I began working in journalism(新聞工作)when I was eight. It was my mother's idea. She wanted me
to "make something" of myself,  and decided I had better start young if I was to have any chance of
keeping up with the competition.
With my load of magazines I headed toward Belleville Avenue. The crowds were there. There were
two gas stations on the corner of Belleville and Union. For several hours I made myself highly visible,
making sure everyone could see me and the heavy black letters on the bag that said THE SATURDAY
EVENING POST. When it was supper time, I walked back home.
"How many did you sell,  my boy?" My mother asked.
     "None."
     "Where did you go?"
"The corner of Belleville and Union Avenues."
     "What did you do?"
"Stood on the corner waiting for somebody to buy a Saturday Evening Post."
     "You just stood there?"
     "Didn't sell a single one."
     "My God, Russell!"
Uncle Allen put in, "Well,  I've decided to take the Post." I handed him a copy and he paid me a
nickle(五分鎳幣). It was the first nickle I earned.
Afterwards my mother taught me how to be a salesman. I would have to ring doorbells, address
adults with selfconfidence(自信),  and persuade them by saying that no one, no matter how poor,
could afford to be without the Saturday Evening Post in the home.
One day, I told my mother I'd changed my mind. I didn't want to make a success in the magazine
business.
"If you think you can change your mind like this," she replied, "you'll become a goodfornothing." She
insisted that, as soon as school was over, I should start ringing doorbells, selling magazines. Whenever
I said no, she would scold me.
My mother and I had fought this_battle almost as long as I could remember. My mother,  dissatisfied
with my father's plain workman's life,  determined that I would not grow up like him and his people. But
never did she expect that,  forty years later,  such a successful journalist as me would go back to her
husband's people for true life and love.

I work in a major U.S. factory. We make refrigerators. Four thousand five hundred new refrigerators
every day. It is a union workshop and it's gradually shrinking as many blue collar factories seem to be but
that is not what this story is about. This story is about one man who works in this huge factory.
I've seen him around for years but never paid much attention. He always seemed just a little strange.
A little short. A little... scruffy (骯臟的). Always the same old red ball cap. And always a garbage bag
in one hand. He walks around this big old factory on his breaks and his lunch time collecting aluminum
(鋁) cans. Day after day, month after month on hot days and cold days. Over the years I've followed
him as he walked to his old pickup truck on the coldest day with snow blowing and everyone with their
collars turned up and their hands in their pockets. He would be there with a 40 gallon garbage bag full of
aluminum cans. He'd toss it into the back of his truck and jump in and I'd reach my car and jump in and
we'd all race to the exit of this big half empty parking lot.
Today I was working on a broken machine in this factory and the can man came by with his bag
picking up cans. Our manager was standing there because the machine I was working on had been
"down" for a couple of hours and he was getting worried that we might run out of the parts for one of
the assembly lines(裝配線). I was finishing and I stood up just as the manager asked the can man what
he did with all those cans. I'd never thought to ask him that question because I always just assumed he
cashed them at the recycle center. The can man said: "I give them to my neighbor. He's disabled and
can't hold a job." I blurted out: "You mean you've been collecting all those cans for all these years to
give to your neighbor?" "It isn't much," he said, "but I give them to him. He can't hold a job." Right then
and there in that factory I found myself staring at him. He was wearing a T-shirt and an old red ball cap
and he had a garbage bag full of aluminum cans in his hand! I don't even know his name, but I thank him
for the lesson he's taught me.
1. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.
A. the author didn't like the can man before knowing about his story
B. making friends at work was not encouraged
C. the author drove a very old pickup truck
D. aluminum cans couldn't be recycled
2. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. The manager was angry seeing the man picking up cans in the factory.
B. The author thought the can man sold the cans for extra money.
C. The manager was worried because he might be short of cans.
D. People in the factory all looked down upon the can man.
3. What's the possible meaning of the underlined phrase "blurted out" in the last paragraph?
A. said suddenly without thinking much
B. screamed at somebody in anger
C. spoke in a low voice thoughtfully
D. shouted to somebody cheerfully
4. What lesson does the author learn from the story?
A. Never judge a person by his appearance.
B. Don't work in a factory as a blue collar worker.
C. Always treat neighbors as family members.
D. Kindness is from the bottom of one's heart.

