ultrasound-scanning technology built into the door will allow the refrigerator to"look through"the food on a plate before and after mealtime, meaning it can assess what type and amount of food is wasted.
Dr Simon Somerville,an expert from the University of Central Lancashire, said."Cookbooks are lists of food items. For this purpose the most available information that the refrigerator will have is a set of arrangements that allow a set number of ingredients(佐料) to produce a large number of quite different dishes. The key concept in the successful accomplishment of this process is accurate list tracking (跟蹤)."

17.Advertisers tend to think big and perhaps this is why they're always coming in for criticism.Their critics(批評家)seem to hate them because they have so much money to throw around.Why don't they stop advertising and reduce the price of their goods?After all,it's the consumer who pays.
The poor old consumer!He'd have to pay a great deal more if advertising didn't create mass markets for products.It is precisely because of the heavy advertising that consumer goods are so cheap.But we get the wrong idea if we think the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods.Another equally important function is to inform.A great deal of the knowledge we have about household goods is largely from the advertisements we read.Advertisements introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence of ones we already know about.Supposing you wanted to buy a washing machine,it is more than likely you would obtain details regarding performance,price,etc.,from an advertisement.
Lots of people pretend that they never read advertisements,but this claim may be seriously doubted.It is hardly possible not to read advertisements these days.And what fun they often are,too!Just think what a railway station or a newspaper would be like without advertisements.Would you enjoy gazing at a blank wall or reading railway byelaws while waiting for a train?A cheerful,witty advertisement makes such a difference to a dull wall or a newspaper full of the incidents and disasters.
We must not forget,either,that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets.The fact that we pay so little for our daily paper,or can enjoy so many broadcast programmers is due entirely to the money spent by advertisers.Just think what a newspaper would cost if we had to pay its full price!
Another thing we mustn't forget is the"small ads."What a tremendously useful service they perform for the community!Just about anything can be accomplished through these columns.For instance,you can find a job,buy or sell a house,announce a birth,marriage or death in what used to be called the"hatch,match and dispatch"column(欄目) but by far the most fascinating section is the personal or"agony"column.No other item in a newspaper provides such entertaining reading or offers such a deep insight into human nature.It's the best advertisement for advertising there is!

48.What is the main idea of this passage?C
A.Advertisements steal money from our pockets
B.The critics get the wrong idea of advertisements.
C.Advertisers perform a useful service to communities.
D.Advertisements are everywhere.
49.What is the attitude of the author toward advertisements?A
A.He appreciates the role of advertisements.
B.He doubts the effect of advertisements.
C.He believes what is said in advertisements.
D.He complains too many advertisements in daily life.
50.Which of the following is Not True?B
A.The personal or"agony"column makes us know more about human nature.
B.The only purpose of advertising is to sell goods.
C.A newspaper will cost us more if there is no advertisement on it.
D.Advertisement makes our life colorful.
51.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?D
A.      B.       C.     D.
 ( ①=Paragraph 1,②=paragraph 2,③=paragraph 3,④=paragraph 4   ⑤=paragraph 5 )

Despite the installation in Mount Everest,telecom services cover less than one-third of the 28million people of Nepal,one of the poorest countries in the world.
TeliaSonera said it planned to invest $ 100million in the next year to ensure that mobile coverage increases to more than 90per cent of the Himalayan nation's population.
The 3G network on Mount Everest puts TeliaSonera ahead of state-controlled Nepal Telecom,Indian-owned United Telecom and China Mobile.
Around 3,000people have climbed to the Everest summit since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first people to conquer the peak in 1953.

1.Although Paris is often considered the city of romance, close to a million adults who call it home are single. Many single people say that France's capital is one of the most difficult places to meet people. The complaints(抱怨)of this lonely group have inspired a new phenomenon known as"supermarket dating."At Galerie Lafayette Gourmet, singles can shop for more than just the items on their grocery list. They can look for someone who has blue eyes, brown hair, and is 1.8 meters tall,or whatever may be on their romantic shopping list.
At this paris location, single people of all ages can schedule their shopping for Thursday nights between 6:30 and 9:00 p.m.When they walk through the door, they pick up a purple basket to advise that they are looking for love. They try to arrive early because the baskets disappear quickly, and then they have to wait in line for their turn to wander the store aisles(過道).
With purple baskets in hand, shoppers can consider their romantic options while they pick out their groceries. When they are ready to pay, they can go to the checkout line for singles who want to chat.
Most of the people who look for love in the supermarket are skeptical of Internet dating. They know that it is easy to embellish(美化)one's appearance or to lie about one's age over the Internet. The supermarket,on the other hand,is considered a safe and casual environment in which to meet a potential match. In addition, what one finds in another's grocery basket can say a thing or two about that person's character or intentions.Buying pet food can be a man's way of showing a potential match that he has a sensitive side.Women who fill their baskets with low-fat food show their healthy style of living. These ways it's possible to find much more than food at a grocery store.

18.Zoos divide opinion:there are those who think it is cruel (殘忍的) to keep animals locked up while others believe zoos are important for the survival of endangered species.
To think that zoos imprison animals is to misunderstand what zoos are about.Without zoos many of the creatures we love and admire would no longer exist.Every single day, over one hundred animal species vanish.Scientists predict that as early as 2050 one quarter of the Earth's species will become extinct(絕種的).
Some animals are in danger because they are hunted.Worriedly, the population of tigers has already fallen by ninety-five percent.Other species are in danger because of a lack of food. For example, there are fewer than 1300 giant pandas left in the wild.
Zoos have special breeding programs to help those animals in danger. These breeding programs are proving very successful. As Irene Shapiro from Zoo and Wildlife Support says,"the Puerto Rican Parrot has grown in numbers from just thirteen to about eighty-five and the Golden Lion Tamarin Monkey, which has almost died out twenty years ago,has been reintroduced back into the wild."
Unfortunately, not everyone understands this important role zoos play. For example,Brian Featherstone from the Anti-Zoo Forum says,"I can't believe we take animals from the wild and put them in cages for the entertainment of the public! We should view them on film or TV in their natural environment."
However, this misses the point.A zoo does more than display animals to the public. It ensures their survival.Without zoos you would not be able to see many of these animals on TV or anywhere else!
67.What's the writer's attitude towards zoos?C
A.He shows no opinion either for or against them.
B.He thinks that they are unnecessary and cruel.
C.He believes they play an important environmental role.
D.He expresses a desire that more of them be built.

70.According to the writer, the most important function of the zoo is toC.
A.make a lot of money

19.Modern zoos are different from those built fifty years ago.At that time zoos were places where people could go to see animals from many parts of the world.The animals lived in cages with iron bars.Although the zoo keepers took good care of them,many of the animals did not feel comfortable,and they often fell ill.

Modern zoos not only show animals to visitors,but also keep and save rare animals.For this reason,fifty years from now,the grandchildren of today's visitors will be able to enjoy watching these animals.
