Integrity
Integrity is the quality of being honest and strong about what you believe to be right. The concept of integrity has played a key role in moral philosophy throughout history and is promoted in all societies because of its importance to social relations. Individual integrity is vital to society, one that enables people to make use of their capacity for critical reflection, does not force people to take up particular roles and does not encourage individuals to betray each other. Besides, societies can be favorable to the development of individual integrity.
Individual integrity can lift up the spirits of the entire society. It can shape the lives of people living in a particular society, the lives of all fellow people and, in its broadest sense, even the destiny(命運) of a nation. By contrast, if those living in the society are corrupt, it could have bad effects, jeopardizing the healthy morality of the society.
On the other hand, a society can be favorable to the development of individual integrity. Society expects and requires integrity. A society consisting of people of integrity, and people who never compromise on their principles, could have a positive mark on the personal development of its members. Being a part of such a morally lively community could serve as a basis for absorbing traits of good character. This could be of a distinct advantage to any individuals in the society.
However, some social structures are of the wrong sort for some individuals to pursue(追求) integrity. If that is the case, we have to ask questions about the moral nature of society first before raising questions about individual integrity. Questions about integrity may turn out to be about what kind of society it is, rather than about the relationship between individual interests and characteristics of a society. The pursuit of adequate individual integrity often depends, not so much on understanding who one is and what one believes and is committed to, but rather understanding what one’s society is and imagining what it could be.
Under no circumstances can we underestimate the importance of human integrity in a society. People, who are honest, trustworthy, compassionate and caring, are the factors decisive in the growth of individuals as well as the development of a society.

Cheerleading is the fastest growing girls' sport, yet more than half of Americans do not believe it is a sport. Actually, competitive cheerleading is a sport.
A sport is a “physical activity against/with an opponent, governed by rules and conditions under which a winner is declared, and the primary purpose of the competition is a comparison of the relative skills of the participants. "Because cheerleading follows these guidelines, it is a sport.
Competitive cheerleading includes lots of physical activities. Like gymnasts, cheerleaders must learn to tumble (翻滾) . They perform lifts and tosses. This is where the "flied' are thrown in the air, held by "bases" in different positions that require strength and cooperation with other teammates.
Just as basketball and football have guidelines for competitive play, so does competitive cheerleading. The whole routine has to be completed in less than 3 minutes and 15 seconds and the cheerleaders are required to stay within a certain area.
Competitive cheerleaders' goal is to be the best. Just like gymnasts, they are awarded points for difficulty, creativity and sharpness. The more difficult a mount, the sharper the motions, the better the score. Cheerleading is a team sport so without cooperation, first place is out of reach.
Cheerleading is the number-one cause of serious sports injuries to women. Emergency room visits for cheerleading are five times the number of those for any other sport, partially because they do not wear protective gear (特定活動的服裝、設(shè)別). While many athletes are equipped with hip pads or helmets, smiling cheerleaders are tossed into the air and spiral down into the arms of trusted teammates. The fliers must remain tight at all times so that their bases can catch them safely. Also, because cheerleading is not yet recognized as a sport by many schools, neither proper matting nor high enough ceilings are provided to ensure safety. Instead, the girls use whatever space is available. More recognition of competitive cheerleading as a sport would decrease the number of injuries.
So why do many Americans not think cheerleading is a sport? Some people argue that cheerleaders are just "flirts in skirts" with their only job to entertain the crowd, but cheerleaders today work just as hard as other athletes.
Hopefully, cheerleading will become as well-known a sport as football and basketball, and even appear in the Olympics since cheerleaders are just as athletic and physically fit as those involved in the more accepted sports.
1.What does the underlined word "bases" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Strength and cooperation.
B. Lifts and tosses.
C. Supporting teammates.
D. Physical activities
2.Gymnasts are mentioned in the passage to _________.
A. explain the dangers of cheerleading
B. show their similarities with cheerleaders
C. suggest cheerleaders learn to do gymnastics
D. present the guidelines of gymnastic movements
3.It can be learned from the passage that cheerleading ________
A. is a good sport for all people
B. lacks necessary guidelines to follow
C. is more than a form of entertainment
D. enjoys greater popularity than other sports
4.This passage is written mainly to
A. attract more girls to cheerleading
B. draw people's attention to cheerleading
C. call for more recognition of competitive cheerleading as a sport
D. criticize some Americans who do not think cheerleading as a sport

