Henry Ford grew up on an un-electrified farm, and as a young man he followed Edison's career as the inventor became a national role model.Ford took a job at the Edison Illuminating Company working his way up to chief engineer.
In 1896 Ford was thirty-three and, though still working for Edison Co.,he had created his first experimental automobile the Ford Quadricycle2 during his off-time. At an Edison company party in New York, Ford had his first chance to meet his hero Edison and was able to explain his new automobile to the great inventor. Edison was impressed. Edison is said to have slammed his fist down and shouted ¨Young man, that's the thing! You have it! Your car is self-contained and carries its own power plant." Edison himself had been working on the idea, but had only been considering electricity as the power source, so the idea of a gas engine was a somewhat new one.
The words comforted Ford greatly, who immediately set out building a second car which was to become the Model-T.6.The two men became f'ast friends and would go on camping trips together. When Edison later became limited to a wheelchair, Ford brought an extra one to his house so they could race.At the 50th anniversary of the invention of light-bulb, Ford honored Edison. When Edison spoke, he ended his speech directed at Ford:“ As to Henry Ford, words fail to express my feelings.I can only say that he is my friend." Therefore it is no surprise that Ford wanted something to remember Edison by after he passed away in 1931.
Once, Ford asked Thomas Edison's son Charles to sit by the dying inventor's bedside and hold a test tube next to his father's mouth to catch his final breath. Ford was a man with many strange behaviors( as was Edison)including some interest in reanimation and spiritualism(夏活通靈術(shù))and some say that he was attempting to catch Edison's soul as it escaped his body in hopes of later bringing the inventor back to life.
The test tube itself didn't turn up until 1950 when it was listed in the Ford possessions after Clara Ford's passing away, and then lost again until 1978 when it was discovered in an exhibit Entitled “Henry Ford-A Personal History" in the Henry Ford Museum. It would then be discovered that the tube was labeled “Edison's Last Breath".
There is a further mystery of this “l(fā)ast breath" test tube. It would seem as if Edison had quite a last breath indeed, as the Edison Estate holds a collection of 42 test tubes all supposedly containing Edison's last breath.
Regardless of the excitement over the last breath, the test tube is quite touching in its meaning.Although both men were known for all sorts of poor behavior towards .their loved ones and mistreatment of employees, between them at least, there was clearly a deep respect and admiration.

Picky eaters may have good reasons for their behaviour. No matter why your child has become picky, how you handle the situation can affect his or her future. Therefore, you should know the following reasons for picky children first of all.
Neophobia is common in children; it often happens at the dinner table. Some children just refuse to try new food because they don’t know what it will taste like, while others dislike new food before even smelling it. Some children take it to the extreme(極端) and will only eat a few foods that they like. Psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Capaldi says that, by the time children reach the age of two, they have formed their own eating habits that they don’t want to be disturbed by new offerings at the table.
A newly published study led by Dr. Lucy Cooke of University College London showed that picky eating in children results from genetic(遺傳的) and environmental causes. The research, which followed the eating habits of 5,390 pairs of twins between the ages of 8 and 11, found that about 75% of the neophobia in the children was from their parents, while 25% was due to the influence of environment.
Children grow at a high speed during their first year, but that fast-paced growth tends to slow down by their second year. When children are not experiencing one of those fast growth periods, their body needs less energy; and that results in a smaller appetite(胃口). When children are not hungry, they tend to enjoy only food they like. They refuse new food and food that is not their favourite. Some children will limit the amount of food to only one kind, like hamburgers or pancakes, leaving all the other foods untouched.
In some cases, many real reasons why a child behaves as a picky eater exist. About 5% of children who are 10 years of age or younger have some type of neurological dysfunction(神經(jīng)機(jī)能障礙) that influences their eating habits. These children may be easily hurt by some special smells, or their brain may not be able to process such sensory information properly.
1.The underlined word “Neophobia”in Paragraph 2 probably means_________.
A.the fear of something new or unknown
B.the worry about the amount of new food
C.the feeling of eating at the dinner table
D.the fear of eating tasty food

A.It paid more attention to the environmental effects on children’s eating habits.
B.It followed the eating habits of 5,390 children aged between 8 and 11.
C.It showed that genetics greatly affect children’s eating habits.
D.It suggested that parents should have good eating habits.
3.The fourth paragraph mainly tells us that_______.
A.children’s growth speed stays the same in the first two years
B.children develop their own diet when they grow up
C.children tends to eat less when they grow up
D.children’s growth has an effect on their diet
4.The reason mentioned in the last paragraph has something to do with a child’s_______.

