Dear Mandy,

I'm not doing well in my lessons at school, especial in maths. My dad says I must try hard because he wants me go to university. He thinks I'm lazy, but it's not true. I work re?ally hard, often study late into the night! I've tried to talk to my mother, but she always said I have to work as hard like my brother does. My brother doesn't study very hard, and he always gets excellent grades. It's not fair!

The only thing I like it is art. My teacher says I'm the best student she's had for year. When I told my dad, all he said was,"You mustn't waste your time in art. You must fo?cus your mind on your lessons!" I'm feeling quite puzzling what to do now. Would you please help me out?

   Thanks a lot!

                                         Yours sincerely,

                                               Lisa

The adolescent girl from Tennessee was standing on the stage of a drama summer camp in New York. But the girl didn't feel joyful. She was not the leggy, attrac?tive Hollywood type. In fact, she described herself as stupid.

This girl was Reese Witherspoon, who had wanted to be a country singer and admired and respected Dolly Parton very much.

That day at the end of the camp her coaches told her to forget about singing. They suggested she think about another career. She took their words to heart. After all,why shouldn't she believe the professionals?

But back at home in Nashville, her mother―a fun?ny, happy, optimistic woman—wouldn't let her feel de?pressed. Her father, a physician, encouraged her to achieve in school. So she worked hard at everything and was accepted into Stanford University.

And at 19, she got a part in a low-budget movie called Freeway, which prepared for her role in the mov?ie Pleasantville. But her big break came with Legally Blonde.

"If you can't sing and you aren't charming, play to your strengths. If you're going to make it in this busi?ness, better focus on what you're good at,"she told the interviewer later.

And then came the offer that took her back to her Nashville—playing the wife of a country star Johnny Cash,a singing role.

All of a sudden the old fears learned on that sum?mer stage were back. She was so nervous on the stage. But she didn't give up on the movie or herself. She spent 6 months taking singing lessons again. She learned to play the autoharp. And the hard work built up her confi?dence.

Last March, Reese Witherspoon walked up on an?other stage, the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, and ac?cepted the Oscar as Best Actress for her heartbreaking, heart-warming singing role as June Carter Cash in Walk the Line.

B [2015 •山東省滕州市高三模擬] Hello. I'm Jan from Mrs Lake's class. My class want to work together to help the public. We think we have found a great way to do this. Last month we did a class project on the highways near our town. We learned about the Adopt-a-High?way Programme. This programme brings people together to pick up litter along the roads. We think it would be a great i-dea for all students in our school to join the programme and a-dopt a highway.

Adopting a highway is not like adopting a pet. When a highway is adopted, only part of the highway is cared for by a group of people. The group agrees to work every week to keep its part of the highway clean. Each group gets its own sign that has the name of the group printed on it. The sign is put up at the side of the road. This sign lets drivers know who is keeping that area of the road clean.

The Adopt-a-Highway Programme is a great way for people to help their environment look nicer. Also, the govern?ment does not have to send out many road workers. This saves money. Finally, people may try harder to keep roads clean if they see people, especially teenagers like us, cleaning them up.

We will need helpers to care for our adopted highway. If you want to feel great and keep our roads clean, please come with your parents to the meeting next week. We will meet in Mrs Lake's room on Wednesday at 6:00 pm. At the meeting, we will talk about which roads are the dirtiest as a result of people's unkind acts. Then we'll try to pick an area to adopt and clean.

I look forward to seeing you at the meeting. Remember to keep our roads clean!

5.What is the Adopt-a-Highway Programme about?

 A.     Giving names to the highways.

B.     Drawing pictures of highways.

C.     Picking up litter along the roads.

D.     Putting up signs near the roads.

6. What should the students do first if they want to join the programme?

 A.     Pick a spot to care for.

B.     Call Mrs Lake next week.

C.     Write a letter to their parents.

D.     Go to a meeting on Wednesday.

7.What is the purpose of this speech?

