Don’t talk to me; I’m busy with my iPhone

Riding a London subway, a person from China will notice one major difference: in London, people do not look at each other. In fact, eye contact is avoided at all times. That’s not rudeness—people are just too busy to bother looking.

Busy doing what, you ask? Well, they’re certainly not using the time for a moment of quiet reflection, nor are they reading a book. New technology has replaced quiet habits. Today the only acceptable form of book on the London underground is an e-book.

Apple must earn a fortune from London commuters(乘車上下班的人). Since the launch of the iPhone in 2007, over 40,000—yes, that’s 40,000—“apps” (programs downloaded for the iPhone) have been designed.

Commuters love them because they are the perfect time-fillers. One “app”, called iShoot, is a game that features tanks. Another one, Tube Exits, tells passengers where to sit on the train to be closest to the exit of their destination. ISteam clouds the iPhone screen when you breathe into the microphone. You can then write in the “ steam” on your phone screen.

For those without an iPhone, another Apple product, the iPod, may be another choice. It’s not just teenagers who “plug in” to their music—iPods are a popular way to pass the time for all ages.

And if games, e-books and music aren’t enough to keep you occupied, then perhaps you would prefer a film. The development of palm DVD technology means many commuters watch their favorite TV show or film on the way to work. With all this entertainments, it’s amazing that people still remember to get off the train.

1.People in London do not make eye contact on the subway because they are busy ________.

A.playing games, reading e-books, listening to music or watching films.

B.going to work

C.reading books

D.thinking private things

2.Those who like war games can download ________ to their iPhones.

A.Tube Exits   B.iShoot C.ISteam         D.iPod

3.The underlined word “occupied” in the last paragraph probably means ________.

4.The article tells us that ________.

A.London commuters are unfriendly to strangers

B.Apple has earned a lo of money from selling 40,000 iPhones

C.with all the new time-fillers, London commuters often forget to get off the train.

D.technology is changing the way London commuters spend their traveling time.

The teacher was leaving the village, and everybody seemed sorry. The miller lent him the small cart and horse to carry his goods to Christminster, the city of his destination. Such a vehicle proved of quite enough size of the teacher’s belongings, for his only article, in addition to the packing-case of books, was a piano that he had bought when he thought of learning instrumental music. But the eagerness having faded, he had never acquired the skill of playing, and the purchased article had been a permanent trouble to him.

The headmaster had gone away for the day, being a man who disliked the sight of changes. He didn’t mean to return till the evening, when the new teacher would have arrived, and everything would be smooth again.

The blacksmith, the carpenter and the teacher were standing in confused attitudes in the sitting room before the instrument. The teacher had remarked that even if he got it into the cart he should not know what to do with it on his arrival at Christminster, since he was only going into a temporary place just at first.

A little boy of eleven, who had been assisting in the packing, joined the group of men, and said, “Aunt has got a fuel-house, and it could be put there, perhaps, till you’ve found a place to settle in, sir.”

“Good idea,” said the blacksmith. The smith and the carpenter started to see about possibility of the suggested shelter, and the boy and the teacher were left standing alone.

“Sorry I am going, Jude?” asked the latter kindly.

Tears rose into the boy’s eyes. He admitted that he was sorry.

“So am I,” said the teacher. He continued, “Well---don’t speak of this everywhere. You know what a university is, and a university degree? It is the necessary hallmark(標(biāo)志) of a man who want to do anything in teaching. My plan, or dream, is to be a university graduate. By going to Christminster, I shall be at headquarters(總部), so to speak, and if my plan is practical at all, I consider that being on the spot will afford me a better chance.”

The smith and his companion returned. Old Miss Fawly’s fuel-house was big enough, and she seemed willing to give the instrument standing-room there. So it was left in the school till the evening, when more hands would be available for removing it; and the teacher gave a final glance round.

1.The teacher purchased the instrument to ___________________.

A.teach his students instrumental music

B.better equip the village school

C.learn to play it himself

D.let students appreciate elegant art of music

2. It seemed that the teacher __________________.

A.was not getting on well with the headmaster

B.had lived a rather simple life in the village

C.was likely to continue to practise playing the piano

D.was tired of teaching

3. Why did the teacher leave for Christminster?

A.Because he was admitted to a university there.

B.Because he was offered a temporary job with better pay there.

C.Because he preferred the life in a big city to that in a village.

D.Because he thought he had better chance to attend university there.

4.Which of the following can be inferred from the text?

A.The teacher was torn between the eagerness to go to the city and his love for the village.

B.The teacher was going into a temporary place in Christminster at first.

C.The teacher moved his piano into the fuel-house with the help of some other people.

D.The teacher had so much belongings that he had to borrow a cart.

5.The motivation of the teacher’s moving lay in his ___________.

A.devotion          B.a(chǎn)dmiration         C.inspiration         D.a(chǎn)mbition

During the summer holidays in this year, I thought I should do something meaningful instead of staying at home. So I got a job at the KFC fast food restaurant and working there as a cleaner. I worked seven hour a day for three weeks.

There was a gardener who looked after his garden with great care.To water his flowers,he used two buckets. One was a shiny and new bucket. The other was a very old and dilapidated one, which had seen many years of service, but was now past its best.

Every morning, the gardener would fill up the two buckets. Then he would carry them along the path, one on each side,to the flowerbeds. The new bucket was very proud of itself. It could carry a full bucket of water without a single drop spilled(溢出).The old bucket felt very ashamed because of its holes:before it reached the flowerbeds, much water had leaked along the path.

Sometimes the new bucket would say,“See how capable I am ! How good it is that the gardener has me to water the flowers every day ! I don’t know why he still bothers with you. What a waste of space you are !”

And all that the old bucket could say was,“I know I’m not very useful, but I can only do my best.I'm happy that the gardener still finds a little bit of use in me,at least. ”

One day,the gardener heard that kind of conversation. After watering the flowers as usual,he said,“You both have done your work very well. Now I am going to carry you back.I want you to look carefully along the path.”

Then the two buckets did so.All along the path, they noticed,on the side where the new bucket was carried, there was just bare(光禿禿的)earth;on the other side where the old bucket was carried, there was a joyous row of wild flowers, leading all the way to the garden.

1.What does the underlined word “dilapidated” probably mean ?

2.What was the old bucket ashamed of ?

    A.His past.    B.His aging.     C.His manner.   D.His leaking.

3.The new bucket made conversations with the old one mainly to _______.

A.laugh at the old one           B.take pity on the old one

C.show off its beautiful looks     D.praise the gardener’s kindness

4.Why was the old bucket still kept by the gardener?

A.Because it was used to keep a balance.

B.Because it stayed in its best condition.

C.Because it was taken as a treasure.

D.Because it had its own function.
