Get a Better Night's Sleep
You're trying to get a good night's sleep, but why do you still find yourself staring at the ceiling? It's time to listen to what some unexpected experts have to say.
Get the Basic Equipment Right.
There's really good study on the basic equipment for sleep. Firstly, most people prefer a mattress (床墊)that is not too hard and not too soft. Secondly, if your mattress is eight to ten years old, you should get a new one. Seventy-two percent of people said they slept better on their new mattress than they did on their old one.
Watching TV at night may seem relaxing. However, it beams light into your eyes, which is a “warning” signal for the brain.Besides, the cooler white and blue light from a computer screen encourages brain activity and makes your brain difficult to calm down. Download the software at stereopsis.com /flux. It gradually makes your screen less bright at sunset, turning its colors a warmer red one.
Keep you Cool.
One of the best signals from the body to go to sleep is a decrease in body temperature. I suggest sleeping in a very cool environment, about 19℃. A hot bath will increase your skin temperature, which finally decreases your main body temperature.
Make Sleeping Pets Lie.
Sometimes your dogs might need the noise of machines. Many dogs are sensitive to noises outside, like other dogs barking or neighbors coming home late. A noisy machine will drown out the noises that are keeping your pet up, which keep your pet from waking you. If you keep them awake during the day, they're more likely to sleep at night.
A. Read a book before bed instead.
B. Take a bath a half-hour or so before bedtime.
C. You also learn dogs sleep when they're bored.
D. The dog is very loyal to his master.
E. It proved two theories.
F. You don't need a really beautiful mattress.
G. Switch off the Box.

【題目】根據(jù)短文理解,選擇正確答案。
In the English language there are striking similarities to many of the characteristics present in Spanish, French, and German. So what are the things that make English so difficult for foreign people to learn?
English doesn't necessarily have more regular consonant(輔音) or vowel(元音) sounds than other languages, but how the stress is placed on some of those consonants or vowels makes it such a difficult language for learners. There are hard and soft consonants like “c” taking on a “k” sound or an “s” sound depending upon the situation. There are silent letters in some words and then some consonants that take on an entirely different sound ( like “th” ) when combined. The changes in the pronunciation of words make English much more difficult to learn.
Another thing that makes English difficult to learn has to do with verb tense. Some languages have very limited changes in verb tense, sometimes just present and past, which makes it relatively simple to grasp. English, on the other hand, is a bit more difficult in this area. For example, in different situations it may be proper to use any of the following tenses: present, past, future, past perfect or present perfect. The verb “choose” can be used in the following forms depending on tense: choose, chose or chosen. This can be very difficult for a foreigner to grasp.
Slang(俚語) is more widely used in American English than proper grammar. In the US just knowing the language as it's generally taught isn't enough. In every single region or even close neighborhoods, the same slang terms make an almost entirely different language. In some areas there are repeatedly used terms that wouldn't even be found in the Webster's Dictionary. They are created by locals and only locals understand them. This can make it very difficult for someone not familiar with the language to get used to it, especially if they don't remain in one area for a very long period.
(1)The purpose of this passage is to ________.
A.tell us how to deal with slang terms in English
B.encourage us to speak formal English
C.tell us why English is very difficult to learn
D.give advice on how to learn English well
(2)According to the passage, the letter “c” in English ________.
A.is often silent
B.has at least two sounds
C.never takes on an “s” sound
D.is always stressed
(3)Compared with other languages, ________.
A.English has very limited changes in verb tense
B.English has relatively simple verb tense to grasp
C.English has more forms of verbs according to the tense
D.English has three more verb tenses
(4)It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A.pronunciation is the most difficult thing in English learning
B.all the slang terms should be added to the Webster's Dictionary
C.if you want to learn English well you first should learn some slang terms
D.people may understand the local language after living in a place for years

【題目】When I was six, Dad brought home a dog one day, who was called “Brownie” My brothers and I all loved Brownie and did different things with her. One of us would walk her, another would feed her, then there were baths, playing catch and many other games, Brownie in return, loved each and every one of us. One thing that most touched my heart was that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with them and we always felt better when she was around.
One day, as I was getting her food, she chewed up (咬破) one of Dad’s shoes, which had to be thrown away in the end. I knew Dad would be mad and I had to let her know what she did was wrong. When I looked at her and said, “Bad girl,” she looked down at the ground and then went and hid. I saw a tear in her eyes.
Brownie turned out to be more than just our family pet, she went everywhere with us. People would stop and ask if they could pet her. Of course she’d let anyone pet her. She was just the most lovable dog. There were many times when we’d be out walking and a small child would come over and pull up her hair, she never barked (吠) or tried to get away. Funny thing is she would smile. This frightened people because they thought she was showing her teeth. Far from the truth, she loved everyone.
Now many years have passed since Brownie died of old age. I still miss days when she was with us.

Dear Lucy,
I'm glad to hear that you are interesting in my city. As you read online, great changes have been taken place in our country. It is more convenient to live in the city than before. Private cars were everywhere now. Lots of people shop on Internet, that is especially popular among young people. What's more, people are paying more attention on their health. You can find more people in the park or in their neighborhood, doing exercises. Even young people are paying lots of attention to their diet. All in all, our city looks very differently. 【題目】Exposed soil isn’t part of nature’s master plan. Good examples where soil is naturally found with no plants growing in are beneath freshly removed trees, or where the ground has been burnt by a land fire. In these situations bare soil isn’t bare for long; within days seedlings (芽) begin to appear and cover the ground. In a few months’ time, the scar is hardly noticeable.
Unlike these natural examples, ploughed (耕犁) fields and freshly dug gardens are obvious examples created by man. But, left to nature, even these bare soils soon turn green with a large number of tiny seedlings. In fields, gardens and on grasslands, roadside and sports fields, along streets and on paths and pavements, we are constantly battling to stop weeds from growing. All we are doing is stop the recovering powers of nature.
Whenever soil is exposed, weeds act like a kind of medicine to reduce the potentially harmful rays of the sun, so the sooner plant growth covers the soil over again, the better.
Weeds also help to improve the fertility (肥沃) of the soil. Their roots get the soil together, improving its structure and creating a more stable environment in which soil life can grow fast. Those weeds with a deep root draw up plant nutrients from deeper in the ground, making them available to plants growing near the soil surface. Above ground, the stems (莖) of weeds help trap fallen leaves which break down into the soil, adding to the fertility of the soil.
As the soil becomes more fertile, different kinds of plants start to replace the “pioneering” weeds. Bushes move in to take the place by gradually shading them out, followed in turn by trees, which eventually push up through the bushes, finally shading them out too. Fallen leaves from the bushes and trees carry on the job of building soil fertility that was begun by those very first weeds that grew on the bare soil. Then, when one of these mature trees is removed in a storm, leaving a wound of bare soil in the earth, the whole process starts again.
【1】When will soil be left bare?
A. A land fire has just happened. B. A young tree is planted in.
C. No one ploughs the land. D. No crops are planted in.
【2】Which of the following prevents the bare soil from recovering?
A. Seedlings appearing in gardens.
B. Reducing harmful rays of the sun.
C. Removing weeds from pavements.
D. Replacing plants in sports fields.
【3】What can weeds do for the soil?
A. They create soil life.
B. They help improve the soil.
C. They get nutrients from the sun.
D. They break down fallen leaves.
【4】How can the soil remain fertile after trees move in?
A. By adding more weeds to the soil.
B. By taking out the weeds constantly.
C. By removing the previous bushes.
D. By making use of the fallen leaves.