China’s new buzzword, tuhao, may be in next year’s Oxford English Dictionary.
“If its influence continues, it is very likely to appear on our updated list of words, ” said Julie Kleeman, project manager with the editing team.
In Chinese, tu means uncouth(粗野的) and hao means rich. It has traditionally been referred to rich people who throw their weight around in China’s rural areas. In recent years, people borrowed the term to describe those who spend money in an unreasonable manner. The word gained acceptance in September with the launch(上市) of Apple’s new gold-colored iPhone, an item loved by China’s rich people. The color became known as “tuhao gold”. The word is now often used by the online community to refer to people who have the cash but lack the class to go with it.
Kleeman also mentioned two other Chinese words—dama and hukou—which may also be taken in the dictionary. Hukou means household registration(登記) in Chinese and has been widely used.
Dama, meaning middle-aged women, was first used in the Western media by the Wall Street Journal in May when thousands of Chinese women were buying up record number of gold. They were the driving force in the global gold market between April and June when the gold prices had gone down.
“We have nearly 120 Chinese-linked words now in Oxford English Dictionary, ” she said. Some of them are: Guanxi, literally meaning “connection”, is the system of social networks and influential relationships which promote business and other dealings. Taikonaut is a mix of taikong, meaning outer space, and astronaut.
The new words will be first uploaded on the official website before the dictionaries arrive. The online version is also renewed every three months. “It at least broke our old rules. It used to take 10 years to include a new word but now we keep the pace with the era, ” according to John Simpson.
1.What does “Tuhao” mean now?
A. The rich who like iPhone made of gold.
B. The people who have power in the countryside.
C. The people who spend money reasonably.
D. The rich who find no class to belong to.
2.Why is the word “Dama” popular now?
A. They bought gold in the global market.
B. They are wealthy middle-aged women.
C. They brought the gold prices down.
D. They worked on the Wall Street.
3.According to John, the Oxford English Dictionary__________.
A. updates its new version every three months
B. takes 10 years to include a new word now
C. speeds up its acceptance of new words
D. has its online version to collect new words

(Reuters) --- A stampede killed at least 36 people during New Year's Eve celebrations in Shanghai, authorities said, but the police denied reports that it was caused by people rushing to pick up fake money thrown from a building overlooking the city's famous waterfront.
It was the worst disaster in the modern city since 58 died in an apartment building fire in 2010.
The cause of the crush has still to be confirmed, though state media and some witnesses have said it was at least partly aroused when people rushed to pick up coupons that looked like bank notes.
A man named Wu said the fake money had been thrown down from a bar above the street as part of the celebrations.
"This incident happened after the stampede," police said in a brief statement, without saying what the real cause was.
Another witness said there had been a problem away from the area where the fake bills were thrown, with people trying to get on to a raised platform overlooking the river.
Xinhua news agency said that people had been trampled on after falling down on the steps up to the platform.
Authorities had shown some concern about crowd control in the days leading up to New Year's Eve. They recently canceled an annual 3D laser show on the Bund, which last year attracted as many as 300,000 people.
On New Year's Eve, Beijing also canceled a countdown event in the central business district, Chinese media said, due to police fears about overcrowding.
The Shanghai government said on its official microblog that an inquiry had begun, and that all other New Year events had been canceled.
In 2004, 37 people died in a stampede in northern Beijing, on a bridge at a scenic spot, during the Lunar New Year holiday.
1.According to the passage, why did people go to the Bund?
A. To meet their old friends and relatives.
B. To pick up bank notes.
C. To watch an annual 3D laser show.
D. To celebrate the New Year’s Eve.
2.Which of the following statements is true from the passage?
A. The incident had connection with the throwing of fake money.
B. People got on the platform to watch a countdown event.
C. The cause of the crush is being looked into.
D. The disaster during the New Year’s Eve was the worst in Shanghai.
3.What can be inferred according to the passage?
A. The local government had shown their worry about overcrowding.
B. People like 3D laser show better than any other events.
C. Some possible measures had been taken by authorities.
D. The celebrations in Beijing were influenced by this stampede.
4.What’s the passage about?
A. A countdown event in Beijing.
B. A laser show on the Bund.
C. An apartment fire in Shanghai.
D. A stampede on New Year’s Eve in Shanghai.