 A.     To encourage students to join the programme.

B.     To introduce the traffic system.

C.     To show drivers how to drive safely.

D.     To tell a story about adopting a pet.

8. Which of the following can be the best title for the pas?sage?

 A.     Adopt-a-Pet Programme

B.     Adopt-a-Highway Programme

C.     Ways to protect the environment

D.     Volunteers on roads

A carefree summer vacation can be yours with these easy tips.

1.Fly into alternate airports.

Most major destinations are served by more than one airport. Flying into a less popular one can result in cheaper tickets. Another added perk of quieter airports? Shorter check-in and security lines, and less waiting around.

2.Use public transportation for city travel to save

time and money.

When possible, take public transportation from the airport to your hotel. For example, the London Heath?row express train takes just 15 minutes to get from the airport to the city and costs under 20 pounds. "By con?trast ,a taxi costs about 70 pounds and takes 40 mi?nutes," reports Discala.

3.Eat smartly, explore and save.

Look for ways to take your order in pricey restau?rants and you can avoid "Are we about to run out of money?" "Don't order an appetizer. Don't drink a lot of booze. " Discala says.

Also, cover more ground by spreading out your snack places. "Have dessert at a cafe or ice cream stand, instead of at the dinner restaurant," suggests Discala. You'll see more of the city and making decisions about where to go for dinner will be less worrying.

4.Hit the market.

Much like reading the local newspaper, visiting a market gives context to a foreign country.

Even the smallest villages tend to have a weekly open-air market(often on Saturday mornings) , while in larger towns and cities, people expect additional market days, as well as big supermarkets.

Markets also sell amazing, wallet-friendly souve?nirs. Think about sea salt?local spices or sauces, and re?gional oil and vinegar. Eatable gifts are almost always appreciated, saving you the stress of finding the "per?fect" gift for each person on your list.

The other day I was watching SportsCentre when one of those "human interest" stories came on and really caught my attention.

The hero was about a 27-year-old professional Bass Fisherman named Clay Dyer. At first, they played it off as another guy trying to make the cut on the Bassmaster tour until they showed a picture of him. No legs, no arm, or rather, he has only 1/3 of his right arm. That's all that he has.

It was such an amazing story that I was wondering what this guy could do. Growing up, he learned to play-baseball and basketball, but found that fishing was his true calling. And he does it all on his own. He holds the fishing pole under his chin and uses that and his stub (殘端)arm to cast and reel the fish in. He uses his teeth to help him unhook fish. He ties his own hooks on with his mouth, never really asking anyone else to help. Clay Dyer even knows how to swim. Since his body can't produce enough sweat on its own, he has to take a dip in the lake every few hours to keep cool. He dives in just like anyone else, then somehow treads water(採7jO with his stub arm, then, with a little help, pulls himself back up into the boat and goes on fishing.

Clay Dyer has never looked for others' pity, and nor has he allowed his physical disabilities to prevent him from becoming a professional fisherman. His motto for life is "If I can, you can. ,, He refuses to use special equipment, saying, "I want to do it with one hand the way they do it with two."

5.    Why did the author become interested in Clay Dyer?

A.    He assumed Dyer was living happily.

B.    He thought that Dyer could do nothing.

C.    He took great pity on this disabled man.

D.    He wanted to know what Dyer could do.

6.    We learn from the last paragraph that   .

A.    it seems easy for Clay Dyer to go fishing

B.    Dyer aims to behave like a normal person

C.    special equipment is allowed when fishing

D.    physical disabilities destroy his faith in life

7.    Which word best describes Clay Dyer's personality?

A. Diligent.    B. Faithful.

C. Inspiring.   D. Stubborn.

8.    The text is intended to .

A.    persuade readers to watch SportsCentre

B.    share Clay Dyer's life story with readers

C.    call on readers to care for the disabled man

D.    express the author's admiration for Clay Dyer
