Sydney

As we all know, the 2000 Olympic Games were held in Sydney. Have you been to Sydney? What does it look like?

Sydney is one of Australia's oldest, largest and liveliest cities with a population of more than three million. It is a colorful, modern city but it is also a natural beauty with green park land and perhaps the world's most beautiful deep-water harbor.

There are all kinds of restaurants, theatres, nightclubs and sports facilities(設(shè)施;場(chǎng)所).      The koala. one of Australia's most treasured creatures, is introuble.
Affected by habitat (棲居地) loss and climate change, like many other uniquely Australian animals, koalas are being squeezed into smaller regions. But at present, it is a deadly disease, a somewhat silent killer that causes a further decline in the koala population, that is worrying many scientists about the fate of the koala.
The killer is Chlamydia, which has caused symptoms in up to 50 percent of the wild koalas, with probably even more infected (感染) but not showing symptoms. It has been particularly severe in Queensland, where nearly all koalas are infected. The disease causes many symptoms including eye infections, which can lead to blindness, making it difficult for them to find their primary food.
Treating Chlamydia in wild koalas is a challenge. There is no treatment available for it. Only a small percentage of the animals can be treated successfully and returned
to the wild. Besides, there is no national plan in Australia to save the koala;it is up to each region to make management plans for its koala population.
The good news is that researchers are working to test a vaccine (疫苗) that would help prevent further spread. If all goes well, plans can be carried out to distribute the vaccil1e more widely. But it's impossible to vaccinate all wild koalas.
Another possibility would be to make vaccine distribution a routi11e part of treatment for the thousands of koalas brought into care centers every year after they are injured by cars or dogs.
While it is a combination of problems that are affecting the wild koala population, many expects believe this vaccine would be an important step in helping koalas survive longer. It may buy enough time to give researchers a chance to solve some of the other problems facing Australia's koalas.
1. Which isn't considered the main cause of koa1a's population decline?
A. A deadly disease.

3. The underlined word "it" in the fourth paragraph probably refers to      .
A. the koala
B. Chlamydia
C. national plan

4. We can learn from the text that the vaccine      .
A. would cure the killer Chlamydia quite effectively
B. would only be distributed in koala care centers
C. has already been put into practical use in Australia
D. cannot be distributed to all the infected koalas
5. It can be inferred from the text that           .
A. a national plan for saving koalas will be made soon in Australia

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的選項(xiàng)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。

“Sam” the koala, the most famous survivor of Australia's worst-ever wildfires, is healing well thanks to the efforts of caretakers at a rescue—and she even has a new boyfriend, “Bob”

Sam, who captured hearts around the world after she was photographed drinking from a firefighter's water bottle, has also won the affection of "Bob", another koala whose paws were scorched, caretaker Lynn Raymond said Thursday.

Neither koala is likely to be healthy enough for release for at least four months, and both are being comforted by caretakers for their scorched paws every few hours.

Global interest in the fate of Sam has been intense since a photograph of firefighter David Tree offering her a bottle of water in a burned-out forest was splashed across the Internet, in newspapers and on television broadcasts. The telephone at the shelter has rung continually with callers eager for update on the creature's condition.

“It's crazy,” Raymond said with a laugh. "(But) everybody has been absolutely wonderful."

Sam was found moving on scorched paws by a fire patrol Sunday. Tree then held out a bottle of water for her to drink, which she eagerly accepted, holding Tree's hand as he poured water into her mouth.

After suffering second-and-third-degree burns to her paws, Sam has been sharing a cage with Bob, who took an immediate interest in her when she arrived on Sunday.

Both Sam and Bob were given painkillers when they first arrived, but they're off the drugs now. The two are still receiving antibiotics(抗生素)and have their bandages changed regularly to avoid infections.

The koalas are likely to be in the shelter at least four months, depending on how quickly their burns heal.