Some people think if you are happy, you are blind to reality. But when we research it, happiness actually raises every single business and educational outcome for the brain. How did we miss this? Why do we have these social misunderstandings about happiness? Because we assumed you were average. When we study people, scientists are often interested in what the average is.
Many people think happiness is genetic. That’s only half the story, because the average person does not fight their genes. When we stop studying the average and begin researching positive outliers —people who are above average for a positive aspect like optimism or intelligence —a wildly different picture appears. Our daily decisions and habits have a huge impact upon both our levels of happiness and success.
Scientifically, happiness is a choice. It is a choice about where your single processor brain will devote its limited resources as you process the world. If you scan for the negative first, your brain really has no resources left over to see the things you are grateful for or the meaning embedded(嵌入) in your work. But if you scan the world for the positive, you start to acquire an amazing advantage.
I wrote the cover story for the Harvard Business Review magazine on “Happiness Leads to Profits.” Based on my article called “Positive Intelligence” and my research in The Happiness Advantage, I summarized our researched conclusion: the single greatest advantage in the modern economy is a happy and busy workforce.
A decade of research in the business world proves that happiness raises nearly every business and educational outcome: increasing sales by 37%, productivity by 31%, and accuracy on tasks by 19%, as well as a number of health and quality-of-life improvements.
1.The underlined word “this” in the first paragraph refers to .
A. the fact that people are happy
B. the connection between happiness and educational outcome
C. the fact that people often misunderstand happiness
D. the fact that most people are average
2.What can we learn from the passage?
A. Scientists are only interested in what the average is.
B. You can choose to be happy or not.
C. The average are not happy at all.
D. Our decisions and habits have nothing to do with happiness.
3.Why does the writer mention his articles and research?
A. To advertise himself.
B. To arouse the readers’ interest.
C. To support his point about happiness.
D. To attract the readers to read his articles.
4.What is the author’s purpose of writing this article?
A. To explain what is happiness.
B. To describe the misunderstandings about happiness.
C. To show people the importance of happiness.
D. To make the point that happiness promotes business and educational outcome.

Laziness is a state of inaction. It is something that you do, not something that you are. Being lazy means you have no motivation to do anything. Many people make the mistake that they view themselves as lazy.
Lazy people are often seen as useless. They are the ones who don’t do anything. They can be seen as underachievers or even bums(廢物). This can be a child or an adult. You can view a student who never studies as lazy. You can see an employee who doesn’t do his work as lazy. In all of these cases, what the lazy person is doing is being lazy. But are they really being lazy or are they acting lazy?
There is a huge different between saying you act lazy sometimes and you are a lazy person. One is suggesting that your laziness is temporary while the other suggests that it’s permanent. This is the myth of laziness. People who are lazy aren’t; they simply are people who are temporarily acting that way.
So that causes a person to be inactive? The answer is a lack of goals. If you give someone a good enough reason to do something, they will do it. People who don’t seem to do anything just haven’t found a good enough reason to do something. Lazy students don’t study because they don’t see the point in studying. If you give them a reason, a strong enough reason, they will take action.
For example, if you are too lazy to go to the gym, would you go if someone offered you a million dollars to go? If you are too lazy to go to clean out the garage, would someone pointing a gun to your head help you take action? The reason can be positive or negative as long as it’s strong enough to induce(引起)action.
To motivate someone who is lazy, what you need to do is to help them find purpose and enough reasons to work towards a certain goal.
1.According to the passage, who can be viewed as acting lazy?
A. A student who always cheats out the garage.
B. A husband who never cleans out the garage.
C. A clerk who si always scolded for being useless.
D. A mother who doesn’t feel like cooking on Sunday.
2.The main reason why people are not active is that___________.
A. they are aimless
B. they lack enough money
C. they have too many negative feelings
D. they find no point in learning new things
3.The purpose of the writing is to help readers___________.
A. to recognize one’s weakness
B. to see laziness in a different way
C. to have a clear idea about what a habit is
D. to inspire students to be hard-working
4.What is the best title for the text?
A. Being lazy and cat lazy
B. Laziness and motivation
C. Temporary and permanent.
D. Being positive and negative