I consider myself one of the luckiest people I know.
I lost my biological mother when I was 9 and when she was alive she was not much of a mother to
me.
I met my step-mom for the first time when I moved to America to be reunited with my father. From
the beginning she made sure to let me know that I was safe and welcome.
I remember when I first saw her at the airport. It was different but not uncomfortable. After I was
picked up from the airport we went home and she unpacked my luggage. Then she took me shopping
for new clothes since the ones I had brought with me from Africa were a bit worn.
That night before I went to bed she came to my room, which was the first room I had ever had for
my own, with the first bed I didn't have to share. She told me she was glad to have me and that she
would take good care of me.
Before she walked out of my new room, she asked me for a hug. I had no idea what she was talking
about. I did not know what the word hug meant, not because I didn't speak English, but I had just never
heard the word before, let alone knew what it meant. So, I just looked at her with a questioning
expression on my face.
But she didn't give up. She called my father into the room and asked him to explain to me what she
meant. When my father was explaining I looked at her and wondered why she wanted to hug me. She
then told me it was because she loved me and opened her arms wide. Shyly I opened mine and we
hugged.
That was my very first hug and I was 11 at that time. I'm 23 now and, thankfully, I have received
many hugs since then.
I consider her my birth mother because life began when I came to stay with her. For the first time
there were no kids for me to take care of and I became a child for the first time. There was no work
waiting for me every day other than the occasional chores that she gave me to teach me responsibility.
Today I say thank-you to my mother; thank you for giving me my childhood back after it had been
taken away from me. I am who I am today because of your love!

1. What was the author's life in Africa?

D. she didn't hear what her new mom was talking about

A. didn't need to do any work in her second home
B. met her new mom when she was nine years old
C. felt safe and loved by what her new mom did
D. had a very big family to support in Africa

4. What can be the best title for the passage?

閱讀理解
I have been very lucky to have won the Noble Prize twice.  It is, of course, very exciting to have such
an important recognition of my work, but the real pleasure was in the work itself. Scientific research is like an exploration of a voyage of discovery. You are continually trying out new things that have not beendone before.  Many of them will lead nowhere and you have to try something different, but sometimes an
experiment does work and tells you something new and that is really exciting.  However small the new
finding may be, it is great to think "I am the only person who knows this" and then you will have the fun of
thinking what this finding will lead to and deciding what will be the next experiment. One of the best things about scientific research is that you are always doing something different and it is never boring. There are
good times when things  go well and bad times when they don't. Some people get discouraged at the
difficult times but when I have a failure, my policy has always been not to worry but to start planning the
nextexperiment, which is always fun.
It is very exciting to make a new discovery. Some people will do the strangest things for this
excitement, such as going round the world in a balloon or walking to the North Pole. There are not many
new places to explore but there is a lot of new information to be discovered in science and a journey into
this unknown area can be much more worthwhile and just as exciting.
I'm sometimes asked, "What do you have to do to win a Noble Prize?" My answer is, "I don't know.
I have never tried. " But I know of one way not to win. There are some people whose main reason for
doing science is to win prizes and they are always thinking about how to do it. Such people don't succeed. To do good science you must be interested in it and enjoy doing experiments and thinking out problems.
And, of course, you must be prepared to work hard and not to be too discouraged by failures.

1. In the writer's eyes his greatest pleasure in all his lifetime is        .

A. to win the Nobel Prize for the first time
B. to be awarded the Nobel Prize for the second time
C. in the work itself
D. to have a much more important recogniition of his work

2. Why did the writer think scientific research to be one of the best things?

A. You will be able to win the Nobel Prize through the scientific research.
B. You can make as much money as possible by doing the scientific research.
C. You may continue doing with something different and exciting, and so you can never be
tired of doing the scientific research.
D. You can get much more chances of promotion(晉級(jí)) by making the scientific research.

3. What would the writer do when he had a failure?

A. He would forget this failure and start the next experiment.
B. He used to be womed about it for several days and never forget it.
C. He always gave up his study as the result of the failure.
D. He used to think out the reasons and then continue to do it again.
