科目:高中英語 來源:2015-2016學(xué)年貴州思南中學(xué)高二下第二次月考英語卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

In a book called Magnificent Obsession,by Lloyd C.Douglas,a description is given of people helping others but doing it secretly. When difficult problems worried an individual, friends nearby would meet to discuss possible solution without the individual knowing their actions. When a solution was agreed upon, one or two of the friends would carry out the plan and solve the problems secretly,to the great delight of the worried individual. The helpers would stand by privately, contented with their success. No reward was given to the problem solvers, not even a sincere “thank you”,because they were never known.

This concept is popular today but in a different way.The phrase “pay_it_forward” is now used when one person helps another. However, the person being helped may not be able to repay the person or group that helped them.So rather than return the favor to their helpers, they are supposed to help someone else in the future, which means they pay it forward. It is the sense of responsibility that makes us want to give back in equal measure to the one who has helped us.But,in this case, the responsibility turns to helping someone in the future.

Suppose your elderly grandmother pays part of your schooling. She may tell you there is no need to repay her because it is a gift from someone who loves you very much.Nothing would please her more than to have you use her money to get a good education.

You may never be able to repay her for such a gift. However, she not only gave you some money, but she provided you with an example that you should also help other people who need it.

People with serious needs are everywhere. Many are children who need better clothes, more books and even better schools. Some are elderly people who can’t afford their medicine or a doctor’s care.Consider how you can “pay it forward”rather than pay money back to your grandmother.

1.The helpers in the book Magnificent Obsession were not rewarded because________.

A.they hadn’t solved the problems thoroughly

B.they had solved the problems secretly

C.they were friends of the worried individual

D.they expected to be paid back in the future

2.The underlined words “pay it forward” in Paragraph 2 mean________.

A.to repay someone who has helped you

B.to pay someone else who needs help

C.to help someone who has helped you

D.to help someone else who needs help

3.What does the writer suggest with the example of “your elderly grandmother”?

A.We should learn to respect our grandparents.

B.We should work hard to get a good education.

C.We should also lend a hand to other people in need of help.

D.We should never forget to repay people for their help.

4.By writing the passage, the author wishes people in the world to be________.

A.unselfish B.mysterious

C.honest D.Unforgettable

Sharks have lived in the oceans for over 450 million years. There are now about 360 species of sharks, whose size, behavior, and other characteristics differ widely.

Sharks range in size from the 0.1 meter long dwarf-dog shark to the 18-metre long whale shark — the world’s biggest fish. The whale shark, like two other large shark species — the basking shark and the megamouth shark — are harmless to people because they feed on plants and small aquatic animals.

Sharks have extremely sensitive sense organs. Some sharks can detect the scent(氣味) of decaying fish or blood even when it is diluted(稀釋) to only one part per million parts of seawater. They can probably hear underwater sounds that originate as far as 3 kilometers away and can tell the direction from which underwater sounds are coming.

Sharks are key predators(肉食動物) in the world’s oceans, helping control the numbers of many other ocean predators. Without sharks, the oceans would be overcrowded with dead and dying fish.

Every year, we catch and kill over 100 million sharks, mostly for food and for their fins. Dried shark fins are used to make shark fin soup, which makes a profit for the sellers. Other sharks are killed for sport and out of fear. Sharks are vulnerable to overfishing because it takes most species 10 to 15 years to begin reproducing and they produce only a few offspring.

Influenced by movies and popular novels, most people see sharks as people-eating monsters. This is far from the truth. Every year, a few types of sharks injure about 100 people worldwide and kill about 25. Most attacks are by great white sharks, which often feed on sea lions and other marine mammals. They sometimes mistake human swimmers for their normal prey, especially if they are wearing black wet suits.

If you are a typical ocean-goer, your chances of being killed by an unprovoked(無緣無故的) attack by a shark are about 1 in 100 million. You are more likely to be killed by a pig than by a shark.

Sharks help save human lives. In addition to providing people with food, they are helping us learn how to fight cancer, bacteria and viruses. Sharks are very healthy and have aging processes similar to ours. Their highly effective immune system allows wounds to heal quickly without becoming infected, and their blood is being studied in connection with AIDS research.

Sharks are among the few animals in the world that almost never get cancer and eye cataracts. Understanding why can help us improve human health. Chemicals extracted from shark cartilage(軟骨) have killed cancerous tumors in laboratory animals, and these chemicals may someday help prolong our life.

Sharks are needed in the world’s ocean ecosystems. Although they don’t need us, we need them. We are much more dangerous to sharks than they are to us. For every shark that bites a person, we kill one million sharks.

1.Which statement best expresses the main idea of the article?

A. There are many different species of sharks, but only a few of them are dangerous to humans.

B. Sharks are important to the ocean ecosystem and they are a valuable resource for humans.

C. Although some sharks are dangerous to humans, they can help save human lives.

D. Sharks always eat small fishes and they are an essential part of the world’s oceans.

2.Which question is NOT answered in the article?

A. How long does a shark live?

B. How many people are killed by sharks each year?

C. Why are sharks important in medical research?

D. What do humans kill sharks for?

3.It can be inferred from the passage that ______________.

A. movies have given people the wrong impression of sharks

B. most sharks are dangerous to humans

C. sharks will attack anyone who is wearing black

D. it is very likely that ocean-goers will be killed by a shark

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.

___1.___ Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.

For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷爾蒙). They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc. __2.___

Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.

___3.__ They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “___4.___ Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”

Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. ___5.___
