I was interested to read a newspaper article about a new concept in old people’s homes in France. The idea is simple, but revolutionary―combining a residential home for the elderly with a nursery school in the same building. The children and the residents eat lunch together and share activities. In the afternoons, the residents enjoy reading or telling stories to the children, and if a child is feeling sad or tired, there is always a kind lap to sit on and a cuddle. There are trips out and birthday parties too.

The advantages are enormous for everyone concerned. The children are happy because they get a lot more individual attention, and respond well because someone has time for them. They see illness and death and learn to accept them. The residents are happy because they feel useful and needed. They are more active and more interested in life when the children are around and they take more interest in their appearance too.

Nowadays there is less and less contact between the old and the young. There are many reasons for this, including the breakdown of the extended family, working parents with no time to care for ageing relations, families that have moved away, and smaller flats with no room for grandparents. But the result is the same―increasing numbers of children without grandparents and old people who have no contact with children. And more old people who are lonely and feel useless, along with more and more families with young children who desperately need more support. It’s a major problem in many societies.

That’s why intergenerational programmes, designed to bring the old and the young together, are growing in popularity all over the world. There are examples of successful attempts all over the world. Using young people to teach IT skills to older people is one obvious example. Using old people as volunteer assistants in schools is another, perhaps reading with children who need extra attention.

The First Lesson of the New Term, a TV programme about how to protect oneself in times of emergency, is meant to provide school students with the knowledge on self-protection. It will help students in case of natural disasters such as earthquakes, fires, snowstorms or floods. Many examples show that enough knowledge about self-protection along with enough courage and willpower can help many survive.

The most recent example is from the earthquake in Sichuan Province in May of 2008. While thousands of school kids were killed by collapsed school buildings, all students from a middle school survived even without a single one being hurt. That’s because of their timely and orderly evacuations (撤離), which they had been drilled in every term.

It’s good to see this program is the most important activity of a national campaign to make students be aware of personal safety. Chinese Education Ministry has called on all schools nationwide to give lessons on self-protection knowledge in times of emergency every term.

  閱讀下面上則新聞,然后按照要求寫一篇150詞左右的英語短文

The headmaster of a middle school in southern England, David Hayes, has suspended(停課) students at his schoo1 478 times over the past year --one in twenty of all the student suspensions in England.

Although some people believe that his actions go too far, he seems to be getting results. The number of students receiving ‘‘A’’ grades in the nationa1 senior schoo1 exam has increased from 48% in 2004 to 74% this year.

Mr. Hayes says that many schools could achieve similar improvements if they improve their school students’ behavior. He also says the British government is wrong for pressuring schools not to suspend troublesome students and points out the harmful effects such students have on the quality of teaching and student learning. Suspensions often get many naughty students to improve their behavior, he says.

The school was below average in 2003. Mr. Hayes joined the following year and now suspends two of the school’s 1880 students on average each school day. The total of 478 suspensions over the year means that almost one in four students have been punished this way. This year the school’s academic performance was judged as excellent.
