Showrooming is something I've done.I will go to a shop to see,touch and try out products but then go home and buy them online at a knock-down price.I'm not alone in doing this.Research by a company called Foolproof,found 24%of people showroomed while Christmas shopping in 2013.

But does this mean technology will kill shops?Certainly shops will change.They will have to offer more competitive prices or encourage people to buy more by giving in-store discounts or free gifts.
We mustn't forget that buying in a shop means you can get expert advice from the sales assistant and you can get good aftercare. It's good to speak to a real human rather than look at a faceless computer screen but at least by showrooming, you get the best of both worlds!

18.Keeping a pet cat puts owners at a greater risk of going blind,but a dog appears to protect eyesight,a new study suggests.
Scientists have discovered that dogs and cats carry antigens(杭原)which can cause different immune responses(免疫反應(yīng))in humans. While the allergen(過(guò)敏原)which dogs carry reduces the chance of developing glaucoma(青光眼)一the second leading cause of blindness in the UK---owning a cat nearly doubles the risk of getting the eye disease.
Many pet owners suffer allergic reactions to their pets but still choose to keep them.However,the new study suggests that even a small immune response could lead to blindness.The study by the University of California,Los Angeles, found that cat owners who reacted to their pet allergen had a 90percent increased risk of glaucoma compared with non-pet owners.But dog owners were 20per-cent less likely to get the disease.
Keeping a dog also has the added benefit that owners are outside more which helps to protect against short-sightedness.
"Not only is a dog man's best friend,he may also save your sight,"said British laser eye surgeon Dr David Allamby."Cats could cause our immune system to react in a way that leads eyes to the development of glaucoma.Exposure(接觸)to dogs appears to be linked to the opposite ef-feet and could be protective against the disease."
The researchers believe that dogs are healthier for humans because they spend more time out-doors"The protective effect of dogs could be due to their natural antigens in their dead skin,but might also be because they spend more time outdoors and are happy to get dirty, whereas cats are cleaner animals."said Dr Anne Coleman,of University of California,Los Angeles.
21.The purpose of the text is toC
A.make pet dogs popular.
B.a(chǎn)dvise people to abandon their cats.
C.share a new study result.

Off the coast of Hawaii’s Big Island swim masses of colorful tropical fish. Some of these fish will be caught and sold, ending up in aquariums around the world. Is the industry putting populations of the fish at risk?

Scientists who have studied the Big Island fishery say it is well managed. Rules put in place more than 15 years ago have helped to protect the fish. Along 35% of the coastline, for example, fish collecting is banned. Two years ago, the state cut the number of fish species for the aquarium trade from hundreds to just 40.

Conservationist Robert Wintner objects to the findings. Wintner, who owns snorkel shops across Hawaii, started the Snorkel Bob Foundation to protect the island’s coral reefs(珊瑚礁). He says he simply doesn’t see yellow tang(刺尾魚)in the protected areas. “There should be millions of them,” he says. “Where are they?”

Wintner says people believe the numbers in reports. But few people have actually dived into the coral reefs to see for themselves how many fish can be found there. According to Wintner, the coral reefs along the coast should be filled with yellow tang, but they are “virtually empty”. Empty reefs are not good for tourism, Wintner points out, which brings out $800 million yearly. By contrast, the aquarium-fish trade brings out just $2 million yearly.

1.According to Robert Wintner, ________.

A. the yellow tang is sold merely for both food and the aquarium industry

B. there are millions of yellow tang off Hawaii’s Big Island

C. the yellow tang’s population off Hawaii coast is large

D. what the recent report says is wrong

2.Which of the following is caused by the empty reefs?

A. Worse tourism B. More fish death

C. More hungry people D. Less swimming events

3.What can be the best title for the text?

A. Who will Win the Debate?

B. Is the Tropical Fish Healthy?

C. How Should We Protect Tropical Fish?

D. Should the Sale of Tropical Fish be Banned?

Hi Maz and Bobby,

I don't know what you're up to this Sunday, but if you're at a loose end, come over to my place. We're going to have a barbecue.

Tom

Hi Tom,

Thanks mate, but I'm completely snowed under at the moment. I have to write an essay by Monday afternoon, so I'll be working all weekend. I've got nothing arranged for the following weekend though, so maybe we can meet then? I'll call you later.

Bobby

Dear Tom,

Like Bobby, I'm a bit tied up tomorrow. Unfortunately, I have to go to my great uncle's house for a family lunch. He was ill so we thought it might not happen, but it looks as if it's going ahead. I really can't get out of it because it's the old man's 60th birthday and most of the family will probably be there.

Maz

Ok you guys,

I'm calling off the barbecue. Judging from the grey sky, it's going to rain all weekend anyway. Maybe you'll have done your various duties by the end of the evening and we can go for a drink instead! If you want to relax, I'll be in The Hart, a pub on King Street. Gloria and I are meeting there at about 8:30, as long as nothing else pops up! Don't forget it closes at 10:30 on Sundays.

Ok, time to put my feet up and take it easy!

Later,

Tom

4.WASHINGTON,Nov.25 (Xinhua)--Air pollution is a major risk factor for heart disease,and women with diabetes (糖尿病) may be more likely to be influenced by its effects than others,a long-term U.S.study said Wednesday.
The study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, found that women with diabetes who are exposed (暴露) to air pollution for long periods may have a much higher risk for heart disease.
"We didn't expect diabetes to be the strongest factor in determining susceptibility (敏感性),"said the lead author Jaime Hart,an epidemiologist at the Boston-based Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard T.H.Chan School of Public Health.
"We looked at age, family history of heart disease, weight, smoking status and areas of the country but diabetes was the most consistent across diseases and across different size fractions of particulate matter (PM),"Hart said.
The research team explored data from more than 100,000participants in a long-term study called the Nurses'Health Study,looking at rates of heart disease,specifically rates of stroke.
They assessed long-term exposure to three different sizes of particulate matter air pollution from 1989to 2006:Fine particulate pollutant smaller than 2.5thousandths of a millimeter in diameter (PM2.5),PM10and PM2.5-10.PM10includes both PM2.5and PM2.5-10.
While all women had small increases in risk of heart events with more air pollution exposure, the increased risk was statistically significant for women with diabetes.
According to the team,an increase of 10micrograms per cubic meter of air pollution in PM2.5,PM2.5-10and PM 10will raise a woman's risk of heart disease by 44percent,17percent and 19percent,separately,if she had type 2diabetes.
The team found that these effects were greater among women 70and older and obese women.
Since the study participants were mostly white women of middle-and upper-socioeconomic status,further research will be needed to determine if these patterns are also seen in men and in racially and socioeconomically diverse populations,they added.

61.According to the study,women with diabetes may be more likely to be affected byB.
A.a(chǎn) risk factor      B.a(chǎn)ir pollution      C.heart disease      D.a(chǎn)reas
62.Which of the following was not involved in the study?C
A.Age.B.Weight.C.Height.D.Smoking status.
63.What can we learn from the passage?B
A.It is not necessary to do further research on men.
B.Air pollution puts women with diabetes at higher heart risk.
C.Most participants were women who were over 70years old.
D.The increase of PM per cubic meter has no effect on women's health.
